Creative You grasped the rectangular glass bottle in your clammy palm, and raised it to your dry mouth, swallowing the last remnants of your guilty pleasure. You would have to cleanse your mouth later, using toothpaste and mouthwash in an attempt to conceal the intoxicating odour that infused your breath. You stared over the russet, rusted metal railing, absorbing the blackened chaos of the storm-tossed Atlantic Ocean. A sensation of rebellion and pleasure, both startling and exciting, surged through your lungs. You exhaled deeply, your warm breath tainted with alcohol, which tangoed and twisted, transfusing the salty Atlantic air. You firmly stoppered the empty bottle with a rubber cork, and safely sequested it in your cobalt, cotton pocket: it was to be dealt with later. Despite the negative stigma associated with drinking, it nevertheless attracted a subversive following, particularly among the rebellious youth. It was a group, to which you had of course, once belonged, but you grew old, and your membership expired, albeit leaving you with a legacy of addiction that you were unable to vanquish Of course, you were glamorizing the reality. You were simply a middle-aged adult who couldn’t kick a habit. However, as a Commander of an elite naval vessel, if caught excessively drinking, you would be expected to resign. Unfortunately, the repercussions wouldn’t just end there. Your partner and two sons were oblivious to your secret habit, your chronic alcohol addiction. You could easily imagine the shame and embarrassment etched into their faces. You were a sole income earner, so of course, your family would struggle financially. Perhaps a divorce, initiated by your partner? You would have to find extra work, a difficult task, given the current state of the economy. Would you end up selling the family home, unable to find employment? You were perhaps exaggerating the consequences, but once in a rant, you found it difficult to halt. Alcohol allowed your mind to unwind, it gave you reprieve from your day, your extensive duties, the accumulation of pressure. It allowed you to temporarily forget the fact that you had an addiction. You strode back to the naval bridge at twilight, your mind in an unnecessary, ferocious spin. The rebellious pleasure that had once soothed your mind was displaced by irritation. You marched across the flag deck, enduring the splattering sea mist that rubbed your uniform damp, icily pressing against your skin. Your fingers trailed along the cold railing, as you gazed upon the outline of the bridge and communications antenna silhouetted against the velvet sky. The beauty uplifted you for a second, as if god had taken you back to his workshop, and shown you something special. Manmade and natural elements intermingled and were for once, compatible. Such moments gave a refreshing sense of meaning to your life. This was why you had joined the Royal Australian Navy. Not for the lack of sleep, the pressure or expectations, but for that sense of sporadic sense of freedom You paused momentarily, allowing yourself reprieve: to collect yourself. You had to walk onto the naval bridge as a commander, not a drug-addicted, paranoid middle-aged adult. Your life was characterized by complications; you were one individual with multiple personas. You grasped the reddened naval railing with both hands, which were trembling slightly from the cold. The salty air hiking its way through your nostrils, the spew of saline water form the ocean, the wisps of hair that batted at your ear lobes, it was a refreshing distraction from all that berated your life. Suddenly, the moment cracked. You felt the cold, empty bottle, pressing against your abdomen, slip from your lower pocket, your hands reached out to catch it. You fumbled the empty bottle with both hands, attempting to secure it in the prison of your clumsy fingers. But it escaped, falling onto the deck, splintering. You paused momentarily; panic seeping through your mind, what if someone saw? And then came that rush of chaos: you quickly bent down, sweeping the fragmented glass into one hand. Standing up, you dropped the shattered glass over the railing, a sea of glass shards pelted against the ocean, piercing the murky depths. You breathed out and glanced at your hand, trickling with scarlet, and with several minor gashes. You hadn’t realized the jaggedness of the glass shards: the panic had concealed the pain. For a moment, you felt slightly nauseous, a surge of dizziness, a lack of balance, blood: seeping, oozing, and that awful metallic odour. But you dismissed the thought; you were a naval commander, not a haemophobic. Being an alcoholic was already too difficult. The bridge offered security, a safety blanket from the Atlantic squall. You were greeted by the wafts of coffee, warmth, and the respect that was always extended to a commander. It offered peace to your harrowed mind. You were no longer an alcoholic; desperation for redemption, but a valued, experienced leader of a naval war ship. Perception was everything. Your mouth had been cleaned of any trances of alcohol, your left hand cleaned and self-bandaged, your blonde pulled back into a tight bun. Your demeanor exuded n air of leadership. Nobody knew – not a single officer, or sailor on the ship. Nor your children, or your husband of 17 years. It was a secret between yourself…and..god?. You were an infallible liar.

Senior Reflective Essay

...junior year, I haven't written any narrative pieces, in any classes. The focus throughout my high school curriculum has been toward argumentative, analysis, and informative writings. Only in my junior year did I write my first creative writings in the form of a short story and a poem. The first creative writing I had to write a "Vomit" Draft. A vomit draft was the very first draft of a paper with little to no guidelines. "Bring two minutes to life" was the only instruction. We had to throw down 500 words without paying any real attention to punctuation or grammar. This kind of freedom associated with such creative writing was an alien concept to me. Getting used to writing without a structure that we had to follow, without a set of guidelines we had to abide by took a while. But, this kind of writing really helped me learn and improve, not just my writings, my organization and my time management skills as well. Knowing that I had to write such a demanding paper (it turned out to be fourteen pages longs), I had to improve my time management skills, which, up till junior year, hadn’t really been a challenge. Forcing myself then, to distribute time wisely has really helped me now, with the terrific pressures and burdens of college applications. This creative writing segment in my junior year helped my prepare, in a way, for these college essays. It gave me the free thinking approach I needed to hammer down my narrative essays this year. I only wish that there was more of such assignments...

Reflection

...Final Reflection “Has there ever been a time when we have not been awash in a remarkable torrent of symbols and opportunities for reading and writing them?” (William Kist, in the NCTE statement on multimodal literacies) There is an art of reading, an art of thinking, and an art of writing. To read is to fly: it is to soar beyond what it seen on the pages. We write to taste life, in the moment we live and in retrospect of the past. Reading helps develop thought, instead of having to think for yourself. Once you learn to read, you will be forever free. When reading this quote I believe that there is always something interesting being offered in which we can both read and write about. Everyday, there has to be a moment which is better than all the other moments, a moment that makes you smile or laugh, something memorable, something you can look back at and smile because that’s how memorable it was. These are moments in which we can write about to share, because someone out there must be able to connect with this moment and share that smile you had when you experienced it. As well as someone being willing to read it. There are tons of opportunities available for people. Moving on from first semester to second semester I can definitely see how my skills as a writer and a reader has improved. As I read text I can now understand deeper meanings and connect things to other sources or personal connections I’ve made. My work habits and ideas have grown to the point...

Personal Statement - English Literature and Creative Writing

...Personal Statement I am drawn to study English Literature and Creative writing because I am passionate about and committed to reading and writing. I feel that a structured programme of study is imperative for me to achieve my long-term goal of establishing a successful and varied career as a writer. I know that the path I have chosen will often be difficult to walk but I have already taken a step toward its end by starting an Access course. Throughout my short time on the Access course I have gained confidence in my speaking skills. For example, during a recent discussion on gender and relationships in a graded English discussion I raised a point that the teacher had not thought of and was praised for doing so - this taught me that by pushing myself beyond my comfort zone by sharing my ideas and opinions I will be able to achieve my goals. I know that with the skills taught on the Access course I will be able to achieve my goal of studying and completing a degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. The Access course has taught me the importance of self-reflection and criticism through keeping a reflective log which documents my progress, obstacles and goals. I have learnt that I am able to be objective when analysing my own work and performance; this skill has helped me to realise that in order to improve my work I have to be critical of myself and be able to accept criticism from others, I feel that this skill will prepare me for the competitive world of writing...

...Analysis of the Impacts of Tate Modern’s Economic Prosperity ABSTRACT Tate Modern is a leading museum in UK. Since its inception in the year 2000, the museum has faced a major regeneration phase. In addition to that, the museum has attracted millions of people within its confines. It has also grown massively affecting the community around it. This analysis aims at looking at what has been the impact of Tate’s prosperity .At this point, it’s worth noting that due to lack of capital resources, most museums undergo little or no progress. However, this is not the case with Tate Modern which has largely grown in size and rebranded its entire community The Stage recently reported (Merrifield, 2012) that local councils in the UK have reduced funding for arts organizations by 40% over the last year. Under ‘related posts’ on the website, there are links to a July article warning of a 90% cut in local authority expenditure on the arts by the year 2020 (Smith, 2012); one reporting a 40% cut since 2008 (Smith, 2011); one reporting the withdrawal of funding by London councils (Woolman, 2011); and one reporting a rather flaccid warning against such cuts, issued by the Arts Council of England in 2010 (Woolman, 2010). Clearly the present economic climate is not favourable for arts and cultural activities in the UK, or elsewhere in the developed world, where the effects of the 2008 global banking crisis continue to be deeply felt. The stories published by The Stage suggest that, at a local...

Case

...Case #4: THE BATTLE FOR VALUE, 2004: FEDEX CORP. VS. UNITED PARCEL SERVICE, INC. Synopsis and Objectives • Set in June 2004 • To assess the financial performance of FedEx Corp. and United Parcel Service, Inc (UPS). The two firms have competed intensely for dominance of the overnight express package industry. • This case is intended for use in an introductory discussion of corporate value creation and its sources. It requires no numerical computations; rather, the tasks are to interpret the results and to reflect upon their implications. The contrasting record of the two firms affords a platform to: • Assess economic profit analysis (also known as Economic Value Added) and, more generally, the measurement of financial performance and health. The case provides a complete historical economic profit analysis for both firms, and permits comparison with other classic approaches to historical performance analysis. This comparison affords the opportunity to discuss the attributes of healthy and successful companies, and to explore the strengths and weaknesses of economic profit. Key learning points about economic profit include its dependence on the conventions of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and its ignorance of strategic option value. • Evaluate the financial implications of rigorous competition and corporate transformation. Questions 1. What are the enabling and inhibiting factors facing the two firms as they...
