LSI Paper
Dr. Matasha Murrell 11/9/2014 Introduction According to Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan, “Good leaders learn their specific personal strengths and weaknesses, especially dealing with other people, then build on the strengths and correct the weaknesses.” The Life Styles Inventory (LSI) profile has been in use for over a decade by managers, trainers, supervisors, and consultants world-wide. Developed by Dr. J. Clayton Lafferty, the Life Styles Inventory (LSI) measures 12 specific styles of patterns of thinking that can either help or hinder a person from reaching his or her potential. The LSI acts as a personalized developmental needs assessment calling attention to individual strengths as well as areas needing improvement. It was designed to promote constructive change – transformational change-with the feedback helping individuals more clearly understand what is currently supporting and hindering their personal effectiveness and growth, with guidance to developing more constructive styles of thinking and behaving. With researched linked to personal satisfaction, stress, effectiveness and quality of interpersonal relationships, the LSI can truly help people change their lives. The results of my individual LSI profile are as follows:

How to Write a Case Study

...Case studies can be used in any academic discipline. The purpose of a case study is to provide a more thorough analysis of a situation or "case" which might reveal interesting information about that classification of things. For the business student, a case study could be done on a particular company; for the political science student a case study might concern a particular country or government/administration. Case studies could be written about individuals, such as how kids learn to read, for example, about organizations and their management practices, or the results of applying a computer science program or process to a problem. You might be trying to figure out how to solve the problem of illiteracy or environmental degradation. The sky is the limit. The key is to take your large problem and bring it down to the level of the individual or single unit.  A case study is an analytical piece. It involves heavy research and application of theories, concepts, and knowledge commonly discussed in the field of study. It highlights common problems in the field and will illuminate those problems through the in-depth study of its application to one individual, one company, one government, or one of whatever you are studying. Most case studies are an attempt to solve one of these problems that are known in the field.  Steps to Writing the Case Study  1) Determine what your case study will be about. Think about the problems you have discussed in class or you have come across in...

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

...their brewery business with financial hardship at times. ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ reflects and resists the dominant ideology of consumerism; “For Tomorrow, he knew, all the Who girls and boys/Would wake bright and early. They’d rush for their toys!” (10th rhyming couplet/19th line). The poem plays the idea of materialism and directly connects it with Christmas. The main character, the Grinch, is of the lower economic class and resists bourgeoisie. He does not celebrate Christmas, and purely hates the positive spirit that comes with it. The Grinch thought to himself that he will stop Christmas from coming if he steals all the items that were bought in preparation for Christmas. The poem is directed towards an audience of young children whose families celebrate Christmas. If a child whose family did not celebrate Christmas due to religion or finances, the child would not understand the poem and the feeling the author is trying to convey. The title of the poem also twiddles the idea of materialism because the Grinch who stole Christmas actually didn’t steal Christmas; he stole all the presents and food that was meant for Christmas day. No one can actually steal Christmas as if it is an object. Christmas is a holiday that is meant to be celebrated by Christians and throughout time people and companies have marketed Christmas as a consumer’s holiday. DeBlois, who co-directed the first film, agreed to return to direct the second film on the condition that he would be allowed to turn it into a trilogy. He cited The Empire Strikes Back and My Neighbor Totoro as his main inspirations, with the expanded scope of the The Empire Strikes Back being particularly influential. The entire voice cast from the first film returned, and Cate Blanchett and Djimon Hounsou signed on to voice Valka and Drago, respectively. DeBlois and his creative team visited Norway and Svalbard to give them ideas for the setting. Composer John Powell returned to score the film. How to Win Friends

...At the youthful age of twenty-one, I thought I knew of many secrets and strategies of how to win friends and influence people. Meeting strangers is in my comfort zone. I love talking to people; I enjoy learning how others process thoughts which form conversations. It has been said to me many times that I could have a conversation with a brick wall. Anyone that has ever literally tried having a conversation with a brick wall could come to this realization - having a real meaningful and effective conversation requires two logical people both interested in the other. After reading and studying Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, I discovered my tactics for interacting with others weren’t parallel to the ways you can actually triumph in the social world. The quote by Dale Carnegie painted a clear picture for how I should go about interacting with others – “There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it.” The techniques used to obtain what we desire from people stem from our interpersonal skills and situational awareness. How to Win Friends and Influence People provides methods and instructions on how to handle people, how to make people like you, how to win people to your way of thinking, and how to be a leader. Within every objective Dale Carnegie presented I discovered an effective approach that would benefit both...

How to Win Friends

...millionaire mindset club essential book summaries HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE by Dale Carnegie INTRODUCTION When Dale Carnegie first sat down to write How to Win Friends and Influence People he really didn’t realize exactly what a best seller it would be, nor did he realize that over 70 years later it would still be in print - and be acclaimed as ‘the best all time’ self-help book in the world. The book was first published in 1937 and was developed from the real life experiences of hundreds of people, rather than from just one person’s opinions. The idea for the book was brought about by the results of an investigation conducted by the Carnegie Foundation that was carried out to determine how people became financially successful. The investigation found that success took only fifteen percent of actual technical knowledge, and that the actual key to success rested on the other eighty five percent. This eighty five percent was identified as possessing skills in human engineering: the ability to get on with others well, your individual outlook and people skills. These results came as a shock to many at the time as these skills were not widely taught in courses or classes. A new concept had been discovered and a large hole emerged that needed to be filled by a new peopled-skilled class. This is how the Dale Carnegie Course In Effective Speaking and Human Relations was born – and the book a mere set of ideas on memo cards which were discussed and lectured on. These...

Math 220 Week 2 Writing in Mathmatics

...Writing in Mathematics 40. What does it mean if two quantities vary directly? What it means is that when two variables are related in this kind of way the ratio of their values always remain the same which the two variables are said to be in direct variation. 41. In your own words, explain how to solve a variation problem. When attempting to solve the best way to go about it would be to follow the 4 step process. The first step would be to write down the selected equation. All direct variation problems are solved by using the equation y=kx. The second step would be to use the information given in the problem to find the value of K which is called the constant of variation or the constant of proportionality. The next step in this process would be to rewrite the equation from step one substituting in the value of k found in step two. The final step would be to make use of the equation found in step three and the remaining information given in the problem to answer the question asked also when solving word problems it helps to include units in your final answer as well. 42. What does it mean if two quantities vary inversely? With two quantities with inverse variation as one quantity increases the other quantity decreases. 43. Explain what is meant by combined variation. Being in the service for all of these years will place a small amount of fear regarding entering the civilian workforce because of the leadership style you are taught in the military. However, with the tools I have gained from this class; I feel that my transition from military life to the civilian sector will be easier than I thought. We as military personnel have learned how to wear a uniform properly and how to greet personnel with respect but we have not been taught how to properly prepare for retirement. When asked to write a resume in this course, I felt this assignment would be a challenge because the first thing I thought about was “the future”. Asking myself what exactly does my own future have in store for me and how do I prepare. Immediately, I took this assignment serious; gathering my thoughts to put into my resume because what if there was no tomorrow for me in the U.S. Navy; what if I had to get out today “what would I do”. I really enjoyed this assignment along with the cover letter because it challenged me to “think, what if” and “how do I prepare”, so this really hit home for me. “The Tips for Writing Resumes” was a great source to refer to for this assignment. Various tips were presented with great detail. The instructor’s comments were helpful when moving on to each assignment because it demonstrated the student was on the right path. Jacob Riis How The Other Half Lives Summary

...The 1890 book How the Other Half Lives by Jacob A. Riis, sought out to expose the horrific conditions that over one million immigrant workers and their families faced in the tenements of New York's East Side slum district. A citizen's movement prompted by the guilty consciouses of the middle class resulted in the creation of the Board Of Health, that passed the 1867 "Tenement House Act". The act mandated the cutting of 46,000 windows into interior rooms solely for ventilation purposes. These renovations were met with opposition from tenement owners as well as by tenants. In many accounts tenants had to be physically dragged out from cellar apartments by police officials. In spite of the Tenement House Act, many renovated buildings had no apparent improvements . New tenements that were constructed after the act still had floor plans that left rooms dark and dank and, over crowding was still permitted. The air inside the tenements were described as " ...fouler than...

The Nature and Characteristics of Educational Research

...The nature of educational research is analogous with the nature of research itself, which is systematic, reliable and valid to find the “truth”, investigates knowledge, and solves problems (William Wiersma, 1991). Moreover, educational research process involves steps to collect the information in order to investigate problems and knowledge. However, the educational research is more complex because it can use various approaches and strategies to solve problems in educational setting. It also can involve many disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, behaviour, and history. In addition, educational research is important because of contributing knowledge development, practical improvement, and policy information (John W.Creswell, 2005). Therefore, educators can use those research findings to improve their competences and teaching and learning process. Furthermore, the characteristics of educational research are a part of its nature. According to Gary Anderson (1998), there are ten characteristics of educational research. I tried to classify those into three categories, which are the purpose of research, the procedures of research, and the role of researcher. The purposes of research are to solve the problems, investigate knowledge, and establish the principles in educational phenomena. In short, it focuses on solving the problems and developing knowledge. Furthermore, procedure is an important characteristic of educational research, which involves colleting data with accurate...

A Feminists Critic of How the Grinch Stole Christmas

...Feminist Critique: How The Grinch Stole Christmas How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a popular children's book by Dr. Seuss. This book is about a man - The Grinch - who hates Christmas and hatches a plan to 'stop it from coming' and then 'saves Christmas' after essentially being the reason the holiday needs to be saved in the first place. Like many of Dr. Seuss' books, there is an underlying theme or political statement, in this case the superiority of man. The man himself is a well known racist and bigot, due to his series of political cartoons which depicted racist images (Cross-Section of The World's Most Prosperous Department Store made for Judge Magazine, and his book The Sneetches for example), and antisemitism (The Sneetches is once again an example). To start things off in this particular case, there are barely any female characters. Every character - aside from Cindy-Lou Who - from the Grinch to his dog, Max, are male. To add insult to injury the only girl in the book, Cindy-Lou, is described with words like small and tiny and sounds like 'the coo of a dove'. Now this wouldn't be that big of an issue (considering Cindy-Lou is only two years old), if it wasn't for the fact that Cindy-Lou being the only girl in the story implies that all girls are suppposed to be small, tiny, sound like a dove and, essentially, are inferior when compared to men (Cindy-Lou compared to The Grinch). Dr. Seuss also uses Cindy-Lou to show that women are weak minded and easily manipulated while...
