Newspaper coverage and its corresponding bias contribute to the perception of the black community in Los Angeles. First printed in 1881, the Los Angeles Times now boasts its title as the most widely distributed metropolitan newspaper in the United States. During the election and first term of Mayor Tom Bradley in 1973, the newspaper closely followed the historic developments. Authors grappled with the relationship between racism, prejudice, and indifference during this event, attempting to navigate the fine line between public opinion and target audience. Seen as a champion for black rights in Los Angeles, Bradley turned toward a gubernatorial campaign in the early 1980s, only to face a new set of racially-influenced criticisms at the hands …show more content…
This allusion to the Civil War, as well as to the divisions within California, possesses an underlying tone of prejudice, particularly distasteful within the context of race and governmental campaigns. In 1973, Bradley’s black heritage brought diversity to the California government, but in 1981, this same heritage hinders his pursuit of a higher position. Boyarsky portrays race as a cause for division, rather than a cause for unification among diversity. His sensationalism fosters an image based heavily on racial profiling, failing to rely on objective …show more content…
One union leader refers to Bradley as a “guy” while another brushes off the concept of race in favor of “‘I don’t think it’s as big an issue as John F. Kennedy being Catholic’” (A27). These quotes offer an example of the contrast between those who view race as an impairment to Bradley’s ability and maturity and those who ignore the issues of race altogether, demonstrating both prejudice and ignorance are equally harmful. After examining the personal failures contributing to Bradley’s struggle at the gubernatorial level of campaign, this mention of race occurring toward the end of the article cements the denigration of Bradley. Boyarsky refers to race as “one area of discussion for the meetings” and “a key question to strategists trying to make Bradley the first black ever to be elected governor in the nation”, as if race is a problem Bradley needs to change in order to improve his campaign (A27). A contrast to Shuit’s positive partisan language, Boyarsky applies partisan language from sources of public opinion to appeal to the critical view of the target

Title Vii, Fifty Years Later

...act made workplace discrimination illegal. However, fifty years later we are still debating the issue and there is overwhelming evidence that discrimination in the workplace still exists. Alarmingly, workplace discrimination claims based on race filed at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) have reached record highs within the last three years. In 2010 alone, there were 93,727 charges reported to the EEOC . This article will review current law regarding discrimination by employers. It will determine if these laws are effectively preventing or reducing discrimination in the workplace. Finally, this article will explore what changes, if any, should be made to the law. I. Relevant Law Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is intended to make illegal discrimination by an employer based on race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. Title VII applies to employers who have at least fifteen employees. Originally, the minimum was twenty-five employees until the Equal Opportunity Act of 1972 reduced the number to fifteen. The most recent modifier of Title VII is the Civil Rights Act of 1991 which kept the employee minimum at fifteen but allowed for monetary damage awards for victims of discrimination. Discrimination

...Battling Discrimination at Work Discrimination at work is unfair. The reason why is because everybody is a human being and everyone should be treated equal. Companies don’t always get the best workers because they tend to pick what they think will work, when in reality if they took the time to study them they would realize how the person works and or who they really are. First of all everyone should be treated equal because everyone is the same, some people might be short, others tall, some skinny and some fat but that doesn’t matter because deep inside we are all the same. Also people should be treated equally so that everyone has the chance to do something in life. Some employers hire individuals based on their ability to get a job done. Some employers hire people based on their qualifications and their experiences concerning a particular job. However, there are employers out there that hire someone based purely on how the person looks. Whether it be based on their skin color, age, gender, or sexual orientation. Discrimination is everywhere no matter where we look, but it should stop because it is just not fair, everyone should be treated equal. Companies do not always get the best workers, they tend to go for the people who are good looking and people they think will bring more business and costumers. For example a lot of Mexican people come to this country to become successful and do something about their lives, but the system of the united states decides to block them...

Diversity and Prejudice in America

...said these famous words and she could not have been more accurate. Discrimination and hate are not going away anytime soon but educating our youth on history, diversity, and prejudice could very well be the key to coming closer to the end. First I would like to discuss what I have learned from this class about diversity, discrimination, and prejudice. Honestly I had a general idea of what these three words meant but overall I was not entirely clear on their meaning let alone the severity of them in America. Like most people I was aware of the Civil Rights Movement and Act and knew that African American endured quite the challenge of gaining their rights and freedom but reading the text I was able to understand more of what happened and the challenges overcome. Also, from the text I was able to see that African Americans were not the only ones who faced prejudice and discrimination. So many people, me included, tend to not think about what woman, disabled people, and many other races have gone through to earn the same rights as everyone else. This class really opened my eyes and let me see how I was not seeing the “whole picture” and was not educating myself to help others. I am a Caucasian female and did not notice discrimination or hate around me due to the fact that I have not had to go through any. I grew up in a predominately white neighborhood and had both parents working so did not see discrimination. Learning what woman have gone through to be able to work and have same...

It could be said that their economic status is a result of poor college enrollment or graduation among their race. The reduction in financial aid availability has deterred African Americans from applying for higher education, and the stigma that comes with trying to succeed in school as an African American does the same. In the social aspect, there seems to be consistency of broken families among the race. Single parent families account for 91% of the households. (Schaefer, 2012) This is a shocking statistic.
