Godwin, Peter. “Zimbabwe's Bitter Harvest.” National Geographic. August, 2003, Volume 204, Number 2. pp. 100-113.

~Review of Magazine~

“Zimbabwe's Bitter Harvest” is an article discussing how the black population of Africa is retaking the land. President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, is the architect of this land reform. The likely reason for this is that in 2000, Mugabe lost a referendum on a new constitution that would have significantly enlarged his power. He accused the white farmers of the newly found opposition. The ZANU-PF immediately took action, in occupying the white-owned farms. The article begins with the story of the Stauntons, a white Zimbabwean farmer family of three generations. After being chased off their farm, they await a future of uncertainty in Australia. On a Tuesday afternoon in late 2002, a motorcade of SUVs invaded the Kachere Farm (Staunton's property). Grace Mugabe, wife of the president, viewed it as a plentiful valuable farming site and decided to claim it. They were not the only victims; by early 2003 only 200 of 4,500 white-owned farms remained fully functioning. The ill-effects don't stop there, as the economy was also severely hurt. Commercial wheat production went down 52% from the year before, and the commercial cattle herd fell from some 1.3 million head in 1999 to below 200,000 in 2002. After enclosing this information, the article proceeds to offer personal accounts of black Zimbabweans who've settled in the white farmers' land. One such, Chris Lunga, welcomes the land reform and sees it long overdue. He states that his father fought in the same war as the former land owner's father, yet did not receive any land afterward, as he was black. Another who took hold of the opportunity to have free land is Tapfumaneyi Manzira. He says that he has not sympathy for the white farmers, that is collateral damage as experienced in any conflict. Yet, Manzira is also partly upset with the way things run; he feels it is irresponsible of some black farmland holders to neglect the land. The conflict that took place between the black and white Zimbabweans over the farm land is part of the reason for why Zimbabwe is how it is today.
“Avoidability is a principal element of tragedy, and Zimbabwe's farm chaos—although understandable, perhaps, in light of past injustices—was avoidable.” (Godwin, “Zimbabwe's Bitter Harvest”, pp. 106) I appreciate this quote because it explains how the farm chaos of Zimbabwe was unnecessary. It also gave me perspective on the subject. If a tragedy if avoidable, that makes it all the more tragic, rather than if it was something inevitable. This quote is also saying Zimbabwe should've learned from its past injustices, instead of going head-on into another conflict. I think there are many important meanings within this quote, and a lot can be learned from it.
I find that this article is very valuable, and that much can be gained from it. It is providing the reader with the information of a tragedy that could've been avoided. If not for the land reform, the economy of Zimbabwe would have boomed, and the people could be more unified as a whole. The article does not simply provide facts, but goes so far as to include personal accounts from people involved with the land reform. In this way, the article connects more strongly with the reader. The “land reform” extremely affected the path Zimbabwe would take towards the future; because of it, the country is the way it is today.

...Cool In my 39 years I have heard a lot of people talk or express what they think is cool (electronics, technology, music, movies, cars, and ECT.). However I have never once heard anyone talk about the coolest thing in the world which I will share with you further in this essay. Yes I find all these things to be cool but they are material things and meaningless in my opinion when it comes to what’s really cool which is motherhood. I feel that motherhood is cool because it’s so amazing how a woman could love you unconditionally no matter what you’ve done right or wrong. Motherhood is the most special and coolest thing that this world could ever have due to the fact that she will hold you in her bosom and kick your ass all at the same time while giving you all her love and strength. I’ve found that we have lost site on what is really cool because of the material things that we indulge in on a daily bases. Cool is motherhood for her love, support, tears, and fear the ass kicking’s and the understanding of our rights and wrongs in life. Motherhood is cool for the things that she teaches us past, present and the future to come. Cool is when your mother looks at you and you see the tears in her eyes because of the struggles she went through to provide a life for you that was better than her own. Material things are cool. However we need to stop and think hard about the things in our lives that are really cool, motherhood because without her we are nothing. Let’s embrace her for...

...interesting. Its hard to imagine how animals can adapt to this kind of weather it seems like we are still finding it hard to live out there especially with our technological advances. The climate puzzle was a little hard but plan to go back to take a closer look at some of these things. The desert was well put I think they captured exactly what they were going for and that was to make it seem like a real desert. I was really amazed when I noticed that there were bats in this exhibit and to think that there are bats in the desert I guess it was something that I never thought of I was use to the thought of bats being in caves in the forest something like the movie “Ace Ventura”, so it was something that most definitely broadened that part of my knowledge. Also the rainstorms that happen so rarely in the desert but when it does it goes big. For animals to adapt to this kind of weather is incredible with nowhere to go it really is the survival of the fittest with no water in sight with that kind of heat. The deep sea exhibit was quick for me but I had the chance to play with the roving robot and it’s interesting because I have always wanted to control one of these or at least mess with one and just being able to play with the controls was really cool. It’s so cool that we are only advancing watch this type of technology like this and just being one day to explore the Marianas Trench with this would be really cool. The global zone was really cool. Personal Narrative Analysis

...So overall the year went well. I got through it so that’s good i’m not all washed up on the side of a river. I’m more like kind of over to the side of the river right next to the bank not quite there but almost. :). This year was pretty fun and it wasn’t too hard so I think that i’m going to not fail next year and it’ll be really interesting because i’ll be a mentor next year so that will be a fun experience. But at the same time I can’t wait for summer. I love my friends but good lord sometimes they can be really ridiculous. So Al Capone was a fun one. I think it was my best one because not only was it my guided project but it was the one I had the most fun on and I had more interest in more than any of the other ones so that was a big one. I think that the notecards was a bit more organized that my notebook ones where. But that’s okay because what’s done is done. This totally off point but I think that another big part was that my logs for Al Capone was the prettiest. The reason I say this is because. I enjoyed logging for that one. Then there was 7 wonders that one was a bit more challengeing then the guided but that’s how it’s supposed to be I think. That one wasn’t as fun as Al Capone was but I got a good live source...

Dope

...Dope, Dope, or Dope? This will likely be the most dope paper ever written. Unless of course, the author is a complete dope and does not know how to write. Maybe it will be so bad that the reader will want to use dope to recover from the reading. So which one is it? Dope, dope, or dope? Over the years, many words go through transitions in their usage and meaning. The adjective dope serves as an excellent example of one of these such words. Who really even knows what it means anymore having gone through change after change depending on the era, user and situation as well as many other factors. Based off these various reasons, the word dope has taken on many different meanings over the years ranging from gravy, to stupid, to drugs, and the most recent definition being cool or awesome. As the time period shapes the word and redefines it, users should strive to use the most recent definition to prevent miscommunication. In this specific case, Dope should be redefined as a word to be used synonymously with awesome or cool to describe something as being really neat or impressive. Dope originally held the meaning in 1807 of describing a gravy or other viscous liquid coming from the Dutch word doopen, meaning “to dip.” The first ever official recording of the word in any form of dictionary or written ledger however was not until 1851 and carried a whole new meaning. At this time it was utilized as a form of American slang describing a silly or stupid person according to the Oxford...

Personal Narrative: My Trip To Chicago

...chicago it was a eightlane road which is something I had never seen up to that point which was very interesting to see. We got there at night and it was really dark and some parts of the town we drove through looked kinda scary. When we got to our hotel and the part of town we stayed in was pretty nice however I still would not want to go out alone at night. The night we got there since I was a tuba player I helped unload the trailer. We had to carry our tubas down the stairs and I don't like carrying my tuba because I am not the strongest tuba player, all the other tuba players we’re six foot or taller. After we could find our way to our room into for about 10 minutes some guy told us how to get to our room. Our room had a great view of the Chicago River and Trump Tower. I slept very well that night since I was so tired. When we woke up the next day we...

Childs Christmas in Wales

...aspects in the play worked together to form an outstanding performance. I really enjoyed this production because it was very well put together, the acting was great, and because it spread holiday cheer! In this theatre production, A Child’s Christmas in Wales, the story is told through the eyes of a little boy. To my understanding, this play was a glimpse of what it was like to be a little boy growing up in Wales during the holiday season. Although I really enjoyed watching this production, I felt that there was no real plot to the story. This has nothing to do with Ethington Theatre, I just think this play was written without any real troubles or problems to bring cheer and happiness to people. I think this play was written to remind people of childhood memories and to show how much peace and happiness Christmas can bring to not only a little boy, but to everyone. I do have to admit that this play did exactly that and got me excited for this holiday season! The set for this production was built very nice and simple. I loved the simplicity of the set because I think it helped the audience use their imagination more. The way the town was painted in the background looked so cool with the lights and with a little imagination, it actually seemed like people were walking around in the cold. I loved how the lights were mostly cool colors because it represented the winter and the cold. In class we saw how some lights flickered to represent a fire but it was...

...30% of your final grade. In my case though, the worst hurt came from my best friend emailing me on Christmas Eve. This was not even half of what she sent me: “I just really want you to stop thinking about what others think of you! Bianca, you used to not care! What happened to the best friend I had 7 years ago who didn't care about what others think? The girl who didn't even bother to think about petty dramas? The girl who had so much self-control yet is super fun to hang out with? The girl who had so much ideas to offer? The girl who was Bianca. I miss Bianca ok. Look, I'm not asking you to never change because that's hella impossible. I'm just telling you to stick to who you are and to never forget it. I asked help from the chillest person ever and gives the most neutral answer ever and I won't name her. I opened up about how I'm feeling but before I vented we were talking about how opposite you and I are, like I'm so loud and you're angelic and everything else then she said "yeah I think Bianca's cool" and I said "yeah she is" and then she replied "...now medj hindi na" then that's when I vented and then she concluded you conformed to being normal or basic and that's not you, ok. I don't know how to expand on this more but I just felt off with you. Like I meant it when I said I really really miss you and I really do but somehow the distance felt ok as well because I felt off nga. We Real Cool

...Writing about Literature –Com 1102 September 28, 2011 “We Real Cool” “We Real Cool” is a very short poem that can have a different meaning and theme depending on the reader. I did some background information on Gwendolyn Brooks, the author of this poem, and I realized that knowing some of her background information really helps the reader. By knowing this information the reader can understand and appreciate her poem and its message. During a public reading Mrs. Brooks is known for saying, “I wrote [We Real Cool] because I was passing by a pool hall in my community one afternoon during school time, and I saw, therein, a little bunch of boys – I say there in this poem, seven – and they were shooting pool. Instead of asking myself, “Why aren’t they in school?” I asked myself, ‘I wonder how they feel about themselves?’ and just perhaps they might have considered themselves contemptuous of the establishment…” (Shmoop Editorial Team) This quote helps the reader understand the thought process of Brooks and helps define the general message of how the boys were wasting their time. “We Real Cool” has astoundingly only a subtitle and eight lines. The first sentence we read which is the subtitle says, “The Pool Players. /Seven at the Golden Shovel.” (860) Brooks starts the poem by introducing seven pool players at a local pool hall called the “Golden Shovel”. (860) I found the name of the pool hall intriguing because it means much more than a shovel that is gold. Gold can imply...

Reflective Essay: The Lincoln Memorial

...In my opinion, the best site that we saw in D.C. was the Lincoln Memorial. I really loved the location of it and how it sat in front of the Reflection pool. It was also really cool how you could go and sit on all those steps and hangout. Another thing I liked about the memorial was the huge statue of President Lincoln on the inside, It was absolutely incredible how intricate and detailed it was. The overall Kind of vibe of the memorial was very soothing and cool. From my D.C. experience I learned how important the capital of the United states is to the history of America. There are so many very important monuments and historical buildings in the city and if even one of them is ruined the whole country would know about it. Everywhere you...

The Ether Ice Machine

...hand are looking for a channel that gets your attention, and you found it. You have a comfortable posture in the couch, the windows open and fresh air coming through it. The T.V continues with the program until is commercial time. The commercial starts normal, then it shows a cool drink and suddenly you are thirsty. You get up and head to the refrigerator, you open it, and you got a really cold Coca-Cola. This past 200 years we have seen the big effect that ice had in our lives. It everything started as a theory, and idea, of Dr. Cullen, which the one consisted on the cooling effects of liquids evaporating in a vacuum. Then a lot more people started experimenting with this “cooling” theory. Even if he invented, he didn’t created, he just came up with the idea. Here I am going to tell you how this four scientists had revolutionized the refrigerator to how we use it today. But first let me tell you how the people did to storage their foods before the refrigerator. Do you remember the first example? Well you would said, that’s really easy, nothing to worry about. But imagine if you didn’t have the refrigerator. How would you have fresh food? How would you storage it? How would you be able to get a really cold cup of ice cream? Well we would suffer if the refrigerator wouldn’t exist. We are so dependent on the electricity and new technology that if something happened we would be lost. If we go back 250, or at least 300, we would notice that the people handled this situations...
