Case Study 2-Internal Control
Financial Accounting 504
June 14, 2015

Internal control is very important to any company. It protects a company’s assets, can stop fraud and embezzlement. According to the authors of our book, “Internal control is a plan of organization and a system of procedures implemented by company management and the board of directors designed to accomplish the following: safeguard assets, encourage employees to follow company policy, promote operational efficiency, ensure accurate reliable accounting records, and comply with legal requirements” (Harrison, Horngreen, Thomas 2013). One of the main internal control problems that Williams Oil Services Company is doing, is allowing the receiving clerk to handle too much of the company’s inventory without proper supervision. In this case (situation a), there needs to be a separation of duties. The receiving clerk should not be in charge of the entire inventory. If she is going to order the inventory someone else should be in charge of counting the inventory received at the dock and another person should be in charge of inputting the receipts into the inventory ledger. There should also be someone in charge of reviewing the parts ordered from the receiving clerk. Having too much control in one area can cause fraud and other problems.

Nicole Lopez at Scott Sales Service (situation b) is clearly violating an internal control when she is not requiring the sales team to provide original sales receipts for airline, hotel and car rental. When an employee is working on reimbursement and expense reports an itemize sales receipt is needed to make sure that the person requesting the reimbursement did not over spend what is required of them and only purchase things that are approved by the company. Without an itemize sales receipt, Lopez is taking the sales team word that

Week 5 Case Study: Investment Potential in the Healthcare

...Week 5 Case Study HSM 544 Healthcare Industry The American health care industry is one of the nation's largest and most profitable industries (Healthcare, 2011). The American healthcare industry "has consistently increased its share of GDP from only 7.2% in 1970 to more than 16.0% in 2008" and that figure is still growing (Van Horn, 2010). It is also one of the few American industries that is expected to grow in the next few decades. In fact, the healthcare industry in America is expected to generate 3.2 million new jobs through the year 2018, which is more than any other American industry (Healthcare, 2011). This industry includes everything "from small-town private practices of physicians who employ only one medical assistant to busy inner-city hospitals that provide thousands of diverse jobs" (Healthcare, 2011). It includes things such as doctors' offices, phlebotomy laboratories, research laboratories, outpatient care centers, nursing homes, residential care facilities, clinics of all sizes, and large hospitals (Healthcare, 2011). It is not only a large industry, but a very broad one with many potential investment opportunities and many potential risks. Government and Healthcare The role of government in the healthcare industry is a topic that leads to very active and divisive debate. People are either of greater government involvement or deeply opposed to any government involvement. Currently, healthcare remains an industry with a high degree of regulation, in terms...

Quiet: Power of Introverts

...of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gentle is powerful … Solitude is socially productive … These important counterintuitive ideas are among the many reasons to take Quiet to a quiet corner and absorb its brilliant, thought-provoking message.” —ROSABETH MOSS KANTER, professor at Harvard Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant, profound, full of feeling and brimming with insights.” —SHERI FINK, M.D., author...
