Society Runs All Moral governments keep people from turning into animal-like creatures. William Golding the author of Lord of the Flies is set on the a island during World WarⅡwithout government or adults, only immature children. At first the boys made it seemed to be all fun and games, then all the sudden tragedy swept the island. In the novel Lord of the Flies William Golding really touched based on that society retains the humanity.
At the beginning of the novel when there was a good democracy like society, there was hardly any violence. The text stated that “ In the middle of the scar he stood on his head and grinned at the reversed fat boy”(Golding 8). This statement that is made towards Ralph is to show his excitement about having no adults on the island. He has all this excitement since every teen wants to have their own rules. William Golding made a remarkable statement by saying “ They knew very well why he hadn’t: because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood”( Golding 31). The boys are not able to kill because their home environment was not allowed to hurt or kill living …show more content…
For example, William mentioned in the novel “ High overhead, Roger stood facing them, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all of his weight to one side(Golding 180). Now seeing that the democracy had vanished, Roger is doing the unspeakable because the society is not restraining him anymore. He is deciding that he wants to hurt and to kill his own kind. The last interesting statement that was made in the book Lord of the Flies is “Ralph launched himself like a cat, stabbed, snarling, with the spear, and the savage doubled up” (Golding 194). Firstly, when humans are being controlled they follow orders and complete the work that has to be done. If all members in a society are ordered to do some work, the result will not only be achieved but achieved in a shorter amount of time. In “Lord of the Flies”, when Ralph addresses the boys he says: “So we’ve got to decide if this is an island. Everybody must stay round here and wait and no go away. Three of us-if we take more we’d all get mixed, and lose each other-three of us will go on an expedition and find out.” (Golding 20) In this quote, Ralph gives out orders to the boys in his tribe and explains why certain things should or should not be done. The boys all have a common goal, which is to find out more about their surroundings. Then, in order to accomplish that goal, the chief organizes them to ensure productivity. William Golding says so much about adults it was an adult world he placed the boys in and the boys react in a way that adults very well can react. Each novel has different high and lows to their story, and locations are effectively used to express this. The boys are separated from the outside, and are isolated from society and rules, leading to no order. ...Ryan Newell Lord of the Flies Essay Period 5 Word Count: 1662 Lord of the Flies is a classic story of good versus evil, or civilization versus savagery, and symbolism plays a major role in the development of the story. A major symbol is the conch shell. Discovered early in the story, it became an important fixture in the boys’ lives on the island. Throughout the story, it symbolized society and authority – and served to maintain a sense of civilization. When the conch shell broke near the end of the story, the last aspects of civilization on the island and within the boys had disappeared. The conch was first discovered among the ‘ferny weeds’ by Ralph and Piggy as they explored the island. Even taking the conch shell out of the weeds required Ralph to use civilized techniques – to achieve civilization, mankind had to be smart enough to develop rudimentary technology.
