Hum/176 Week 9 Final

...Part One As director of a local television station some of the primary roles we have in the delivery of news media to the public are: to inform the viewers of what is going on, explain how it may affect them, educate them on how they could help or change the situation, and at the same time, allow them to be entertained so that they keep coming back to my station to get their news. How we get our news has changed drastically over the last century. We can now access the news through television, newsprint, radio, and the internet. We can find out what is going on anywhere in the world on a 24/7 basis over the internet. Immediate news media has had a significant effect on our culture. It allows us to get the news as it happens, and become more aware and involved. The internet would be my biggest competition, and I need to keep this in mind when making decisions for the station. The station has to try and keep up with the internet whenever possible. With this being said, I am faced with the task of deciding what story should be used as the lead story during our next broadcast. Right now I have two stories that have great potential to be lead stories. I need to come up with the solution that will benefit both the television station and the viewers. The first story is about the city council voting to close city parks three days a week to save money. With this story I would like to have as many viewers tuned in as possible, because this is an issue that could affect the......

Hum/176 Week 4

...Hum/176 8/19/2012 Lisa Prince Week 4 assignment Social media has taken over the world over the past few tears. From social media sites like twitter, facebook, and youtube many different companies, and people have all benefited from the use of social media. Since the internet is filled with computer hackers, scams, and sexual predators the disadvantages of social media can outweigh the advantages of social media at times. However the disadvantages of social media have not stopped social media networks from taking over the internet. Having the ability to do anything you can imagine from a social network for your business use or personal life has come to life. Using social media to find lost, old friends or family members was the main idea of social media networks when it first hit the internet scene. Then the genius behind the scenes explored different options to open up the door for more benefits of social media, like advertising a business, internet dating, job searching, night life, or even to receive news before it airs live on television networks. The internet has always been a dangerous thing to use even in the early 90’s some websites posted messages to use their website with caution, but with the evolution of social media it makes it hard for any website to protect their users. From computer hackers, sexual predators, and con artist make hard to trust anything on the internet or social media. Computer hackers love social media users who like to pay bills......

Hum 176 Week 7

...Hello, It is good to chat with you again! This last assignment was a pretty tough one on more than one count. Not only did I have to cover the current political campaign, but I also had to do incredible amounts of online research to make sure that I provided as much background as I could for my reader. And as you know, it can be very difficult to sift through all of the many sites that are out there that claim to be reporting valid political information so along with making sure that I provided quality information, I had to make sure that I was only researching quality information as well. Sites such as Politico and The Hill are clearly reputable and so I used them quite a bit during my reporting. Other sites, such as The Drudge Report and Daily Kos are both basically open blogs and do not provide information that I felt warranted including in my work. For example, it is clear just by looking at the home page of the Drudge Report, that it could never be used as a reputable source. Unfortunately, not all sites are as clearly laid out and it was very time consuming picking my sources. As a journalist, it is my responsibility to be sure that I provide a fair, honest, and balanced account of the campaign. The people of the United States rely on reporters for the majority of the information that they get on the campaign. They are not able to have the up-close sessions that we reporters have so often. Because we tend to be privy to much more information than the public, it is......

Hum 176 Week 3 Question1

...HUM/176 Week 3 Assignment Hello, I hear so many good things and am so fascinated with what you can do with the Internet. Finding all this information so quickly must make your life very easy. But please tell me: how do you assess the value of all this information you find on the Internet? How can you be sure that it is reliable and credible? Also, I have heard the term “digital divide.” What exactly does it mean, and how do you think this divide could be bridged? Thank you for helping me to understand these issues! Best regards, Your friend Dear Friend, I just wanted to see if I can help you understand a little about the internet and answer some of the questions you had. In the beginning you had to have a phone line, but the big cable companies started to use the cable system to transfer the data making it faster and more reliable. Private companies would start-up web browsers and search engines, internet service providers and email; all quickly changed the landscape and the culture around us. Many people became rich and powerful, but along with them came the scammers and those that were less ethical. Because of them the reliability of what you were reading, viewing or watching became suspect. There was so much money to be made because the net had exploded into almost every household in America. You had asked how to check the reliability of what you are reading; there are many ways to do this. The simplest way is to look at the internet as a vast array...

...affiliated sites. “We are in the really boring part of the business…the boring big business,” Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt says.2 What Google’s ads lack in creativity, they make up in precision. Google’s AdWords advertising system has made advertising both targeted (by keyword or geographically) and inexpensive (ad buyers can preset daily spending limits). This has revolutionized advertising and enabled millions of new small advertisers to afford their own customized advertising plan along with traditional big advertisers. Google also notes that “we will do our best to provide the most relevant and useful advertising.” Google doesn’t like ads that create an “annoying interruption.” 3 The company’s own Google Toolbar blocks pop-up advertising—a kind of annoying Internet advertising it doesn’t make (but its competitors do). Looking beyond text-only Internet ads, Google is expanding to other advertising media, with subsidiaries to automate and target sales of radio broadcasting ads (through its acquisition of dMarc Advertising), newspaper ads (Google is already placing ads in more than 650 newspapers), click-to-play video ads (particularly in conjunction with its YouTube property), and television ads. Google is also testing ad placements in mobile phone search (advertising’s “third screen,” after television and computer screens). All of Google’s advertising ventures are based on the Internet, Google’s analytical tools, and its enormous computer system. “These new platforms,......

It is basically a white man’s game and it has been for far too long. There will be cyclical outrage where people say, where minority groups say this is ridiculous. If we are black all we ever get to play are criminals. If we are Asian we maybe we play a scientist. Where are the lead roles? They do not exist. Part of it is a real timidity on the part of the network. They think that they will not make as much money. They think they won’t get as big of an audience. ...Immediately upon going to MSNBC.com CNN.com, they talked about breaking news of Egypts. On all three sites, I found links to other information about how President in Egypt was preparing to step down. There are also links to click to view videos of how bad the situation really is. CNN.com tells you things such as how the military rulers dissolve parliament and put constitution on hold in moves cautiously welcomed by protestors. I found it interesting how FOXnews.com shows photos and videos about how the Egyptian military dissolves parliament. The site also gives sponsor links to find other information about the breaking news. Currently, FOXnews.com says, Military rulers take sweeping action to dismantle Mubarak's autocratic legacy as they dissolve parliament, suspend constitution and promise elections in moves cautiously welcomed by protesters. You can also recommend the story to people on Face book with a link. People on Face book might be inclined to view the link, since you viewed it and shared it with them on Face book. This increases CNN's publicity, and more people will view the top stories as a result. MSBNC.com has an article about how Egypt puts Midwest peace efforts on hold. CNN has information about the revolt in Egypt and how the people are waiting to see what the President has to say. Upon going to FOXnews.com, I found the article immediately it had bolded letters that said Egyptian Military Dissolves Parliament. This caught my attention and guided me to click on......

...Rating the News Sites The links that are used are FOXNews.com and CNN.com. The commentary associated with the stories are the same, but some of the reporter’s words are different such as FOX News use the word “five people” and CNN uses the words “five clergy” , FOX News also used ‘molested’ and CNN used the words “abuse victims.” Even though the story is about the same thing, the reporters’ words are different. Both stories where from interviews that the Pope had apologizing to five people who were molested as children by a priest where a march was held in London. FOX News and CNN are both great station that covers news that happens around the world. Both companies take pride in their works and want to make sure that their viewers are interesting in the stories that they reports. Both FOX News and CNN cover the news 24-hours a day and the information from the stories they report are facts and not opinions. FOX News and CNN are well-known news medias that people all around the world depends on to keep them updated on what is going in the United States as well as other countries. In the story that FOX News and CNN reported about the Pope apologizing to the people that was molested by a priest when they were young, both news medias did tremendous interviews and provided coverage so that all the viewers on the internet and the viewers that watch it on TV could see the Pope apologizing and showing the protestors that march in Central London. Hum 176 Week 9 Final

...Part One: Being the director of a local new station, I would cover the local story first with a high recap of the celebrity death to follow. When people tune into the news, they want to know what is happening around them first. A celebrity death will make headlines on every kind of network, but the local happenings will only be the local newscast and be more vital. The park story will have more meaning to the people of the community and could affect the everyday happenings for them. With cities closing parks 3 days a week to save money, I would want to the communities to know why and how this will change their everyday lives and schedules. How was closing the parks 3 days a week chosen to save money or some other programs that could be out there. How is the closing of the parks going to affect the city workers jobs that maintain the parks? I would also want to inform the communities of why the money is being saved and what the funds are being used for instead. It would be important to inform the people of options that they may to help get the parks reopened if necessary or who they would try and petition to help with it as well. After covering the local community story of park closures, I would cover the celebrity death with as much accuracy as I could. People will continue to talk about the celebrity death for a long time, so it can be covered after the more pertinent local story. Celebrity stories tend to be very wide spread and have enough coverage with the different......
