Being a leader is not always easy task, you often have to take on many tasks, some of which may be rewarding and others will cause stress. The leadership style selected by an individual in power; will determine the type of relationship that he or she may have with his group. In other words, a positive leader encourages, is understanding, and fair. This leader will get members to do work. On the other hand, a negative leader will not be concern with the employee’s well being; and will not be encouraging. This leader’s will have a hard time dealing with his employees. It is all apart of being human, not to desire to be around someone you do not like. Being an effective leader requires one to put on many hats. The hats represent the styles of leadership. A leader must be able to select the appropriate style of leadership for a particular type of situation. For anyone to fully understand how leadership skills may affect group communication within an organization, it is necessary to exam the different styles. Leadership according to Webster’s Dictionary, is define “as the capability to lead. Leading involves taking control of people and a particular situation. This situation can come in all different colors and sizes as do people. A leader must be very quick to adapt to a style depending the circumstances.

According to Kurt Lewin, who is known as the father of modern sociology, states that there are three main styles of leadership; Autocratic/ Authoritarian, Participant/Democratic, and Delegative /Laissez-Faire (http://psychology.about.com/b/2007/10/18/kurt-lewin-biography.htm) The first style, the leader has a do it my way because it is correct and I am an expert attitude. It is often the case, that this leader knows his stuff, and wants to do it right without wasting valuable time. This leader is a no-nonsense type of guy or gal. He or she is stubborn, does not need to ask for the group’s input to make a decision, and is fully task-oriented. All he or she cares about is getting the job done. Communication with this leader is one-way. In an environment where no one is allowed to contribute ideas because the leader has the answer for everything, will not encourage any group communication. Members feel like it their opinions have no value. The focus here is not to here what the ideas are or what the individual has to say. The second leadership style encourages group participation, and collaboration in the decision making process and open communication. People are allowed to communicate ideas or opinions and feel of value. Ultimately, this leader will end up making the final decision and group members will leave feeling that their ideas influenced the final decision. The third style of leadership is a leader that delegates to some responsibility to others. This leader understands that he or she can not do it all. This leader will encourage group members to make decision on their own. This in turn produces a much more innovative, creative and entrepreneurial workplace environment. Communication here is open and member has the freedom to express their thoughts and opinions.

Q: How would the different Leadership styles affect the group communication of the chosen organization?

The organization that I selected to answer this question was Google Inc. This well known search engine corporation can create its success to the intense commitment it has to the corporate mission statement “is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. (McCracken. PC World, Aug2005). Google wants to keep on top of the technology by encouraging the employees to be creative and innovative. The culture at Google is very relaxed and informal. Google is a high-energy, fast paced work environment. While the dress code might be “casual” the company attracts and retains some of the brightest minds in the technology industry. There is a work hard, play hard atmosphere. The Google Mountain View, CA headquarters (aka “the Googleplex”) is a campus-like environment. There are workout facilities, a café, well stocked snack rooms, and a dorm like environment. (Company Profile, Google.com)

The founders like to interact with their employees, and expect their engineers to take time from work for independent projects.
Google Labs (www.googlelabs.com), which launched in 2002, showcases Google's "20% time" philosophy whereby engineers are encouraged to use 20% of their work week to develop new, crazy ideas and then open them up to the public very early to gather valuable feedback and criticism. "The projects in Labs are intended to showcase some of our cool and wacky ideas but are not intended to be full-blown Google products" (www.googlelabs.com/faq). The projects are in the very early stages of development, so projects that are not going anywhere can be removed without notice-Google recommends that you play but don't become too attached to any one project because it might not be there when you come back to try it again. 1
This organization would not thrive if it were ruined by an Autocratic/Authoritative. They believe in rewarding innovation and creativity in a positive manner. The organization posted on their website that it acknowledges that “every employee has something important to say, and that every employee is integral to our success. We provide individually-tailored compensation packages that can be comprised of competitive salary, bonus, and equity components, along with the opportunity to earn further financial bonuses and rewards. “(Life at google-Google.com) This Google motivates their employees positively by allowing them to contribute to its success. Google style of leadership is a blend of Participant/Democratic and Delegative /Laissez-Faire. It thrives in this leadership style because it allow for its members to feel valuable. The sense of value creates job satisfaction and also loyal to the organization.
