Personal Leadership Plan
Throughout life one will encounter many experiences and there is a lesson in each experience. I have embraced the experiences, learned from them and will use them to show others that there is life after drug abuse and incarceration.
I currently volunteer with an organization that provides a safe and sober living environment for women in recovery. My goal is to assist women transitioning back into society after incarceration. The United States has become the world leader in incarcerating its people with over 2.3 billion being locked up and then being released back into society without skills needed to become a productive member of society.
While ethics are of great importance in any human service field, the need for an ethical leader is crucial in this area. There will be a number of challenges working with this population. The worker will have a commitment to providing the resources that will assist the women rebuild their lives but there is a moral obligation to the community as well.
I am a firm believer that we all have to be held responsible for our actions and there are consequences to the choices one makes, however there has to become a time when it can be said that one has paid for his or her choices and be allowed to move forward. It is my belief that all people must be treated with respect and dignity. The stigma placed on those who have a conviction does not allow that and places many barriers in an ex-cons path of living a productive life.
Working with those who have been incarcerated can present many challenges as they often group together and resist letting outsiders in. Often times this comes from past experiences of abuse and rejection. As a leader in this field I will gain their trust by following through on what I have said and open, honest communication. It will be my responsibility to set the tone for the whole organization. I will lead by example. It is important to find staff that will be role models in every aspect.
Being able to motivate and show these women that there can be life after incarceration will present its own challenges as they will face many obstacles daily that tells them otherwise. As a leader I will need to think outside the box in guiding these women around obstacles. While there is no simple formula that will work for everyone, I will use my listening skills to learn about each individual. It is important to understand or know each woman so I will be able to know what direction we need to go that will benefit the most. I will make sure that resources will be available that will meet the different needs.
As a leader I will practice both transactional and transformational styles of leadership and be able to switch styles of leadership as needed. Rules will have to be set for everyone to abide by and being able to stand firm with those rules allows for the home to run smoothly and each person knows what is expected of them. Transformational leadership is important as the women have to play an active role in rebuilding their lives as well as learning how to make good choices for themselves. Each woman will have input on their case plan, volunteer responsibilities, and living conditions. It is important to realize that these women have been an environment where all decisions were made for them and they are not all going to agree. Being able to recognize issues before they become a problem is critical. I believe that when a person works hard for something it will mean more to them than if somebody did it for them or gave it to them. Boundaries will need to be set so that myself or staff is not putting more into what is needed than the individual is to rebuild their life. The more it means to them, the more they will want to keep it and are willing to work hard for other things.
It is just as important to work with those within the community. Collaboration skills are going to be needed as the only way for this program to be successful is to gain acceptance from within the community. Strong ethical leadership will be needed as there will be members of the community watching very closely. As a leader it will be my responsibility to present our vision to the community in a way that they will also see the benefits in helping these women.
My passion and commitment to this field will give me the drive to go that extra mile in order to make things happen. While my vision will help reduce the recidivism rate among women in my community I firmly believe that we will accomplish something even greater than that. It will form a type of sisterhood as each woman who is able to take the steps in rebuilding their lives will step up and use what they have learned to help another. As these women move on past living in the program they will be living productive lives and be contributing member of society. Every success will make another’s journey a little easier. Each success helps break down the walls between the ex-con and the community.

Hsm 230 Personal Leadership Plan

...HSM 230 Personal Leadership Plan The area of human services in which I would most like to work is with the homeless. Besides having my own personal experiences with homelessness, I think that it is an ongoing issue in the United States that needs community and governmental assistance. With the economy being in a state of recession, the rate of homelessness is continuing to increase with no sign of slowing down. People are losing their incomes leading them to losing their homes. While some are able to downsize to a smaller place that is more affordable for themselves and their families, there are others that are unable to secure a place to live and have resorted to either living with relatives, in motels or even worse, shelters. As a leader in the field that I have chosen, the moral responsibility that I would need to encompass is helping those that need to be helped to the best of my ability. I would need to help and serve the homeless because it is something that I am truly passionate about, not because there is something in it for me other than the knowing that I assisted in servicing those in my community. I would need to protect my clients right to privacy and refrain from crossing the lines of maintaining a relationship other than professional; even though I do believe that organizations benefit from transformational leadership. I would also need to treat those in need with the upmost dignity and respect. One thing that we must realize is that as a leader of...

Personal Leadership

...HSM Personal Leadership Plan Hsm/230 01/15/2011 The type of organization or agency, I will be pursuing in my career choice, will either be in Mental Health as a Substance Abuse counselor, a Rehabilitation Center, and/or ultimately getting my MFT to do Marriage, Family Therapy specializing in substance abuse. In the mean time, I will pursue working in the Administration field of Human Services. So, in all areas that I have chosen for my future, the ethical issues and leadership are directed towards the same area, and are all of similar concerns. Although, let’s focus on Administration, since that affects the human service agency as a “whole”. I personally feel that it is possible that the straight forwardness of transactional leadership may be very effective. However, I would lead with, transformational leadership as my motivator. I feel that leadership that focuses on engaging people through relationships, is more efficient and effective. Working together as a team to reach the goals that are set forth, makes everyone feel more important, which makes people ‘want to’ work harder and want to achieve the highest goals that need to be accomplished. “Gardner (1990) in his examination of leadership today argues that there is a moral dimension of leadership that is related to the responsibility to constituents. He said, “We believe, with Immanuel Kant, that individuals should be treated as ends in themselves, not as a means to the leader’s end, not as objects to be...

Perosnal Leadership Program

...* Personal Leadership Plan * By Raven Cleveland * HSM/230   “Being ethical increases the reputation of the organization. Ethical leadership enables the employees to engage in good practices, which overall result in welfare of everyone in the society”. Ethics and ethical leadership is important in any organization or any field in that matter. It is important to practice these types of things because you want your organization to succeed you should do things the right way and make sure you, and your employees follow the guidelines and rules and live by them. As a leader when you follow rules, and do things that follow the rules and guidelines of your company your fellow employees will want to do the same. It is very important to lead by example. The word leader means a person who led or leads the group or organization. Which means the person who is in charge. Employees look up to this person, so it is very important to treat them right. When you treat your employees and clients right they do right by you. As a leader in social work I would make sure I improve human welfare. There are a lot of families, and individuals that do not get the benefits they are entitled to and I would make sure they get those benefits. I would also make sure Individuals such as clients are spoken to in a respectful, and professional manner. As a leader I want to do a whole lot, but I will also make sure my employees get the benefits they deserve, and get the evaluations and one on one...

Quiet: Power of Introverts

...MORE ADVANCE NOISE FOR QUIET “An intriguing and potentially lifealtering examination of the human psyche that is sure to benefit both introverts and extroverts alike.” —Kirkus Reviews (starred review) “Gentle is powerful … Solitude is socially productive … These important counterintuitive ideas are among the many reasons to take Quiet to a quiet corner and absorb its brilliant, thought-provoking message.” —ROSABETH MOSS KANTER, professor at Harvard Business School, author of Confidence and SuperCorp “An informative, well-researched book on the power of quietness and the 3/929 virtues of having a rich inner life. It dispels the myth that you have to be extroverted to be happy and successful.” —JUDITH ORLOFF, M.D., author of Emotional Freedom “In this engaging and beautifully written book, Susan Cain makes a powerful case for the wisdom of introspection. She also warns us ably about the downside to our culture’s noisiness, including all that it risks drowning out. Above the din, Susan’s own voice remains a compelling presence—thoughtful, generous, calm, and eloquent. Quiet deserves a very large readership.” —CHRISTOPHER LANE, author of Shyness: How Normal Behavior Became a Sickness 4/929 “Susan Cain’s quest to understand introversion, a beautifully wrought journey from the lab bench to the motivational speaker’s hall, offers convincing evidence for valuing substance over style, steak over sizzle, and qualities that are, in America, often derided. This book is brilliant...

...OVERVIEW UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE FISCAL YEAR 2014 BUDGET REQUEST APRIL 2013 OFFICE OF THE UNDER SECRETARY OF DEFENSE (COMPTROLLER) / CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER Preface The Overview Book has been published as part of the President’s Annual Defense Budget for the past few years. This continues for FY 2014, but with modifications as proposed by congressional staff. From FY 1969 to FY 2005 OSD published the “Annual Defense Report” (ADR) to meet 10 USC Section 113 requirements. Starting with the President’s FY 2006 Budget, this report was no longer produced. Subsequently, the Overview began to fill this role. This year to ensure compliance with Section 113, new chapters are added to include reports from each Military Department on their respective funding, military mission accomplishments, core functions, and force structure. Key initiatives incorporated in the FY 2014 Defense budget. Our budget is formulated based on aligning program priorities and resources based on the President’s strategic guidance. This year’s budget involves key themes to: achieve a deeper program alignment of our future force structure with resource availability; maintain a mission ready force; continue to emphasize efficiencies by being even better stewards of taxpayer dollars; and continue to take care of our people and their families. Implementing Defense Strategic Guidance. The FY 2014 budget request continues the force structure reductions made in the FY 2013 budget request. Following...
