HUM 112 WEEK 10 ASSIGNMENT 3 - CULTURAL ACTIVITY REPORT
As a way of experiencing the Humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of “cultural activity” that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect). Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM 112 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance. Note: This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not
the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 111. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 111, but this HUM 112 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
1. Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater, dance, or musical performance before
the end of Week 10. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our
course well. Have fun doing this.
2. Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
• Clearly identify the event location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction
upon arriving at the event.
• Provide specific information and a description of at least two (2) pieces.
• Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the
event.
• Use at least the class text as a reference…...

...HUM 112 Week 2 Discussion 10/20/2014 "The Arts and Royalty; Philosophers Debate Politics" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response: * The philosophers Thomas Hobbes and John Locke disagreed on the understanding of political authority, with Locke taking what is commonly called the “liberal” view. Choose a side (be brave perhaps; take a side you actually disagree with). Using the writings of each given in our class text or at the Websites below, make your case for the side you chose and against the other side. Very briefly, identify one (1) modern situation in the world where these issues are significant. Philosophers Debate Politics * Chapter 24 (pp. 768-9) * Hobbes: text at http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/phl302/texts/hobbes/leviathan-contents.html; summary at http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hobbes-moral/; also http://jim.com/hobbes.htm * Locke: text at http://www.thenagain.info/Classes/Sources/Locke-2ndTreatise.html; General background of the concept at http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/teachers/lesson_plans/pdfs/unit1_12.pdf The philosopher that I mostly agree with is John Locke. Locke expressed radical views of government. He thought that government is honestly required to serve the people by protecting their life, rights and property. He believed in having checks and balances to limit the power of government. He criticized a nation under cruel and oppressive government......

...HUM 112 Week 1 Discussion 10/12/14 "Baroque Style" Please respond to one (1) of the following, using sources under the Explore heading as the basis of your response:  * Listen to one (1) composition that demonstrates the qualities of the Baroque musical style. It may be from the Websites below or from this week’s Music Folder. Identify your choice, and describe it by relating key terms from the textbook to your selection. Explain what you like or admire about the work. Briefly, compare it to a modern soundtrack or song that evokes a similar mood.  AntionoVivaldi’s Four Seasons, is a group of four violin concertos in which sonnets were written to describe the seasons. I found Four Seasons Spring very refreshing. As I listened closely, I could hear sounds in the music that mimicked birds chirping, a brook, a breeze and a thunderstorm. All the sounds of spring are in the music and remind me of a beautiful spring day. The concerto begins in allegro and slows down and picks up again as if it is telling a story of spring. What I like most about the Four Seasons’ Spring is that I feel refreshed, renewed, everything that spring represents. After listening to all four of the concertos, I was able to relate to each season through the music. I also enjoy jazz music and I can sit and listen to the instruments and they sometimes sound like words that speak to your soul and spirit, soothing and refreshing, creating a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the......

Identify the composition that you listened to, and determine whether you would characterize the chosen composition as either the Classical or Romantic style of music. Explain the key features that lead you to your conclusion. Briefly, identify one (1) modern musician who you believe was great at one type of music yet pioneered another. I listened to Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 in its entirety. I’m not musically inclined and I do not have the ability to read or write music, however after listening to Beethoven’s Symphony No.6 is Romantic more than classical. Although you can find some of both characteristics while listening like the frequent changes in the tempo that is typically found in Romantic music and the texture of Classical music which is essentially homophonic. While listening to the first movement, the gentle sounds of the instruments warming up softly with violins played with a structure rhythm and drums adding to the volume. The next two movements was at a faster pace. There was some emotion present in the way the music went from fast to slow as the volume build from soft to very loud. The final movement seemed more relaxing to......

Hum 112 Assignment 1

...Assignment 1: A Modest Proposal Summary xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Strayer University HUM 112 Dr. Christina Russu December 11, 2014 A Modest Proposal Jonathon Swift’s, A Modest Proposal is a view of how the Irish seen poverty in their country. Swift’s proposal sheds light on poverty and offers a solution to control those who could not help themselves. Children of the poor could be sold to Ireland’s wealthy land-owners, a meat market, with children as young as one being sold as food. Implementing this proposal would combat population issues and unemployment, by sparing poor families the expense of being responsible for their young all while earning extra income. Swift was very particular about the details of his proposal by providing data that notates the number of children to sell, their age, their weight and a price. He even goes as far as to offer recipes for cooking the poor Irish young. This perfect solution to the problem, 100,000 children from the poverty-stricken Irish population can be sold to the rich as a source of food. One child is enough to serve two dishes at a banquet and leftovers seasoned with pepper and salt would be sufficient. The surprise ending of A Modest Proposal came at the beginning of Swift’s work. Proposal suggested that cannibalism as a solution to controlling Ireland’s population of poor, which makes up of mostly women and children. Swift’s proposal was direct and symbolic of the rich taking advantage of the poor by living at the expense...

Cultural Activity Report

...Assignment 3: Cultural Activity Report Student: Danny Franco Professor: Dr. Caren Stayer HUM 111 December 12, 2014 For my cultural event, I visited the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center in Los Angeles, California on Thursday, December 11, 2014. I had originally planned to visit the National Museum of Art and History in Washington D.C., but I found myself in Los Angeles due to the birth of my Grandson. I attended the museum by myself. The Getty Museum was originally started in 1954 in J. Paul Getty’s home in Pacific Palisades. After Getty’s death, the Getty Trust took over the museum. The collection eventually outgrew the site and the Getty Center was built in the Santa Monica Mountains above interstate 405. After inputting the museum’s address I into my phone, Google Maps routed me through the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. The area seems very affluent as I passed several large homes with private gates. I followed the directions and eventually arrived at the Getty Center parking garage. There is a tram that runs from the parking garage to the museum. The tram was very clean and had a very modern feel. The tram ride is very scenic and the views of Los Angeles are incredible as you climb the mountain towards the museum. Upon arrival at the Getty Center, the first thing I noticed was that the floor, steps and all of the walls were constructed of travertine. Upon closer inspection, I noticed small fossils encrusted in the travertine. It seemed like a very...

Cultural Activity Report

...Week 10 Assignment 3: Cultural Activity Report John Smith  Dr. Justyna Japola-DesVergnes HUM 112 September 6, 2015 For the Week 10, Assignment 3, I chose to attend the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, located in the “Museum District” of Richmond, Virginia. The museum was opened on January 16, 1936, which was during the great depression. I attended the museum with my Fiancé on September 5, 2015 and was the first time attending, for the both of us. It is currently open 365 days a year, and offers free admission other than to any of the special exhibits. Upon researching different museums and events to attend in the area, I decided that this museum would be most appropriate because it has a very extensive American art collection, housing items from the late 17th through the mid-20th century. It is currently hosting the exhibition Spotlight Loan: Eastman Johnson’s Views of Mount Vernon, which I found to be the highlight of my trip. In the text, I noted that there are numerous paintings by Eastman Johnson, an American painter, as well. One that particularly stood out to me was Negro Life in the South, 1959. The painting was of his father’s household slaves in Washington, DC. The slaves were portrayed as content, while playing music, dancing and conversing outside of their quarters. While some saw them as cheerful, abolitionists noted the crumbling architecture of the quarters in comparison to the house beside them, and also their tattered clothing (Sayre, 2015, p.967). In...
