The other surprise ending came when another earthquake occurred approximately a week after human sacrifices had concluded. The point of realization came when Candice deliberated the outcome of why Pangloss was hanged however, he may have resigned to accepting it as the people of Lisbon being evil and ignorant. Candice had previously discovered “a world filled with stupidity, plagued by evil, mired in ignorance...” (Sayre, p. 817).
