Howard Phillips Lovecraft was a creative writer, who wrote stories during the 1920’s and 1930’s. Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890 at his home in Providence, Rhode Island. Scott Lovecraft, his father, was a traveling salesman, and when Lovecraft was three his father suffered from a nervous breakdown in a hotel room in Chicago (Joshi, para. 1). Mr. Lovecraft later died, and H.P. was raised by his mother and two aunts. When H.P. was little he suffered from psychological illness, illnesses that could’ve caused him to write the stories that he did (para. 3). He also could’ve been inspired to write about horror from his grandfather, who used to read him scary stories every night.

The interbreeding of people considered to be of different racial types is what this term means. There are numerous examples, like the fish people in the shadow over innsmouth. Fish people were not of a certain race they were just people who bred with fish. It tells how Lovecraft wasn’t racist because he makes up these people that were imaginary and could never happen, but it is something that would scare the people of today. Just like if people back in his time would breed with people of a different race, and how that would’ve scary to see in that time. A quote directly from the book tells how Lovecraft describes the Fish people, “Their forms vaguely suggested the anthropoid, while their heads were the heads of fish, with prodigious bulging eyes that never closed. At the sides of their necks were palpitating gills, and their long paws were webbed. They hopped irregularly, sometimes on two legs and sometimes on four” (Lovecraft p. 328). It proves that Lovecraft can say things that will seem to be racist, but in reality he is only writing about what he fears.
