HOW TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER

What would happen if a fire broke out in your home or business? Would you know what to do or where the fire extinguisher was located? Over the past couple of months, there have been a high number of fires in homes and businesses. Were there any fire extinguishers and did the personnel know how to use them? Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher could save your home, business or more importantly your life.

Every home should have at least one fire extinguisher and all businesses in the Hampton Roads area are required to have them. Knowing where they are located is just as important as knowing how to use them. In homes they should be located in the kitchen under the cabinets or mounted on the wall. In businesses they are located at all exit doors that are at least 75 feet apart. The size and type of extinguishers will vary depending on the type of business and the size of the space covered. The most common type of extinguishers used is an “ABC” extinguisher. It is used on A, B and C classes of fires. Fires are classified by the materials they burn; for example: Class A or alpha fires are any material that will leave an ash. Class B or bravo fires would be fuel, grease or flammable liquid fires. Class C or Charlie fires are electrical or electronic fires. There is also a
Class D or delta fire which consist of special hazards such as; titanium, magnesium or any material that will produce its own oxygen. The way they these extinguishers work is that the agents used in them is designed to remove one or all of the three elements needed for a fire to exist. The three elements needed for a fire are as follow: Heat, Fuel and Oxygen. By removing any one of the three elements will extinguish the fire.

“Following these basic steps of operation, will ensure for a safe and effective use of the fire extinguisher.”
First, remove the extinguisher from its bracket or wall mount and visually inspect it. You are checking the pressure gauge to ensure that it is pressurized. Next, remove the tamper seal and safety pin. Then, point the nozzle or horn at the base of the fire; stand back at least 2 – 4 feet from the fire. Lastly, squeeze the handle and use a side to side sweeping motion to extinguish the fire. Once the fire is out or if it gets out of control, drop the extinguisher and exit the building or home. The fire extinguisher is used as the first line of defense and to allow for a safe exit from the burning structure. Don’t try being a hero, because to me a hero is just a sandwich.
Following these important steps of how to use a fire extinguisher could save your life, home, business or your family lives. The choice is yours, better safe than sorry!!!
