HMD 253 Throughout my process of deciding which college to attend, I looked at various reasons why and why not to attend at certain universities. The dining commons, the professors, the level of the school, requirements, majors, etc. were all reasons that I took into consideration in picking the school that I wanted to attend. I decided to go to UNLV for the reason that it was in state and it would be cheaper for me and to be part of their Hospitality program. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Harrah Hotel College is one of the best schools in the United States for hospitality for many reasons; however, it also has its negatives. I have been part of the Harrah Hotel College for 3 years and I have had tremendous experiences and disappointing ones as well. I completely understand that all schools have problems and can’t always be perfect, but there are problems with UNLV and its hotel college that aren’t tolerable. Aside from the negatives throughout the hotel college, it definitely also has its positive, which makes it one of the top schools for hospitality. One of the negatives that I feel like the Hotel College has is the amount of requirements that one has to complete in order to graduate. Aside from all our core classes, every hotel student also has to complete an internship, which also requires for you to a class with it and also 1000 hours work experience apart from the internship. The hotel college is the only school on campus that requires us to complete both requirements. Not only is it the only school that does this, but the amount of hours that we have to complete are outrages. I have talked with friends throughout UNLV with different majors and they tell us how bad we have with all the requirements we have to complete. I definitely understand what the college is trying to do, they want us to gain...

...The Laws and Acts of Human Resources There are many laws and acts in human resources. In the following paragraphs I will define and explain each one. I will also choose two that I believe are most important and explain why I chose them. The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed in to law on July 26, 1990 and it prohibits discrimination and guarantees equal opportunity and access for all persons with disabilities. There are five titles included in this act. The first title requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for applicants and employees with disabilities and prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in all parts of employment. The other titles cover areas such as public services, public accommodations and telecommunications. The Family Medical Leave Act is a law that provides employees with up to 12 weeks of unpaid and job-protected leave from their job. There are times when employees must take time off such as for the birth of a newborn, care of a newborn, adoption of a child etc,. Under The Family Medical Leave Act the employer is required to give an employee their exact job or a similar job as they had prior to leave. The pay and benefits are also required to be the same. Age discrimination is when an applicant or employee is treated differently because of their age....

...Purpose and principles: Multinational companies recognize that human resources play an important role in developing and sustaining a competitive advantage in today’s highly competitive global business environment. As a result, Multinational companies increasingly use expatriates on short-term and long-term international job assignments for a variety of purposes, such as to acquire and transfer knowledge, to manage a foreign subsidiary, to fill a staffing need, to maintain communication, coordination, and control between subsidiaries and corporate headquarters, and to develop global leadership competence. Given this, successful expatriate assignments are indispensable to Multinational companies for both developmental and functional reasons. Training: An expatriate’s success in the host country is largely determined by his or her cross-cultural adjustment to the host country. While immersed in the new culture, expatriates are ‘removed from the comfortable environment of their parental culture and placed in a less familiar culture’ and are susceptible to adjustment problems because of numerous challenges that inhibit their cross-cultural adjustment like the need to speak the foreign language, to cope with culture shock, to understand different laws and customs, and to interact with local nationals....

...10/27/2010 Human Resources Management Teacher: Student: Extra Credit Exam #2. Discussion question#1 page 172. The essential elements of forecasting the supply of and demand for human resources have a number of ingredients. According to our text, one important ingredient is the organization’s own strategic plans regarding anticipated growth, stability, or decline of the need for human resources. Demand trends also influence forecasting. Information about what kinds of people will be in demand as well as the kind of potential employee availability when making staffing decisions. The information related to demand and availability can help to build a diverse organization and serve as a set of constraints on what management can accomplish to meet organizational goals. Discussion question #1 page 205. An organization can temporarily increase the size of their workforce in a number of ways. The organization can outsource work or production to vendors which would increase their potential workforce by the use of outside labor resources.
