Kate Fox: I recognise your name, but your face escapes me
The Journal
I didn’t recognise Renee Zellwegger in her most recent photos, but then that’s not unusual for me.
I’m so bad at recognising faces that there have been occasions where someone I’ve just met has left the room and I haven’t realised they ware the same person when they come back in a few minutes later. Between our first date and second date my now-husband shaved his beard off but when he mentioned it I said “What beard?”.
I can generally manage to recognise the school children I work with by their hairstyles. Uniforms can add a level of challenge though and at the moment the difficulty level has been stepped up in a all girl Muslim school where I run a writing group. The girls wear both uniforms and headscarves. I keep saying that I’m bad with faces and have resorted to getting them to always sit in the same places every week. I am now very used to the hurt expression that comes over somebody’s face when you’ve met them before but fail to recognise them.
My rudeness has an actual neurological root though, honest. There’s a condition called “Prosopagnosia” which comes from the Greek word “Proso” meaning face and “Agnosia” meaning to forget, though in my experience, going on about an obscure quirk in which your brain’s facial recognition software is badly wired, doesn’t make them the people you forget feel any better! Faces are such a key marker of our identity that, of course, changing our face changes the way that people relate to us. When the change happens practically overnight, as Zellwegger’s plumped up cheeks, widened eyes and smooth forehead appear to have done, then of course people are going to comment on it.
It is disconcerting. It probably triggers some primeval instinct stemming from the need to know who people are in case they’re enemies and we need to flee, or allies and we need to cement social bonds. However, the comments have tended to either mock her for so obviously having had work done to her 45-year-old face, or to point out that women in the public eye are under such pressure to look young that she’s bowed to the inevitable.
They note that the consequences of her not undergoing cosmetic surgery would have been comments about the unflattering effect of her ageing when she reappeared in public after some time out of publicity’s glare. The reaction to her new face demonstrates that we are in new territory for future social interactions at a time when cosmetic surgery is becoming more common. I defy anybody not to bite back a comment like “But you have a completely new face!” if they happen to encounter a massively Botoxed, facelifted acquaintance. Except me and my fellow Prosopagnosiacs of course. In the new world of new fizzogs we’re going to be more socially sought after than a lottery winner with tickets to a secret Sting gig at Wallsend Working Men’s Club.
Trainee teacher Charlotte Tumilty turned up to a Hartlepool Catholic school this week with visible tattoos on her neck and fingers. She was ejected when she failed to agree to cover them up. They’re banned in school and other teachers keep theirs under wraps. It was suggested that she could return if she used plasters or bandages to hide the ones that were sticking out. She rightly thought this would look ridiculous.
I’d prefer a society in which it’s okay for teachers to have visible tattoos. But I’d probably also prefer future teachers who are savvy enough to realise that having ones that are hard to disguise may limit their future employment prospects. How much more powerful to be able to tell a student that you’re hiding a big inking of Michael Gove being dipped in a vat of school dinner custard on your back and that not all rebellions need to be overt, than not to be able to get through the doors in the first place.

How to Be an Orange

...Chapter 1: Physical Appearance You, being an orange, want to stay fit and healthy. You want people to enjoy eating you. Here are some tips about the way you should look: 1. Work out to ensure maximum juice inside you. 2. Make sure you take care of your peel. Don't let it get brown. 3. Brush and floss daily to ensure you don't go bad while waiting to be eaten. 4. Enjoy being eaten; it is what you were made for. Let out lots of juice. People like it. 5. Don't squeal or make any noise when being eaten. People will get scared and will not eat you. Now that you have some idea of how to stay fit and healthy, let's take a look at how people react to oranges of different physical states. If you exercise lots, you gain lots of juice, and bigger wedges. People love this because the juice is refreshing and they get more of it from the bigger wedges. People will eat all of you instead of just half or part. You also want to be aware of not getting too juicy. If you do, you turn out to have sour juice, and people will call you 'poop', throw you on the table, and then in the trash. No orange wants to have their self-esteem crushed like that. If you take care of your peel, people won't just throw you away without even opening you. When your peel turns brown, they think you have gone bad and are rotten. So for all of you California oranges, no sun tanning! That goes for all of you. You should stay nice and cool in the fridge. Plus, if you stay cool, people will enjoy...

Thich Nhat Hanh: A Psychological Analysis

...The second attitude we should strive to cultivate is patience. When we are impatient with ourselves, we activate compulsive emotions such as anxiety and anger that controls our actions and behaviors. Unsuccessful at achieving awareness of our impatient self can cause the mind to unmindfully speak and the body to intuitively act, resulting in actions we could possibly later regret. According to Altman, having a sense of guilt does not activate awareness rather it further stimulates negative emotions, fueling more compulsive behavior. Moreover, Thich Nhat Hanh emphasizes how worries and anxiety only make us see the unimportance of what’s in front of us. Therefore, patience is an essential quality for ourselves when the mind is agitated. According...

Agent Orange

...from chemical weapons to nuclear weapons has increasingly created stress on ecosystems and the environment such as Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. Agent Orange is one of the potent herbicides used as a defoliant by the U.S. military in its herbicidal warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand, during the Vietnam War. The name Agent Orange comes from the containers that it was stored in, which had an orange stripe. The U.S. military deployed almost 20 million gallons of herbicides from 1962 to 1971. Among these substances, Agent Orange was the most widely used herbicide, around 11 million gallons. The Vietnamese had the geographical advantages so they used Agent Orange, a mixture of toxins, to remove leaves from trees and bushes, leaving the enemies more exposed. However, the persistent nature of dioxins, erosion caused by loss of tree cover and loss of seedling forest stock meant that reforestation was difficult or nearly impossible in many areas. It has also been linked to many health problems in Vietnam veterans and Vietnamese civilians which caused thousands to die from conditions likely brought on by exposure to Agent Orange. Thus, Agent Orange has disrupted ecological equilibrium. When dioxin is not contained, it seeps into the ground and the groundwater sources, polluting the local ecology and becoming part of the food chain. When people eat animals and plants contaminated with dioxin, it begins accumulating in their fat tissue, since the poison is fat-soluble...

...cuisine, is one of the most popular places that serving orange chicken. The company was founded in 1983 by Andrew Cherng, Peggy Cherng and Ming Tsai Cherng. It is also the largest chain of Asian fast food restaurants in the United States. As of year 2011, the company has approximately 1500 restaurants covering 42 states and Puerto Rico. To a sector that was used to be dominated by American fast food, burgers and fried chicken, the invention of Panda Express found a good market niche. The success of the company relies heavily on its unique concept, quick-service Chinese restaurant, and its locations, shopping mall food courts, supermarkets, key intersections, college campus, airports and casinos (Panda Management Company, Inc. History). Dishes featured in Panda Express are originated from different regions of China. Usually, adjustments have to be made in order to allow the dishes to be more acceptable by Americans. For example, cuisines from Hunan and Sichuan are usually “spicy and oily, often featuring a sophisticated blend of intense flavors” (Coe 99), so Chinese chefs in America have to make such dishes to be milder. The popularity of orange chicken is not just a coincident. The preparation of orange chicken is not very complicated. The meat will be battered, deep fried and then stir fried in a sweet orange flavored chili sauce. For many Americans, meat is a big part of their lives. The crispiness and sour taste cause orange chicken...

...have no particular taste. Also, how does their ripening process and humans affect the dispersal of their seeds, and how fructose is used for metabolism in fruits. There are many types of fruits some considered tropical for the environments they grow into and others temperate for growing in cooler environments. Fruits have different tastes depending on their chemistry and according to the level of fructose or starch they possess. Fruits that are high in fructose like watermelon, grapes, mangoes, and apples tend to be on the sweeter side while starchy fruits like pineapples, oranges, lemon, and some raw fruits are more acidic and go towards the sour side. There are some others that just have no particular taste; this is due to them having similar levels of both fructose and starch giving them a more neutral taste than others. A particular fruit like oranges may also be sweet; the same goes with some apples which are more on the tart side. In regards to their evolution process, almost all fruits have seeds and their dispersal is essential for the production of more fruits, this dispersal may be affected by their ripening process. When fruits ripen it goes through a series of changes that alter their appearance and taste, their starches convert into sugars and they end up being sweeter and softer. Ripening of fruits can however cause premature levels of seed dispersal. Several ways for seeds to be dispersed are by birds and mammals when they eat the fruits and dispose of it naturally...

...Assignment 1: Sensory Perceptions PHI 210 Professor Carter Lauren Vinson Oct. 17, 2012 Human senses come in variety of ways from hearing, seeing, touching, feeling, and tasting. Our senses can also help with thinking and memory as well. When our senses help with our memory and thinking, it can make information accurate, and not false. Likewise, human senses do have its drawbacks. Being sick and tired can clutter human senses. We cannot smell certain things, due to the fact that our noises may be stuffed up because of a cold. Also, when humans are sick, hearing things can be a negative factor as well. Humans may not be able to hear good enough because their body is in a different state of mind, which is by being sick. It can slow down the body, and sometimes human’s body do not cooperate well when being sick. Meanwhile, the accuracy of sensory information is true due to the fact that, when it comes to touching, when someone touches something very cold their senses sends a message through their body to the brain, telling that they should remove their hand or finger. Another factor would be our sense of smell. For example, if someone is cooking in the house and forgot to set a timer for the food being cooked, they can tell when the food is being overcooked; because they will smell or sense a burnt smell throughout the house, letting them know that the food has been overcooked. When it comes to our senses as far as smelling, it can alert us on what may be going on...
