...basis over the internet. Immediate news media has had a significant effect on our culture. It allows us to get the news as it happens, and become more aware and involved. The internet would be my biggest competition, and I need to keep this in mind when making decisions for the station. The station has to try and keep up with the internet whenever possible. With this being said, I am faced with the task of deciding what story should be used as the lead story during our next broadcast. Right now I have two stories that have great potential to be lead stories. I need to come up with the solution that will benefit both the television station and the viewers. The first story is about the city council voting to close city parks three days a week to save money. With this story I would like to have as many viewers tuned in as possible, because this is an issue that could affect the lives of those who use the city’s parks. The second story is about the death of a major celebrity. I know this story will get the viewers’ attention, and it will get the station higher ratings which directly affects the station. Although, I feel the city park story is more important and relevant to my viewers, it is my responsibility to keep up the ratings of my station. My solution would be to run the death of the celebrity as the lead story. Although, the importance of this story to my viewers is much less, I know that it is information that people want to hear about. Entertainment is a huge part......

Hum/176 Week 4

...Hum/176 8/19/2012 Lisa Prince Week 4 assignment Social media has taken over the world over the past few tears. From social media sites like twitter, facebook, and youtube many different companies, and people have all benefited from the use of social media. Since the internet is filled with computer hackers, scams, and sexual predators the disadvantages of social media can outweigh the advantages of social media at times. However the disadvantages of social media have not stopped social media networks from taking over the internet. Having the ability to do anything you can imagine from a social network for your business use or personal life has come to life. Using social media to find lost, old friends or family members was the main idea of social media networks when it first hit the internet scene. Then the genius behind the scenes explored different options to open up the door for more benefits of social media, like advertising a business, internet dating, job searching, night life, or even to receive news before it airs live on television networks. The internet has always been a dangerous thing to use even in the early 90’s some websites posted messages to use their website with caution, but with the evolution of social media it makes it hard for any website to protect their users. From computer hackers, sexual predators, and con artist make hard to trust anything on the internet or social media. Computer hackers love social media users who like to pay bills......

Hum 176 Week 3 Question1

...HUM/176 Week 3 Assignment Hello, I hear so many good things and am so fascinated with what you can do with the Internet. Finding all this information so quickly must make your life very easy. But please tell me: how do you assess the value of all this information you find on the Internet? How can you be sure that it is reliable and credible? Also, I have heard the term “digital divide.” What exactly does it mean, and how do you think this divide could be bridged? Thank you for helping me to understand these issues! Best regards, Your friend Dear Friend, I just wanted to see if I can help you understand a little about the internet and answer some of the questions you had. In the beginning you had to have a phone line, but the big cable companies started to use the cable system to transfer the data making it faster and more reliable. Private companies would start-up web browsers and search engines, internet service providers and email; all quickly changed the landscape and the culture around us. Many people became rich and powerful, but along with them came the scammers and those that were less ethical. Because of them the reliability of what you were reading, viewing or watching became suspect. There was so much money to be made because the net had exploded into almost every household in America. You had asked how to check the reliability of what you are reading; there are many ways to do this. The simplest way is to look at the internet as a vast array...

...text-based sponsored links that appear in Google searches or on affiliated sites. “We are in the really boring part of the business…the boring big business,” Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt says.2 What Google’s ads lack in creativity, they make up in precision. Google’s AdWords advertising system has made advertising both targeted (by keyword or geographically) and inexpensive (ad buyers can preset daily spending limits). This has revolutionized advertising and enabled millions of new small advertisers to afford their own customized advertising plan along with traditional big advertisers. Google also notes that “we will do our best to provide the most relevant and useful advertising.” Google doesn’t like ads that create an “annoying interruption.” 3 The company’s own Google Toolbar blocks pop-up advertising—a kind of annoying Internet advertising it doesn’t make (but its competitors do). Looking beyond text-only Internet ads, Google is expanding to other advertising media, with subsidiaries to automate and target sales of radio broadcasting ads (through its acquisition of dMarc Advertising), newspaper ads (Google is already placing ads in more than 650 newspapers), click-to-play video ads (particularly in conjunction with its YouTube property), and television ads. Google is also testing ad placements in mobile phone search (advertising’s “third screen,” after television and computer screens). All of Google’s advertising ventures are based on the Internet, Google’s analytical tools,......

Hum 176 - Week 3

...Disney Movies are more than entertainment; they are a piece of pop culture that generations of children will remember forever. It all started in 1937 when Disney released its first feature length film, Snow White. To date, Disney has released more than 300 films. Each generation will have its own memory of their favorite Disney movies. For instance, any child born in the last 15 years will remember Toy Story. It was released in 1995 and followed by Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3. Disney really made an impact on kids with Toy Story. It was a wonderful story about a boy and the friendship between his two toys, a lovable, stuffed cowboy named Woody (voice by Tom Hanks), and an astronaut toy named Buzz Light-year (voice by Tim Allen). Today, Toy Story and the characters are a big part of Disneyland Amusement Parks. There are Toy Story rides that excite kids of all ages. It seems with every Disney movie launch there are mass toy sales and fast food restaurants selling “Happy Meals’ with Disney movie character toys. It is almost impossible to avoid the media and advertising explosion after a Disney movie release. What is nice about Disney movies is that parents can feel good about their kids watching them because Disney represents “wholesome.” A parent can be assured that the content of the movie will be age appropriate for their child. Disney movies are an icon in American pop culture. What Disney movie do you remember the most?...

...can be touching or entertaining. YouTube’s basic purpose is just what it advertises, broadcast yourself. 2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society? I believe the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society is connecting people no matter the amount of distance. A lot of people who are sites like Facebook are on there to reconnect to old friends and to keep in touch with family. I believe this is the reason why business are starting to form their own pages on social media sites, to take advantage of free advertising and reach a new customer base. Individuals who create memberships on social sites often join to connect to other people who wouldn’t be in their lives otherwise. 3. What are the greatest problems of social media for individuals and society? Some of the greatest problems of social media sites is the same problem as it is real life. Cyber bulling is a harsh reality to all social media sites, this can come in the form of rumor starting or people bashing. Just because one involves a keyboard and an internet connection doesn’t make it any less dramatic to the victim of bullying. This can go for business as well, a group of people can destroy a reputation of a company or a product and have it wiped off the map. There are some groups of people who bash other individuals and companies in their spare time, just because their tired of the quiet on whatever site they belong to. 4. How have modern social......

...Part One: Being the director of a local new station, I would cover the local story first with a high recap of the celebrity death to follow. When people tune into the news, they want to know what is happening around them first. A celebrity death will make headlines on every kind of network, but the local happenings will only be the local newscast and be more vital. The park story will have more meaning to the people of the community and could affect the everyday happenings for them. With cities closing parks 3 days a week to save money, I would want to the communities to know why and how this will change their everyday lives and schedules. How was closing the parks 3 days a week chosen to save money or some other programs that could be out there. How is the closing of the parks going to affect the city workers jobs that maintain the parks? I would also want to inform the communities of why the money is being saved and what the funds are being used for instead. It would be important to inform the people of options that they may to help get the parks reopened if necessary or who they would try and petition to help with it as well. After covering the local community story of park closures, I would cover the celebrity death with as much accuracy as I could. People will continue to talk about the celebrity death for a long time, so it can be covered after the more pertinent local story. Celebrity stories tend to be very wide spread and have enough coverage with the different......
