Are people bonded together after a terrifying experience they have gone through together? Howie and Laura were marooned, stripped naked and left stranded on Goat Island by their camp mates. Not wanting to return to the camp they left the island and went on a journey to return to their parents. This journey was mostly about growing a friendship between Howie and Laura. People can remain close friends after a frightening experience they have gone through, one example of this is Howie and Laura. There are 2 point of views to this subject, some people believe they can remain close friends others believe there friendship was temporary and only based on the situation they were in. When Howie had woken up when Laura and him just swam of the island ¨He was shaking with cold, and he wondered if they were going to die.¨(pg 20) What the author is saying here is Howie was very cold and he was even wondering if they were going to die. Howie and Laura were left naked and stranded on the island and they had to swim to the beach shore. This event must have left, Howie and Laura traumatized. Since, Howie and Laura went through this disturbing experience, together they are now bonded together and this shocking occurrence has built up great trust between Howie and Laura. When Howie and Laura had just resolved their fight Howie said ,¨I had this idea that just you and me could live together in the woods, it might sound weird¨ and then Laura said ¨It does sound weird… it's nice to think about though.¨ (pg 183) The authors point is that Howie and Laura have developed a great trust between each other. Howie even thought of an idea that they could live together in the woods just the two of them and Laura agreed. This shows that they trust each other enough to be away from civilization and they trust each other with their lives because living in the woods is risky because one of them could get sick, they can run out of money, food and other necessary materials to remain healthy. So, this shows that Howie and Laura trust each other with their lives and this trust is going to help Howie and Laura maintain a strong friendship for many years. Of course, it is possible to disagree with the view that Howie and Laura have developed a trust between each other that will help them maintain a strong relationship and instead argue that Howie and Laura were confused because of the events they had encountered and they had no real trust. However the weight of the evidence is on the other side. What must be remembered is that Howie and Laura were talking about
