1. Introduction:

A Health and Safety risk assessment is a planned process in which all hazards in the workplace are identified and their risk prospective evaluated. The risk possible is a mixture of the likelihood “when could an accident happen” with the severity “what could result” if an accident did happen. Once the risk potential has been identified, it will allow you to decide whether you have taken adequate (reasonable practicable) precaution or whether you need to do more to prevent harm. (Boyle, Tony (2008) Health and Safety: Risk Management,)
Risk assessment is an integral part of any Health and Safety management system. Conducting risk assessment provided an organization with a safe and effective working environment. Risk Assessment should be conducted on a continual basis to manage the risk associated with the hazards in the work place. The main objective of a risk assessment is to determine what the hazards in the work place are; how can these hazards affect the organization (people, assets, reputation and environment) and what controls must be put in place. There are five essential stage processes in conducting a risk assessment; Identify all the hazards; Evaluation of the risks; Measures to control the risks; Recording the findings and Review the assessment.
The intent of this paper is to demonstrate what are the crucial factors associated with undertaking a risk assessment.

2. Analyses/ Discussion:

Risk Assessment

...Practical Risk Assessment The following example is an activity that could be carried out at work – but which most people will do at home – changing a lightbulb. I have chosen this as it is an example of an activity that most people can relate to, wether we live in a house or a bungalow. The fluorescent light is on the ground floor of an office block. It is four o’clock on a December afternoon and must be changed. Assume there are no controls in place other than those listed below. The ladder has to be placed in one of the fire escape routes for the room. Hazards Use this box to list all the hazards identified in the activity. The tick box list includes some of the more common hazards that may be encountered when doing your risk assessment. It also provides space to allow you to add your own. In this example we have identified a number of hazards that could be present in this activity. The main ones are concerned with electricity cuts burns working at height working in the dark. These should be written in the hazards section of the form, you will see that we have identified some of the problems associated with those hazards. Event Risk Assessment

...EVM 203: Assessment 1 Throughout this document, I will look to explain Fowey’s Royal Regatta and the techniques and strategies they have deployed to prevent risks occurring. Fowey Royal Regatta is a week-long carnival which attracts thousands of tourists and annually celebrates sailing in Cornwall. I am specifically going to investigate the closing day of the regatta; which is host to the firework display and carnival float parade. This is a public event with a large number of attendees; therefore it must provide a safe environment for anyone located at the event. The event organisers prior to the event will carry out risk assessments to identify and risks or hazards during the event. I will go into detail the risks associated with the people involved in the assembly of the event prior to commencement, as well as the risks associated with issues such as motorised floats during the carnival procession, including risks to members of the general public. Goldblatt and Nelson (2001) describe a risk assessment as a profile of a particular event, that considers all potential risks and threats that could arise. Please see Appendix 1; which outlines the risks identified at Fowey Royal Regatta. The first risk outlined in the risk assessment involves the floats from the carnival parade. The floats have the potential to collide with entrants and buildings (especially with the narrow road access in and around Fowey town). They also have a potential issue with falling objects hitting members...

Unit 27

...health and safety in a business workplace in order to conduct an audit and carry out a risk assessment. Unit introduction It is important, when working in business, to ensure compliance with organisational procedures and legal requirements, as the consequences of non-compliance can have serious implications for employees and employers. It is important, therefore, for learners to appreciate that those working in business must understand the principal issues which affect the working environment, for all individuals and the organisations that employ them. This involves keeping up to date with information on the legal issues that affect safe working practices. Everyone at work plays an important part in ensuring health and safety and it is essential that key personnel are aware of their roles and responsibilities. Employers must take reasonable care to protect their employees, and others, from the risk of injury, disease or death, while employees must take care to protect themselves and others. Safe working conditions and the ‘welfare of employees’ can contribute to the success of an organisation. It is important that organisations take steps to prevent accidents in the workplace and monitor procedures regularly. Learners will investigate the procedures that organisations have in place for maintaining safe working conditions and the various ways organisations can conduct risk assessments Learning outcomes On completion of this unit a learner should: 1 Understand...

Business at It's Best

...Management Fall 2009 Non-financial risk assessment in mergers, acquisitions and investments Identifying sources of business risk in the ICT industry Bachelors thesis Erik Allenstr¨m, 1984-11-26 o Fredrik Njurell, 1984-01-30 ¨ Tutor: Osten Ohlsson January 14, 2010 Abstract The number of company mergers and acquisition activities has increased dramatically the last two decades. The reasons for conducting these activities are many and the uncertainties of their results are high. To reduce the uncertainties when making an investment, merger or acquisition it is vital to do a thorough assessment of the risks involved with the activity. This thesis focuses on a specific part of this risk assessment, namely the non-financial risks. Mergers and acquisitions are done in almost all industries around the world and the reasons for and benefits of these activities can vary between industries. We have chosen to investigate the risk assessment of non-financial risks in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry. The thesis aims at investigating what business characteristics, for companies in the ICT industry, that give rise to non-financial risks that must be assessed when doing investments, mergers or acquisitions. Further on we present a risk pattern that points out what business characteristics that are the most important when conducting a risk assessment of non-financial risks on companies in the ICT industry. From a literature study we find evidence that ten different...

However, the above satistics make it clear that owning a home is not without risk. To form a complete picture, you, the prospective buyer, need to consider the potential risks and disadvantages of home ownership as well. Understanding these disadvantages beforehand will give you a better chance of minimizing their impact and avoiding the fate suffered by these homeowners. RISKS IDENTIFICATION There are many risks in buying a new house such as: • The opportunity cost of investing in an alternative investment is very high because the entire cash and future income stream is tied up into one asset a home, which may or may not appreciate. • The house is an undiversified investment, so if the market tanks as it has, game over. • Knowing that we do not own our home, the bank does. • A lot of cost connected to home ownership, such as repairs and insurance and fees and potential hazards I have not considered. • If I lose my job, game over, this will put a lot of stress on me. • There is a chance that your new home will lose value. Risk Management Overview

...Risk Management Overview February 21, 2011 FIN/415 Risk Management Overview Paper Risk management is a systematic process of managing the exposure of the organization to a variety of risks. This process has become increasingly important for the success of any organization in current competitive markets. The successful identification of threats and opportunities is crucial in risk management as it allows to create the processes and procedures allowing the company to maximize opportunities and minimize threats. Many organizations treat risk management seriously and create separate department responsible solely for risk management. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line incorporated risk management department into its structure. This step allowed this organization to improve the risk assessment procedures and introduce the necessary processes to minimize the impact of threats. The organizational risk relates to the organizational governance, operations, and information systems. The organizational risk management “provides assurance for reliable and accurate financial and operational information and reporting, effectiveness and efficiency of operations, and safeguarding of assets, as well as compliance with regulations, contracts, and the organization’s code of ethics” (Aghili, 2010, p. 23). Organizational risk management treats the relates to the organization as one entity and...

Risk Assessment

...large emphasis on financial risk assessments. The risk assessment process is needed to identify risks that need to be treated within an organization, as well as to provide strategies and methods that are most appropriate to treat these risks. Because many organizations are poorly aligned between their risk exposure and their risk appetite, it is important to engage in the risk assessment procedures. These procedures can help an organization prevent risk exposure and determine if their current operations will result in an increase or decrease of market value and owners’ wealth. As a result of the economic crisis, and the recent increase in corporate failures, organizations can now learn from the mistakes of others. This paper will discuss the mistakes that lead WorldCom, a telecom company that was once the fourth-ranked in Fortune 500, to bankruptcy in 2002, in an effort to demonstrate the importance of successful risk assessment and alignment implementation. Keywords: corporate failure, risk analysis, risk assessment, risk management, WorldCom Over the past years, and as a result of high profile firm failures, the economic crisis, and increased regulatory pressure, many organizations have placed a large emphasis on financial risk assessments. Risk assessment is the process where risk managers analyze the risks of an organization and identify risks that need to be treated (Tarantino & Cernauskas, 2011, p.47). In addition, a risk assessment provides strategies and...
