Reflection In Human Services

...It's been a year (or three semesters) since I started my human services journey. Like any student entering into the program, I was nervous, anxious, and self-doubting myself in making the right choice in majoring human services. A year before coming to California State University, Dominguez Hills, I was debating on whether to continue my intentions of majoring in psychology from the prerequisites I've accumulated or to switch with social work. This was in addition in not only going back to school, but also going to a university level school for the first time. That was a few semesters ago and personally, I'm not the same person when I set foot onto this school and into the human services program. The first semester was only a warm-up as it...

Reflection In Human Services

...As I have been reading the chapters of out text book and the online lectures from this class it continues to increase my understanding in human service professional. Being in this field I will need to be able to work with different kinds of clients from different cultures. As I have noticed that I tend to get this question in everywhere I go “where are you from”. This question comes as soon as I start a conversation since they hear I have an accent. Some people like it and others tend to think since I talk different than them I can’t help them or they lower their self-esteem towards me .I experience this when I was at college when I was the only person from who was not an American and the students didn’t want to get associated with me since they thought I had nothing to offer but as soon as the students started seeing my high grades they wanted to be in study discussion with me and wanted to be associated with me more....

I've been able to sort of reshape what I've learned from other people into my true beliefs, seeing as though I don’t necessarily...

...Allen Covington HUM 201-001 Prof. C. Lincoln Self-Reflection Essay Introduction Self-reflection has been defined in a number of ways, but for the purpose of this thesis I will use it in a contemplative manner, toward the end of, relating how my experiences; ‘could affect my career as a Social Worker’. This self-reflection paper is personal. It shares the impact that HUM 201 has had on me, and my understanding of; what will be expected of me as a person and professional. As I understand the goals of the essay, it is to have someone consider and think about future uses of this knowledge being acquired. As part of my preparation for this paper, I looked back on the course from the beginning of the semester. I looked at my goals as a future educator in the field of ‘Human Services’, and thought about how this semester has changed my perspective (this coming from someone not unfamiliar with human services) on what it takes, to truly be effective as a leader in the field of social work as a result of this course. Through this self-reflection I’ve noticed the inter-play between my personal knowledge and what is being taught, the ‘role’ of ‘social worker’ first came to my attention at a very young, I lived in a family constantly in need of social services. The most striking realization I came away with is, the sway the psychological and sociological perspectives relate to each other (in very complex ways), more than you’d acknowledge without serious training to ferret out...

Crucial information presented includes: 1. Introductory materials on Reflection by Diane Hedin and Dan Conrad 2. Reflective teaching techniques using eleven different forms of reflection rather than just using journals and asking how participants feel about service 3. Basic critical thinking skills that may be used in reflection sessions 4. Bibliography Reflection Reflective learning techniques are not the lone providence of service activities. All thinking and dialogue requires some form of reflection if learning is to take place. Individuals need time and reconsideration of events to put facts and ideas into sequence and eventually into a better understanding as to what happened during a specific event. Everyone in their life-time will be required to repeat this process endlessly. Nevertheless, schools do little...

Professionalism

...Human services refers to a variety of delivery systems such as social welfare services, education, mental health services, and other forms of healthcare. Human services professionals may provide services directly to clients or help clients access services. Human services professionals also manage agencies that provide these services. And because of their engagement with human conditions, they are involved in policy development and advocacy. The academic discipline of human services educates these professionals at the associate, bachelor's, and graduate levels and studies how delivery systems and public policies affect service users. The history of human services as an academic discipline[edit] Human services has its roots in charitable activities of religious and civic organizations that date back to the Colonial period. However, the academic discipline of human services did not start until the 1960s. At that time, a group of college academics started the new human services movement and began to promote the adoption of a new ideology about human service delivery and professionalism among traditional helping disciplines.[2] The movement's major goal was to make service delivery more efficient, effective, and humane. The other goals dealt with the reeducation of traditional helping professionals to have a greater appreciation of the individual as a whole person and to be accountable to the communities they serve. Furthermore, professionals would learn to take responsibility at...

...scheduling of the course and required readings. Course objectives: International institutions have come to play an increasingly important role in global politics in the last century. Arguably the most prominent of these institutions is the United Nations (UN). Established in 1945 and in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, the UN’s Charter set out the rights and obligations of Member States, and pledged to: “save succeeding generations from the scourges of war”; “reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights”; promote “respect for the obligations arising from treaties”; and “promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom”. A brief review of the state of the international system 70 years later, however, has led many to conclude that the UN is incapable of realizing its Charter ideals, and that the organization itself, and the very promise of global governance, is irrelevant. Indeed, challenges in peace and security, development and human rights have repeatedly underlined...
