Final Assignment Hum/176

...Final Assignment HUM/176 Part 1- You are the chief editor of a large metropolitan daily newspaper. One of your reporters is caught fabricating sources and making up facts. How do you handle the situation, from disciplining the reporter to explaining it to your readers? As the editor there is a responsibility to both journalism and to the public to report accurate news stories. Through this public apology, I the editor assure you the readers that the fabrication of the material of reporter John Doe was not a reflection of the reputation of this newspaper to print misleading false stories and the direct result of the deception caused ABC Newspaper to terminate employment however the reporter wanted to comment on his role in reporting the news. I would like to apologize for misleading the readers of this fine newspaper and to give the main reason for my deception. News is as time sensitive medium. It requires up- to- date reporting. If a person reports a story several days after the event happens; no one will be interested nor be impacted by the story. The purpose of reporting the news is to bring awareness to the people who are impacted by it. The desperation in bringing the story first caused a loss in judgment and ethics. With the increased delivery methods, including newspapers, television, radio, online newspaper web pages, and blogging, It became apparent that to capture the audience I would have to use sensationalistic tactics to do so. These tactics in journalism...

...Hum/176 8/19/2012 Lisa Prince Week 4 assignment Social media has taken over the world over the past few tears. From social media sites like twitter, facebook, and youtube many different companies, and people have all benefited from the use of social media. Since the internet is filled with computer hackers, scams, and sexual predators the disadvantages of social media can outweigh the advantages of social media at times. However the disadvantages of social media have not stopped social media networks from taking over the internet. Having the ability to do anything you can imagine from a social network for your business use or personal life has come to life. Using social media to find lost, old friends or family members was the main idea of social media networks when it first hit the internet scene. Then the genius behind the scenes explored different options to open up the door for more benefits of social media, like advertising a business, internet dating, job searching, night life, or even to receive news before it airs live on television networks. The internet has always been a dangerous thing to use even in the early 90’s some websites posted messages to use their website with caution, but with the evolution of social media it makes it hard for any website to protect their users. From computer hackers, sexual predators, and con artist make hard to trust anything on the internet or social media. Computer hackers love social media users who like to pay bills...

... our job to make sure that we provide all of the information that we have as accurately and honestly as possible. We also have to be sure that we provide every side of the story so that our readers are able to make the most informed decision possible, since they very often base their vote off of what they read from our hand. I did struggle at times, with how socially responsible my report was. It can be hard to make sure that you provide all of the information that you can to the public so that they really know who they are/will be voting for – which is why the background research is so crucial. But I feel that there is also a line when it comes to the amount of and type of information that I provide about a candidate. How much is too much? After all, do they not deserve a certain amount of privacy as well? So, as I said, walking that line of providing information, while also respecting the candidates was very difficult to do. But I do think that I did a pretty good job of it. I really cannot express the importance of responsible journalism. The honesty and integrity of our reporting can have an incredible influence on the public opinion of reporters, the news, and politics. Too often, each of these is considered to be full of lies – it is often made into jokes how unreliable some news stations and politicians can be. Free speech and the ability to choose who represents the people are both positive and classic American values. Unfortunately, irresponsible reporting can......

For example, music, internet, television, and the news are considered media convergence. These are some examples of media convergence that just about everyone uses in their day to day lives. These are also examples that keep changing drastically over a very short time span. This kind of media change requires us to keep changing drastically over a very short time span. It also makes learn how to stay on our toes and how to be able to adjust to the changes. I think that this kind of media convergence will stay evolving every few months and becoming more and more high tech with their changes. The internet has changed so much and most people would not know what to do with themselves if the internet went away. However, not everybody has or knows how to use the internet even with times and technology the way it is. People turn to the news every morning or night so they can be aware of what is going on in the world and their surroundings. I think something else that would be considered media convergence would have to be the smart phones. They have some people who stay on the go and do their school work and even their...

...Raymond Heller Week 6 Hum. 176 Movies and television has been the biggest forms of entertainment since there creation. These days we have a lot of different types of visual entertainment such as, video games, cell phones, and computers, along with movies and television. Movies were first invented in the 1880’s. Motion pictures were exhibited as a carnival novelty, and then developed into one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment. The movie theater was considered a cheaper and a more simple way to provide entertainment to mass population. Before the creation of movie theaters people would travel a great distance to see major dioramas or to go to amusement parks. The most popular form of visual entertainment is television. Television has had started many arguments about it’s social and cultural impact. Many people have said that television has had a negative impact on children and young adults, influencing their choices, and contributing to increased teenage sex and violence. There are some things that are some things that are on television that children and young adults should not be exposed to, However, parents can put a block on the channels that they do not want their children to be exposed to. Television also has its advantages, you are able to watch the news and be more informed with what is going on in the world, and it is a source of entertainment for the whole family. I think that the social influences of visual entertainment are no...

...Journalist E-mail University of Phoenix HUM/176 Rodney Brown Hey Tara, Thanks for checking in with me to see how the new job at the paper is going. I got to say I thought it would be easier but I am finding out that to be a real journalist is a very hard thing to do. We both know that being the “fourth estate” is not without its challenges. I struggle at times to balance my stories so that they do not reflect my own personal political slants. I know we are to be fair and honest but it is difficult when the other papers race to print whatever they want without fact checking then print a small retraction the next day. The story I posted recently has drew a lot of criticism, you remember the one on the Republican Party hijacked by the religious right. We are both atheists so you know how I feel about religion in politics, there is separation of church, and state for a reason, and the religious right is making the GOP look nuttier every day. It was hard for me not to pull the story apart with my own non-secular beliefs. I tried to use different sites to illustrate the point but take a site like Matt Drudge’s “Drudge Report” and you might as well be validating the story without double-checking as they are of that bent. I tried to use Colbert Nation but it leaned too far to the other side and was satire at points. I really had to struggle and find balanced sites like BBC News and the like. We reports hold a lot of power in the system. People outright assume......

There used to be clear distinctions between the Internet, TV, print media, and social media. But now in this day and age we have newspapers and TV shows that have websites with real time video and feeds formatted specifically for smart phones. We can now stream movies on the Internet instead of watching regular TV. TV shows are also available to stream on the Internet as well via Hulu. We can also talk back and participate in TV shows via social media. With technology and the creation of new and improved electronic devices we are able to have easy access to mass media. Today the mass media has developed along with the digital age and is moving as fast as technology is. Media convergence has allowed old forms of media and new forms of media to combine into a huge melting pot to reach the masses at a faster pace than it has before. | What is meant by the term media convergence with regard to business, and how has it affected everyday life? | Media convergence with regard to business means that it broadens and helps the business expand into something greater...

How has the Internet changed the way many Americans consume information? Explain the importance and value of the availability of information on the Internet. Americans have internet as if it were a radio or a television. You can find everything and anything on the internet. The internet has many features to keep it alive and addictive. People do many things online in today’s society rather than in person. They also make more contact through the computer rather than the phone. People don't deal with things face to face like they use to, but more through the computer. Information is available to everyone. The internet has created a means of constant communication, it has widened the open market, and it allows news to quickly reach everyone. 6.) How might you determine if information found online is trustworthy? Describe credibility issues with information found on the Internet. This is a very important question to all students and writers. The trick to the problem is to look through the validity of the source. Is it published on an .edu domain, or an .org? Who is the author of the work? What other kinds of material are available on the website? You should only use it if it was written by a reputed source such as an academic or industry professional. If not, then you are better off finding a new one. 7.) In what ways......

Hum/176 Final

...Week Nine Final Assignment Jane Doe HUM/176 February 5, 2009 John Doe Part One As the director of a local television station it would be my duty to report the news that would have the greatest impact on my community and its residents. The death of a celebrity will be news worthy, entertaining, and bring in ratings but would not affect my community like the closing of a city park three days a week would. The primary role of the media is to accurately report on the issues that directly impact its viewers and communities. The death of a celebrity does not have much staying power beyond its entertainment value and furthermore has no direct effect on the community or its residents. There would be a larger impact on the local community by covering the story of the local park closing. Residents and families would be impacted the most by a city park closing and having their opinions and views would be vital to the coverage of the story. City council members would also be interviewed about the budgetary issues and the reasoning for this decision to further inform viewers. The social responsibility of news media is to present unbiased coverage of issues that affect the public; however, these days it seems that there is really no social responsibility of the news media as most stations are for profit businesses owned by larger media corporations. The responsibility it seems these days is to the company’s shareholders. There are so many ways that consumers get...

Hum 176 Paper

...hum 176 Part One Our lead story tonight is the city council voted to close our city parks 3 days a week in order to save money. This will have impact on our family who like to utilize the parks for family picnics and the playground. As this story continues to unfold we will keep our viewers updated by our website and Facebook, and all the information we have will be provided to our viewers. We will have a special link on our website that has the days and hours the parks are open as well as any changes to the scheduled days. As the director of this news station I chose the parks story because it impacts more of our listening area. The celebrity death will get coverage but as a mention in unrelated news. Since the celebrity news will be good for rating, it will get enough time to share the details with the viewers. We can have more information about this story on our website for those looking for more details then we cover on the news. The role of the media is to cover all stories but also know what its viewers are looking for. If we do not give them the important information about their community then they can get it elsewhere and that will hurt our ratings. As a news station it is our responsibility to make all the information we have available to our viewers and to do this we put the information on our website, make it available for goggling and have a link on our social networking sites like...
