The quote by Rachel Carson is very motivating in having to take stringent measures to protect the earth from further degradation. Carson says,” we stand where two roads diverge. But unlike Robert Frost’s poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have been travelling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork in the road less travelled by offers our last and only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of our earth.” This quote shows two parallel scenarios. The first scenario represents a carefree way of using natural resources in our world that has led to the destruction of our earth and the environment. The latter scenario presents a state of affairs where people live inn sustainable ways.
This first section looks at the scenario painted where someone is travelling in a superhighway. In this set up life seems good and people find living being easy and probably cheap. This represents’ the way people have been living over the past millennia. All along people were fighting for survival only. There was less emphasis on the preservation of natural resources. Land was being seriously exploited. An example is that on the use of energy. The human race, since the time of the industrial revolution has been relying on the use of non-renewable sources of energy. Crude oil, which is an exhaustible source of energy, has been used widely. Machinery and equipment used diesel, petrol or methane among other derivatives from crude oil. These resources however will one day come to an end. The other source of energy has been coal. Coal is a non-renewable source of energy. It has been used to power trains and machines for decades now. The danger is that coal resources will one day become dry. The effects of human beings are more than what used to be known. Now the use of such resources

The Creation: An Appeal To Save Life On Earth By E. Wilson

...Can we save the earth? While reading The Creation: An Appeal to Save life on Earth by E.O Wilson a lot of ideas popped up in my head. I have to admit some were crazy ideas but reading this book sparked them all. If the course didn’t require me to read at least two books from professors Isenhour list I probably wouldn’t have read this book. I’m glad I did because this is an issue that I have heard a lot about but never gave it importance. All my ideas which I will explain later on all lead to a question even if we do all that we can, can we save the earth? First, the author is trying to tell us the importance of saving life on earth. He wants religion and science to come together. He makes his point within the first chapter of the book....

...Worksheet: An Inconvenient Truth 1. What is the most vulnerable part of the Earth and why? The most vulnerable part of the earth is the atmosphere. In this movie, Al Gore says that the atmosphere is quite thin. 2. Describe how global warming occurs. The first step to global warming is that the suns heat waves pass through the atmosphere. The next step, which is the problem, is that some heat waves are trapped by the atmosphere. The earth absorbs most of the radiation but only some of the energy is sent back into space. But as time goes by we are polluting our earth which then thickens the atmosphere that makes Global warming happen faster and faster. 3. The Earth’s temperature fluctuates but what is its general trend?________ The earth’s general fluctuation trend is varies. It goes up and down. It seems that both up and down parts are rising slightly. The up part rises a little higher than the down part. Some might only notice a difference by mid 1960’s. 4. The Earth’s carbon dioxide levels fluctuate from summer to winter. What causes this natural fluctuation? The reason earth’s temperature fluctuates is because most of the land on our earth cover the northern hemisphere instead of the southern hemisphere. When the northern hemisphere is facing the sun (during summertime), the leaves are able to breathe in CO2. When the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun (in the fall/winter), the leaves fall and breathe out CO2. 5. What can bubbles...

Save Our

...“LOVE THE NATURE AND SAVE OUR PLANET EARTH’’ Some among us wonder how to love the nature and save the planet? We as a student, sometimes contribute in destroying mother earth, by littering. Even elderly people too sometimes throw rubbish into the rivers and not in proper disposal places. Most of the time we can notice children throw rubbish at roadsides and outside of the shopping complex. For example Ice creams - paper, Can drinks, fruits and other things. By throwing rubbish we are making our living place and country dirty. Also the left- over food from the container and plastic which we throw became stale and deliver harmful gases. It can spread disease and pollute the air thus infecting others. By throwing rubbish into rubbish bin and in-proper disposal place, we can avoid spreading disease. We can keep our planet clean and a healthier place to live. One day I had a chance to contribute something to save our environment. This is what happened. I recalled seeing a poster in the school canteen about a competition for the best ways to save the environment one of the suggestions in the middle of the list was to encourage every class to reuse paper by having a section in the class room for putting papers that could be used again. Another suggestion was to put posters in the school to encourage students to reduce, recycle and reuse. Examining the list more closely, the last suggestion caught my eye. It was to start a newsletter on ways to save the environment. ...

Environment-How Can You Help to Protect It?

...Environment - how can you help to protect it? Environment is an important part of human life and a healthy environment is a must for human existence. Therefore, it is crucial that we take care of our surroundings and help nature maintain ecological balance so that we could hand over to the coming generations the environment as we found it, if not any better. Our planet is changing. There are a lot of things that affect our planet in a bad way but the good news is that everyone can help to reduce them and do their bit for the environment. While exploring six important topics that affect our community : Electricity (Energy), Pollution, Food, Water, Rubbish, Rainforest, I'll present the damage and a list of ways that we can all contribute to help our planet get better. 1. Electricity Energy is everywhere. We use energy to move the mouse for a computer, to jump and shout and walk and run. It takes energy to power a light bulb, and the light that the bulb gives off is also a form of energy. Other forms of energy include heat, chemical energy, gravitational energy and nuclear power. Electricity is a form of energy and this is what powers the TV, the kettle, dishwasher, hairdryer, toaster, remote control, mobile phone, fridge, stereo, electric toothbrush, and more. Our growing need for energy is one of the problems facing the world today, because producing electricity also produces our next topic - pollution. How to help? When you’re using electricity think about where it comes from...

Reaction Paper Home

...Samantha George L. Baysa September 24, 2014 BSABE Movie: Home Reaction Paper Earth was perfect, a miracle perhaps. Everything was linked. Every organism has its own role and a place in this big world, none was futile. The Earth and all the organisms on it were balanced, under a fragile harmony- until humans came. From being nomadic, hunting food for survival, humans settled down. Then, land, water and life combined. We are benefiting from the 400 billion year legacy of the Earth. We get what we need from her- food, shelter, everything. But from needs, wants grew and now, we just can’t get enough. We want everything and by doing all the experiments and all the activities, we are slowly disrupting the balance of life on Earth. We just ruined the atmosphere; we just made the temperature high; now, the sea level is rising, small islands are gone. Pollution is everywhere and we are the guilty suspect. We are triggering the crises of habitat destruction, energy depletion, climate disruption, degradation...of the environment, health, economic disparity, and more. Human population is almost equivalent to the number of car, cars that emit bad smoke that ruins the atmosphere. And if I continue to rant all of the things we have done, this one page will never be enough. But everything will be a great punch to us someday; we are...

Why Do Icebergs Have Viruses?

...IceBergs- These statistics suggest our icebergs have a virus, with a virus then comes a fever and then the icebergs will start to melt, therefore raising the ocean level. With ocean levels at an all time high many places in the world that were under sea level will now be underwater. Those populations will then move to higher ground and those resources will no longer be available to them. With less land and more people in smaller areas we will not be able to produce food and other goods for everyone. People will be stacked on top of one another and pollution levels will sky rocket. Inevitably mother nature will strike us and there will be many casualties. With dirty melty icebergs the world will soon run out of fresh water to drink and many people will die of dehydration. We will have no other options then to either die on earth or colonize space. It would be a fresh start that the human race so desperately needs. Population- We are at a current world population of 7.5 billion people and it is growing rapidly. By 2050 the population of the world will be around 10...

Save Nature for Future

...Save Nature For Future Young adults generally refer to a time that is neither childhood nor adulthood, but somewhere in between. Young adults are in the age of learning about the things around them. The needs awareness about the environment and what’s happening around the world. They need some guidance in order to know what the most important things are and they should be informed about all these things. Although there are a lot of important things about which everybody should be aware of but according to me young adults should know about Global Warming. Global Warming is defined as the increase in the average temperature of Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global Warming, in brief, is the warming of the Earth. Our planet, Earth, is continually being warmed by different sources. Total process of warming of the earth due to different reasons is called the Global Warming. Global warming is the process in which the Earth’s temperature starts increasing and it happens because industry, fossil fuels, agricultural processes caused by human, natural, and other gas emissions, this factors increase greenhouse gases, greenhouse gases are made up of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. The greenhouse gases stay in the atmosphere and prevent the suns warming rays to leave the Earth. So the sun’s warming rays stay inside the Earth increasing its average temperature. Global warming isn’t the end...

Going Green

...The Earth is yours. Save it! The Earth is yours. Save it! Name : Sanelisiwe Gomomo Laetitia Ngalula Aviwe Janeth Viwe Introduction What does it mean to Go Green? Going Green means that you have adopted certain practices and habits that reduce your overall impact on the environment. These practices may include anything from recycling, reducing your energy usage, using public transportation, to buying local products. Going green is quite important to the environment as well as our health. We will be able to breathe a little easier with less pollution in the air. Consider for a moment that a plastic soda bottle takes over 450 years to decompose, and that beer cans take 200 to 500 years to decompose. If these things are not recycled, or if a process isn't found to speed up decomposition, then we're going to wind up living in our own landfills. People all around the world consume billions of bottles and cans each and every single year, without a method to get rid of these items, our great grandchildren will still be seeing those same bottles and cans around, that alone is an important reason to go green. The Going Green Campaign is to ensure the earth will be a better place to live in future. I. INFORMATION ABOUT THE SERVICE The Going Green Campaign has been created to raise the awareness on the environment hazards we are facing today. There are many ways we can save our earth and prevent it from being destroyed. Our earth has lost a massive ideal environment...

The Hubble

...THOUGHT PAPER 2 THE HUBBLE The earth is given to us, to grow, to survive, to breathe and to live; it’s for our own advantage. But we often take this privilege for granted, probably because its given for free, we did not earn it or strive to deserve it. We value it less; however, one of the beauty that The Hubble showed, was that with trillion miles away, galaxies and stars, non-showed existence of life; it was only the Earth, our home that showed the wonderful blessing that God has given us. How can we then give back to the Earth? How can we balance the need of demand and supply? The Hubble documentary portrays the Earth is the only one who has life, it suggests that one must take care of our planet with the purpose of having a home for future generations to come. The Hubble is a space telescope that is located above the surface of the atmosphere specifically in the low earth orbit far above rain clouds and light pollution. Hubble has an unobstructed view of the universe; scientists have used The Hubble to observe the most distant stars and galaxies as well as planets in our solar system. Hubble takes extremely sharp pictures, the most detailed visible-light image ever made of the universe’s most distant objects. It is one of the largest and most versatile, and is well known as both a vital research tool and a benefit to public relations for astronomy. Hubble’s existence marks the most significant advance in astronomy since Galileo’s telescope. It was built by the United...

Going Green

...English 101 Going green is too expensive Now a days all you hear about is global warming and how all this pollution is ruining the earth, and how going green will solve any future problems. Now say you do decide to go green but wait going green means you have to spend more money. Now why the hell would you spend more money to go green? Especially when this is a worldwide situation and the economy not being the greatest. Who in his or her minds would spend more money when everyone is trying to save money? When it comes to the cost of going green, the long-term benefits to gain often outweigh the costs. The challenge for most people is really to remember this and choose to make an investment. While researching about this I came across an article stating someone’s opinion and one phrase caught my eye. “If we only focus on the cost of going green to our pockets today, but ignore the higher cost of not going green to our environment tomorrow, then we are being irresponsible and unkind – not only to humanity and other living things on earth, but also to ourselves. We will be unkind to ourselves, because many of us will still be alive, fortunately or unfortunately, to experience the harms we bring about to the environment -- pollution, global warming and climate change.” Thinking about this phrase made me think, if your willing to put the money down now you’ll save the rest of it in the future. But why do I have to pay so much, wouldn’t going green be cheaper to make the person...
