The Internet: Ethical and Legal Issues

The “Information Superhighway”, or Internet, is a powerful medium for today’s information driven society. From its humble beginnings as a series of networks established to help the military and government share resources, it has become a place for people to engage in commerce and also for people to interact socially in both business and personal faculties. Along with the excellent opportunities for meaningful communication in this new atmosphere, the Internet has evolved as an open, democratic cyber society marked by free speech and volunteerism. It is a community gathering place for people to share ideas, concerns, stories and opinions, and to give help and assistance to one another. (Mills-Scofield) There has also arisen a series of problems. Whenever any major development in society is conceived, such as when telephones were introduced, problems ensue. The Internet, because of its modern nature is not really well dealt with when it comes to existing ethical and moral issues. Being that the Internet has fostered a new class of community that requires a unique category of moral values and ethical considerations. Things are always going to be dealt with differently when it comes to any revolutionary type of medium. For instance how can the federal government regulate interstate trade when it is electronically transmitted information? It is a whole new category, how…...

...Hum/176 8/19/2012 Lisa Prince Week 4 assignment Social media has taken over the world over the past few tears. From social media sites like twitter, facebook, and youtube many different companies, and people have all benefited from the use of social media. Since the internet is filled with computer hackers, scams, and sexual predators the disadvantages of social media can outweigh the advantages of social media at times. However the disadvantages of social media have not stopped social media networks from taking over the internet. Having the ability to do anything you can imagine from a social network for your business use or personal life has come to life. Using social media to find lost, old friends or family members was the main idea of social media networks when it first hit the internet scene. Then the genius behind the scenes explored different options to open up the door for more benefits of social media, like advertising a business, internet dating, job searching, night life, or even to receive news before it airs live on television networks. The internet has always been a dangerous thing to use even in the early 90’s some websites posted messages to use their website with caution, but with the evolution of social media it makes it hard for any website to protect their users. From computer hackers, sexual predators, and con artist make hard to trust anything on the internet or social media. Computer hackers love social media users who like to pay bills...

Where there is no benefit to the promisor or detriment to the promisee, no consideration is made. The rule was laid in the case Thomas v Thomas (1842). The court ruled that motive should not be confused with consideration and giving the house out of gratitude is not considered sufficient consideration. ...EMAIL TO FRIEND Hi, thank you for the email. I had a lot of fun doing the research on the campaign. At times it was difficult to decipher what was true and balanced. Politicians have a way or skewing the truth and making in look better than it is, or that their ideals and motives are to help the people. With all the media out there I have learned we all need to dig a little deeper into the issue and find a common ground. Being fair and honest is critically important to the out come of any situation and especially in politics. I visited some websites like Drudge Report and Daily Kos and what I found was not surprising. There was so much negative information on politicians. Don’t get me wrong there was some good stuff but the majority was on information of one sound bite, or one short comment and journalists blew it up into a huge scandal. It is these kinds of things that make all journalists and reporters look bad. The old saying is true “diet sells” and that’s never been more true than in politics. Looking back on all the situations I have been in and all the reading I have done, I don’t know whether I am shocked or not at the nasty games politicians play all to get an edge on their opponent. Politics currently is a nasty game but it wasn’t always like this. When media took over the scene things changed. Now the first to report a scandal and break the news was getting the ratings but the second to report had more facts but it wasn’t juicy enough and considered old......

Gap Legal Issue

...Child sweatshop shame threatens Gap's ethical image An Observer investigation into children making clothes has shocked the retail giant and may cause it to withdraw apparel ordered for Christmas • The Observer, Sunday 28 October 2007 A Gap worker straightens up clothing. Photograph: Paul Sakuma/AP Amitosh concentrates as he pulls the loops of thread through tiny plastic beads and sequins on the toddler's blouse he is making. Dripping with sweat, his hair is thinly coated in dust. In Hindi his name means 'happiness'. The hand-embroidered garment on which his tiny needle is working bears the distinctive logo of international fashion chain Gap. Amitosh is 10. The hardships that blight his young life, exposed by an undercover Observer investigation in the back streets of New Delhi, reveal a tragic consequence of the West's demand for cheap clothing. It exposes how, despite Gap's rigorous social audit systems launched in 2004 to weed out child labour in its production processes, the system is being abused by unscrupulous subcontractors. The result is that children, in this case working in conditions close to slavery, appear to still be making some of its clothes. Gap's own policy is that if it discovers children being used by contractors to make its clothes that contractor must remove the child from the workplace, provide it with access to schooling and a wage, and guarantee the opportunity of work on reaching a legal working age. It is a policy to stop the abuse of...

...Effects of Mass Media Brad Gober 1/12/2016 HUM/186 Anthony Debonis Effects of Mass Media “The more media we have, the more we think we are connected, yet we are really disconnected from each other (“JR”, 2015). Many people have different opinions when it comes to media. No one is wrong in how they feel media is portrayed. There are many positives and negatives media has shown over the decades. However, there are some people would prefer to have mass media than none at all. In this paper I will analyze the way mass media has changed over the generations and how it has transformed. Secondly, you will learn about how each development influenced the world. I will discuss media convergence and how it done and what my personal thoughts and opinions on this process is. In the very beginning of the century, America relied solely on newspapers and articles. The evolution of mass media has increased over the years basically by how technology has transformed. Before internet no one had the luxury of downloading an app for weather or news media. It started with a basic paper delivery. No one buys the newspaper anymore because of how far technology has come. Another major development was the radio. Radio could provide war information much faster than newspapers, and people desired to hear current events of war situations, and the situations of family overseas. Ten years later television came to dominate the media industry (“Evolution of Mass Media in the 20th Century, 2015). By...

In fact, the hospitality foodservice and hotel management industry deals with high pressure; management, service, food preparation, inventory control and so on. Therefore, it has to deal with different legal issues that affect the industry. The first legal issue described in this article is the liquor licence. A liquor licence is the authorization of consumption or sale of liquor. Before a hotel or restaurant can start serving alcohol, it should make sure to be awarded this licence before the opening. If it is taking over an existing licensed establishment, an assignment of this licence to the new owner should be approved. Once the hotel or restaurant have its liquor licence, it is responsible for every client and must ensure that their staff that serve liquor is trained in Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) to comply with the General Code of Practice for Liquor. ... their lives otherwise. 3. What are the greatest problems of social media for individuals and society? Some of the greatest problems of social media sites is the same problem as it is real life. Cyber bulling is a harsh reality to all social media sites, this can come in the form of rumor starting or people bashing. Just because one involves a keyboard and an internet connection doesn’t make it any less dramatic to the victim of bullying. This can go for business as well, a group of people can destroy a reputation of a company or a product and have it wiped off the map. There are some groups of people who bash other individuals and companies in their spare time, just because their tired of the quiet on whatever site they belong to. 4. How have modern social media sites affected commerce? Include positive and negative examples in your answer. The positive side of using social media to help with commerce is free advertisement and getting the word out about new products through individual members of the website. For instance the site Facebook runs ads on a members home page that connect to whatever the member may have posted as a status, such as products or movie titles or Facebook groups that are for or against a certain person, product, movie, etc. The negative side of this is some individuals may pass negative word around about a movie or a product that could end up the product being dropped or pulled from the shelves. This could happen anyway, but it seems...
