There are a few intangible benefits I believe all companies should provide to their employees. Free parking, wellness programs, and a relaxed dress code are three examples that I feel would benefit both employees and employers. Working downtown can be a hassle, especially if one has to pay for parking; most of the time the employees have to fend for themselves. I believe if the company provides parking for the employees, it will effectively reduce tardiness, save the employees money, and make the position more appealing. Parking is expensive, and although the bus is always an option, some people prefer to drive, and are turned off by positions at downtown businesses simply because they don’t want to spend a lot of money parking their cars. Since employees wouldn’t have to drive around looking for an available meter, tardiness would be cut drastically, which would promote productivity. Wellness programs are offered at a number of companies, mine included. From a business standpoint, it encourages employees to be healthier, thus they will live longer and work longer. As an employee, I appreciate it because it makes me feel the company cares about my well-being. We have health screenings every year to determine blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, and cholesterol. Also the company provides nutritional coaching, to those who are interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Because I feel the company values my health and well-being, it boosts my morale, and makes me more satisfied at work. Since I am taking advantage of the program offered, I believe this will cause me to live a longer healthier life, and I will continue to work at my company for as long as I am able. A relaxed dress code is something that is important to me. I know there is a common known statement about dressing for the job you want, while maintaining the job you have. I both agree and disagree with this statement. While I understand that impression is important, especially in customer service, I also believe there is something to be said about a company that values its employees comfort. My current position has a relaxed dress code of business casual, and there is no policy on tattoos or piercings. I believe that because it is a relaxed atmosphere, everyone feels safer being themselves around management, and we are all honored for our individuality. The comfort in this boosts morale, and promotes a good attitude in the workplace. If employers offered something other than money as compensation to their employees, there are a few suitable options. Food, clothing, housing, and transportation are a few things that could be offered instead of cash compensation. After all, we use money to purchase the necessities of life, so if no money was being paid, we would work to sustain ourselves with the basics. I imagine it to be like a community co-op.
