"Baroque Style" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: * Listen to one (1) composition that demonstrates the qualities of the Baroque musical style. It may be from the Websites below or from this week’s Music Folder. Identify your choice, and describe it by relating key terms from the textbook to your selection. Explain what you like or admire about the work. Briefly, compare it to a modern soundtrack or song that evokes a similar mood.
AntionoVivaldi’s Four Seasons, is a group of four violin concertos in which sonnets were written to describe the seasons. I found Four Seasons Spring very refreshing. As I listened closely, I could hear sounds in the music that mimicked birds chirping, a brook, a breeze and a thunderstorm. All the sounds of spring are in the music and remind me of a beautiful spring day. The concerto begins in allegro and slows down and picks up again as if it is telling a story of spring.
What I like most about the Four Seasons’ Spring is that I feel refreshed, renewed, everything that spring represents. After listening to all four of the concertos, I was able to relate to each season through the music. I also enjoy jazz music and I can sit and listen to the instruments and they sometimes sound like words that speak to your soul and spirit, soothing and refreshing, creating a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the day.

...HUM 112 Week 4 Discussion #1 10/28/2014 "Beethoven; Art and Protest in the 1800s" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: * Listen to one (1) composition (i.e., for a symphony) by Beethoven, a transitional figure between classical and romantic music. Identify the composition that you listened to, and determine whether you would characterize the chosen composition as either the Classical or Romantic style of music. Explain the key features that lead you to your conclusion. Briefly, identify one (1) modern musician who you believe was great at one type of music yet pioneered another. I listened to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in its entirety. I’m not musically inclined and I do not have the ability to read or write music, however after listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 is Romantic more than classical. Although you can find some of both characteristics while listening like the frequent changes in the tempo that is typically found in Romantic music and the texture of Classical music which is essentially homophonic. While listening to the first movement, the gentle sounds of the instruments warming up softly with violins played with a structure rhythm and drums adding to the volume. The next two movements was at a faster pace. There was some emotion present in the way the music went from fast to slow as the volume build from soft to very loud. The final movement seemed more relaxing to listen...

...HUM 112 Week 2 Discussion 10/20/2014 "The Arts and Royalty; Philosophers Debate Politics" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: * The philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke disagreed on the understanding of political authority, with Locke taking what is commonly called the “liberal” view. Choose a side (be brave perhaps; take a side you actually disagree with). Using the writings of each given in our class text or at the Websites below, make your case for the side you chose and against the other side. Very briefly, identify one (1) modern situation in the world where these issues are significant. Philosophers Debate Politics * Chapter 24 (pp. 768-9) * Hobbes: text at http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl302/texts/hobbes/leviathan-contents.html; summary at http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hobbes-moral/; also http://jim.com/hobbes.htm * Locke: text at http://www.thenagain.info/Classes/Sources/Locke-2ndTreatise.html; General background of the concept at http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/teachers/lesson_plans/pdfs/unit1_12.pdf The philosopher that I mostly agree with is John Locke. Locke expressed radical views of government. He thought that government is honestly required to serve the people by protecting their life, rights and property. He believed in having checks and balances to limit the power of government. He criticized a nation under cruel and oppressive government and...

Hum 112 Voltaire’s Candide

...Assignment 1: Reading Selection: Voltaire’s Candide REDACTED Dr. Davis HUM 112 July 27, 2014 Introduction Francois-Marie Arouet was a Parisian philosopher. Using the pen name Voltaire, he wrote “plays, novels, poems, and history” (Sayre, 2012, p. 815). Being a pessimist provided him the creativeness to write his greatest work named Candide. Chapter 6: An Act of Faith There are two surprise endings. One surprise ending came when Dr. Pangloss was taken away for unknown reasons or was selected along with Candice at random. I’m presuming it was for speaking his optimistic opinions against local ideals. The other surprise ending came when another earthquake occurred approximately a week after human sacrifices had concluded. The point of realization came when Candice deliberated the outcome of why Pangloss was hanged however, he may have resigned to accepting it as the people of Lisbon being evil and ignorant. Candice had previously discovered “a world filled with stupidity, plagued by evil, mired in ignorance...” (Sayre, p. 817). Additionally, another earthquake happened just over a week later even though an auto-de-fe was carried out to prevent earthquakes. The author somewhat convinced me of the surprise ending. However, confining both men for crimes that were not similar to the Biscayan and two Portuguese prevented me from accepting the full value of the surprise ending. The chapter does not give an indication of the reason for Pangloss being hanged versus...

Contrast Analysis

...Introduction The focus of the present thesis is the passive voice, perceived from a semantico-syntactic point of view. My primary aim is to explore the use and functions of the passive voice in English, examining the reasons which motivate an author to prefer the passive form to the active one. Secondary interest is devoted to the function and the use of the passive voice in Czech. As research material I have chosen the short stories by the American writer O. Henry and their Czech translations by Stanislav Klíma. The reasons why I have chosen the genre of a short story are that it is noted for the unity of time, place and action. I believe that due to this fact, the results of my research will give higher evidence of the use of the passive voice since the basis for comparison is unified and compact contrary to, for example, a novel. For the same reason of evidence, I explore just the translations of one translator, since everyone has his/her personal style and different way of thinking and understanding of original text. I am interested in the issue of information packaging, especially in the different ways of expressing one and the same reality in the two languages: when both active and passive versions are formally permitted, what factors favour the choice of one over other? The passive voice is a phenomenon which is involved both in English and in Czech but in unlike extent. As far as I know, the passive voice is a favourite means of expression in English whereas in Czech...

Telemedicine

...dealing with markedly increasing referral rates. Rough calculations suggest that only about 0.1% of the potential telemedicine demand from the developing world is being met. Possible reasons include the referrers being too busy and a perceived loss of control. If this analysis is correct, then the right strategy for future telemedicine in developing countries will be to concentrate on the construction of within-country networks that demonstrably alter health outcomes, can be shown to be cost-effective and sustainable, and will provide a model for other countries to copy. .............................................................. Telemedicine has been used in the industrialized world for some years, albeit with rather patchy success.1 The initial enthusiasm of the 1990s has given way to a more reflective view of the place of telemedicine in health-care delivery, as many of the pilot projects have failed to be sustained once their seed funding ran out. There is little routine telemedicine activity on an enterprise scale, e.g. at...
