Abstract

Internet censorship is a control or suppression of publishing or accessing of information on the Internet. The Internet has become a “member” of almost every single family on our planet. It’s not just an ordinary member, but a very important one, especially too someone who spends a lot of time using the Internet. The Internet is a very useful tool that is used for everything such as advertisement, communication, shopping, researching and also for educational purpose. On the Internet, there’re some websites that needs to be censored in order to protect our children from viewing inappropriate websites that promote drug usage, violence and pornography. Parents and school officials are the first ones who need to begin the process of censoring out those inappropriate websites. The Internet is an easy way to access all sorts of information. Because the Internet has become so popular in such a short period of time, the opportunity to censor it has passed by almost as quickly as the public discovered its usefulness to our everyday lives. The Internet has some bad source of information that’s not helpful to our kids. Parents and schools officials are the ones who should start the process of censoring those websites that our kids view each and every day of their lives. Because they are ones who know what sorts of information on the Internet that is best for our kids. So that’s why, Internet censorship should be enacted to prevent teenagers from viewing inappropriate websites that promote drug usages, violence and pornography.

The first reason as to why Internet censorship should be enacted is that our teenagers use websites that promote the use of drugs. Using drugs at a young stage in your life is very dangerous to teenagers because it affects their physical health. For example, smoking marijuana can have short term effects to your body. The short term

Mass Media

...evidence is presented of the harm that TV, movies and videos can do, and as the media are becoming more pervasive, more intrusive, and more disturbing in content, many parents are at a loss as to what to do to protect their children. Television seems to be an especially threatening presence because it brings into our homes, automatically, so many things most parents would never choose to expose their children to. No one delivers books or videos to our homes unordered, but our television provides an outrageous array of disturbing content, that is readily available at the touch of a remote almost anytime of the day or night. A lot of what television has to offer involves violence or the threat of harm in some way. Summer vacations are a blessing for children and teenagers as they find much and more time to watch TV, play video games and use internet. It is a worry for the parents as to how check and control their children from getting engaged in experiencing violence through various forms of media. In today's overall environment when already the minds are susceptible to be influenced by messages provoking for action and thrill it is a responsibility on our shoulders on how to protect our younger generation. As there is no legislation to prohibit children and adolescents from watching violent content in any form, it is difficult to control. The second issue is that the games and other videos are easily accessible in the market. Pirated editions are sold at cheaper rates. Children...

Sexual Harassment Public Administration

...Case: Sexual Harassment 1. In all of the cases all of the offenders could easily be fired. However to effectively solve each case in a manner in which could possibly benefit everyone there are different options for each case. In the first situation there should be a review of why she was denied her bonus by multiple people who are not relatively involved personally with both people, perhaps a hierarchical person. There is always the source of mediation, but a review of the female’s job performance should be take in account for and reviewed. The second situation should involve a supervisor who could send out a memo regarding the occurrence of inappropriate happenings without directly pointing a finger should. Attached to the memo could be the sexual harassment policy. If the situation continues then direct confrontation between a superior and the offender should take place. In the third situation the female officer should file a harassment report and talk to a superior since the level of harassment is escalated to such direct physical contact. Perhaps the male officer could report to someone else on the subject matter or be replaced. In all three cases sexual harassment policy reminders could be sent periodically throughout the year. Having all employees sign that they have read and understood the policy would give the companies a significant advantage when addressing the issues. For the perpetrators, sexual harassment seminars could be arranged to try and address the problem...

Discussion Questions

...1 What does the expression “media literacy” mean to you? Do you consider yourself to be media-literate? Why or why not? What benefits, if any, would you expect to gain from being media-literate? On the other hand, if you were media-illiterate, might that be a disadvantage for you? How so? Media literacy to me means to be aware and knowledgeable in different types of media and to be able to communicate within those media. This would include the use and application of all forms of media and anything relating to it. I consider myself pretty media literate, because I know how to communicate and send messages through most media. I am an avid internet user so therefore can use any forms the internet has to offer in order to communicate. This would include social networking , instant messaging and of course e mailing. I’m a big social network user especially Twitter, where like every other social networking site you can communicate with people all over the world. For me the benefits of being media literate are that I am more educated an able to use classes such as this one. My being on the internet so often has allowed me to take online courses to whereas someone who isn’t, would have a much harder time in an online class. I would say a disadvantage of being media-illiterate would be being cut off from people who you would otherwise communicate with on a regular basis. For those who have family in the military, being media literate allows them to keep in touch with their...

The Harmful Effects Computers and the Internet

...The Harmful Effects of Computers and the Internet Robin Diaz Strayer University Abstract Computers along with the Internet have come a long way from their first uses in the military and by large corporations. Today, computers are an important part of modern life. More and more people are purchasing computers for use in the home. Whether they are surfing the web or managing their finances, computers have become a useful tool. Some parents are purchasing computers and using them as electronic babysitters for their children. They might not see the dangers of this behavior. Everyday children are becoming addicted to computers and the internet the same way a person becomes addicted to drugs. Parents have to take extra care of making sure that their children are safe on and from the computer and the Internet. There are so many dangers that face children in the virtual world. It’s up to the parents to keep the kids safe from those dangers. The Harmful Effects of Computers and the Internet Over the past few years, I have noticed just how dependent my whole family is on technology. Currently in my home we have four computers with internet access, two Microsoft X-Box 360s, a Sony Playstation 2 and a Playstation 3. As a wife and mother, I have to be concerned about what my family is being exposed to. I thought that as long as I spot checked what my children were doing, that they would be okay. I had mistakenly believed that my children would understand the rights and...

Violence in Video Games

...| Violent Video Games | | | | Violent Video Games INTRODUCTION: Concerns over the effect of violent video games on today’s youth have been debated since the late 1970’s. School shootings, criminal behavior, bullying, and violence towards woman have all been blamed on violent video games. Electronic media plays an important role in the emotional development, social behavior and intellectual functioning of children and youth.  Many video games are very helpful for children to facilitate medical treatment, increase learning, and promote pro-social behavior.  However, there are also video games that include aggression, violence and sexualized violence that have a negative impact on children. After the 1993 release of Mortal Combat, Congress contemplated regulating the sale of video games. The video game industry responded by voluntarily establishing the ESRB, (Entertainment Software Rating Board) to create a ratings system. The rating system was based on the content of the video game. The controversy over violent video games resurfaced following the Columbine High School shooting in Jefferson County, Colorado on April 20, 1999 (procon.org). According to procon.org, in 2008, 298.2 million video games were sold in the US, totaling $11.7 billion in revenue. Six of the top ten best-selling video games included violence, with four of the games carrying a "mature" rating recommended for persons aged 17 and older. AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR: Video games often reward...

...What about Violence in Movies? Manabu Ozawa from Japan |[pic] | | |PHOTO BY THOMAS PETERS | | |"Action movies with violence take heat from adults who blame | | |them for real life violence because they are closer to reality | | |than other movies." | | "The question whether movie violence should be regulated or not is a difficult and complicated matter." Although many people criticize violent movies, if there is a movie which does not contain sex and violence, who will go to see that movie? Most major movies, such as "Lethal Weapon", "Die Hard", and "Independence Day", were really popular in spite of the fact that the "good guy" killed more people than the "bad guy" did. In my opinion, Hollywood tends to produce few kinds of movies--action, panic, love story, and comedy. Whenever I watch a movie or a video, there is at least one murder in each movie. The biggest number of deaths are in the panic movies, in my opinion. Action movies with violence take heat from adults who blame them for real life violence because they are closer to reality than other movies. For example, in "Natural Born Killers" we can see around 50 deaths, whereas in "Independence Day" thousands of people die. In both movies, tons of people are killed, though the ways to kill are different. The big difference between them is about reality. |[pic] ...

Media Violencea and Its Effects on Children

...Aggression and Violent Behavior 10 (2004) 99 – 128 Does viewing violent media really cause criminal violence? A methodological review Joanne Savage* Department of Justice, Law and Society, American University, 4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20016-8043, USA Received 9 September 2002; received in revised form 26 October 2003; accepted 30 October 2003 Abstract The topic of media violence has been the subject of heated debate in recent decades. There is a vast empirical literature on the effects of television on aggression but no published comprehensive review has ever focused on those studies that use criminal aggression as their outcome. The present paper represents an attempt to fill this void and provide a resource for those who do not wish to delve into four decades of original research in order to assess this line of investigation. Studies are evaluated based on contemporary standards of research in the field of criminology. Although the possibility that television and film violence has an impact on violent criminality remains, it is concluded here that, despite persistent published reviews that state the contrary, the body of published, empirical evidence on this topic does not establish that viewing violent portrayals causes crime. Child Abuse

... Child abuse is the physical, sexual or emotional mistreatment of children. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) define child maltreatment as any act or series of acts of commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child. Most child abuse occurs in a child's home, with a smaller amount occurring in the organizations, schools or communities the child interacts with. There are four major categories of child abuse: neglect, physical abuse, psychological/emotional abuse and child sexual abuse. Different jurisdictions have developed their own definitions of what constitutes child abuse for the purposes of removing a child from his/her family and/or prosecuting a criminal charge. According to the Journal of Child Abuse and Neglect, child abuse is "any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm". Causes Child abuse is a complex phenomenon with multiple causes. Understanding the causes of abuse is crucial to addressing the problem of child abuse. Parents who physically abuse their spouses are more likely than others to physically abuse their children. However, it is impossible to know whether marital strife is a cause of child abuse, or if both the marital strife and the abuse...

Surveillance in Schools

...year in or near the 85,000 U.S. public schools has been estimated at around 3 million” (Volokh & Snell, 1998). Our educational system is evolving all the time, and one factor that is constantly changing is the aggressiveness within our schools. In 1940, a survey of teachers revealed that the biggest behavioral problems they had from students were “talking out of turn, chewing gum, making noise, running in the halls, cutting in line, [violating] the dress code, [and] littering” (Volokh & Snell, 1998). In 1990, the toprated problems were “drug abuse, alcohol abuse, pregnancy, suicide, rape, robbery, [and] assault” (Volokh & Snell, 1998). In 1940, we had little need for surveillance beyond a teacher’s observation and intervention. Today, however, we live in a much more diverse society with troubled youth and adults who have easy access to weapons, drugs, pornography, etc., which have enabled students and staff to bring their violent and/or inappropriate tendencies into the naïve schools. What worked in 1940 (teacher-student confrontation) is not as realistic in http://students.ed.uiuc.edu/jkelsey/surveillance/index.htm (1 of 3) [3/13/2007 4:24:46 PM] Surveillance contemporary schools, where teachers are hesitant to confront misbehaving students due to fear of violent retribution (Volokh & Snell, 1998) and where teachers are sometimes involved in inappropriate activity themselves during school hours.
