Walter Louis Cohen Sr.
Born on January 22, 1860, Cohen was a free black before the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment into the Constitution. Walter Louis was a Kohen, a Jewish priest, and also a member of many other civic and community organizations. Educated in New Orleans, he went on to become one of the few blacks to hold an appointed office into the 20th century. President McKinley named Cohen a customs inspector in New Orleans and Theodore Roosevelt appointed him register of the federal land office.
As a successful businessman, Cohen founded and presided over the People's Mutual Life Insurance Company in New Orleans, a large company in which the clients were blacks. In 1922 he organized the insurance company into the People’s Industrial Life Insurance Company. Walter remained president of the company until his passing in December of 1930.

The order provided nursing care and a home for orphans, and later established free schools. In 1836 she founded a small order of nuns, the Sisters of the Presentation, unrecognized by the church at that time. The original members consisted of Henriette, seven Créole women, and a young French woman. In 1837, a Father Etienne Rousselon received a formal recognition of the new congregation from the Holy See. In 1842, the congregation changed its name to the Sisters of the Holy Family. In 1989, the order formally opened its cause with the Vatican in the canonization of Henriette DeLille.
