“How to be Good” is written by Nick Hornby in 2001, and they store is about an average family.
One day the narrator, whose name is Katie, is in a dilemma. Her husband David has given their son’s computer away to the women’s refuge: without consulting her or their two kids. David thought it was greedy to have two computers in the house when those women and their children didn’t even have one.
This action of David’s has, inevitable, made the children upset, because they now have to share one computer, instead of having their own. Katie ends the argument with the following statement ‘’you can’t blackmail your own children like that’’
In the end all parts calm down, and David manages to see that he has made a mistake and he apologizes. But there is still something that bugs Kate. A part of Katie wants the computer back, because it was a Christmas present to her son and they worked really hard to buy it, but another part of her knows that her husband only did a good deed with good intentions. She is also doing something for the greater good by helping those women and letting them keep Tom’s computer.
This is concluded from the following quotation; “I don’t know what to say (…) What is there for me to be angry about?” (pp. 1, lines 31-33).
Here she asks herself how she can be angry, when David just did a decent thing. This is the first part where you can see she is in a bit of dilemma. Katie is in conflict with herself because she does not know what to do and how much her beliefs really matter, which is conclude from the following quotation; “So what do I believe? Nothing much, apparently. I believe that there shouldn’t be homelessness, (…) that Tom’s Christmas presents are his, and shouldn’t be given away. There you are. That is my manifesto. Vote for me.” (pp. 3, lines 74-78). From this quotation I conclude she asks herself; “How can I do

About a Boy

...Jenny Smith November 28, 2011 Dr. Min Young Lee English 121 sec 28 The Coming of Age of the Male Characters in About a Boy About a boy is a contemporary novel written by the British author Nick Hornby. It incorporates constructs of post-modern writing by bringing into focus the artists, and styles, and prose of the vernacular. The setting of the novel takes place in London in the mid 1990s. About a boy gives a unique perspective of a coming of age story. It follows the coming of age of two boys of two very different ages; Will Freeman 36 years old and Marcus 12. This novel shows the contrast between consumerism and materialism with real interpersonal connections. Will Freeman made the decision to pursue materialism rather than personal friendships, and to live in self-imposed isolation. Will had the ability to buy “cool” clothes, and sunglasses and sneakers, and so was never at a loss for acquaintances. Marcus, on the other hand, felt isolation due to a lack of materialism. Marcus was an outsider in his school in London since he could not have the best “coolest” clothes, shoes, and haircuts and thus was always the target of bullying. However, as the plot progresses, Marcus and Will undergo transformational experiences together to become more connected to the people around them. The transformational experiences of Fiona’s suicide, falling in love, and Marcus’ arrest all culminate in the maturation of Will and Marcus’ and the genesis of interpersonal connections between...

How to Be Good

...Analysis of “How to Be Good” In the excerpt from the novel How to be Good, the author, Nick Hornby introduces a story that illustrates an issue of homelessness in an upper middle class neighborhood. The narrator, Katie Carr, finds herself in a situation where she is dealing with her husband, David, and his friend’s, GoodNews, mission to change their neighborhood by decreasing the number of homeless youth. Their solution to this neighborhood problem is to use spare rooms in the neighborhood’s houses as temporary shelter until youth are more established on their own. They gather all of their neighbors at the party and introduce this problem and their solution to obtain everyone’s opinion. As a result of this gathering, David and GoodNews illustrate their “goodness” to their community by encouraging people to become part of the solution. Even though the other side of their solution is presented to the audiene, five people feel that they have an obligation to change the lives of these homeless children. Katie Carr is facing a dilemma because she truly believes that she is a good person since she has become a doctor to help others. In addition, she considers herself to be a good mother and a wife. However, she opposes the idea of hosting and aiding homeless youth from her neighborhood in her house because she strongly believes that she doesn’t have to share her house with the homeless youth since that would limit her family and herself. Katie supports the fact that everyone has...

...In Other Words This book addresses the need for a systematic approach to the training of translators and provides an explicit syllabus which reflects some of the main intricacies involved in rendering a text from one language into another. It explores the relevance of some of the key areas of modern linguistic theory and illustrates how an understanding of these key areas can guide and inform at least some of the decisions that translators have to make. It draws on insights from current research in such areas as lexical studies, text linguistics and pragmatics to maintain a constant link between language, translation, and the social and cultural environment in which both language and translation operate. In Other Words examines various areas of language, ranging from the meaning of single words and expressions to grammatical categories and cultural contexts. Firmly grounded in modern linguistic theory, the book starts at a simple level and grows in complexity by widening its focus gradually. The author explains with clarity and precision the concepts and theoretical positions explored within each chapter and relates these to authentic examples of translated texts in a variety of languages, although a knowledge of English is all that is required to understand the examples presented. Each chapter ends with a series of practical exercises which provide the translator with an opportunity to test the relevance of the issues discussed. This combination of theoretical discussion and...
