HIV/AIDS
I chose to do my human services needs assessment on this topic because I have had family members to succumb to this deadly disease. I’ve seen how this disease can destroy the victims and the lives of their families. HIV/AIDS is at the very top of the epidemic list. After initially being afraid of people with the disease, I gained knowledge then particularly took a special interest in this population. I have a heart of compassion for those that are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. This disease is mean, cruel, heartless, barbaric, brutal and vicious in every dreadful way. The HIV/AIDS virus has love for no one. And it does not discriminate against sex, age, race, or the financial state of its victims. What drives me is wanting to be in a position to help the victims of this savage disease. This disease literally sucks the life out of its victims. And with the AIDS victims knowing that they have a human service worker (me) at their side that’s willing to cry, laugh, help, fight, love and support them though this ring of terror, is all I want to be able to. The love that I have for people that hurt and suffer as much as this people do is another driving force for me. Working with HIV/AIDS victims is one of my future goals. I just want to be able to provide my clients that support that they want and need. Being able to make my clients and their families feel special and loved and not that they are just another case or statistic, is my ultimate goal.
Problems of that Population
There are several problems that affect those in this population. One of the problems is that it can take up to six weeks before the disease is detected. Most people with HIV show little to no signs or symptoms. And even with all of the publicized education and campaigning, lots of people are still having unprotected sex. Which means HIV/AIDS will continue to run rampant to the potential victims in our world. Taking care of AIDS patients has become increasingly expensive because: * The victim becomes a patient and needs services of different specialists because the disease affects different parts of the body such as: cancer, heart disease and pneumonia. * The medications are expensive, and can sometimes have side-effects that need extra medical care. * The illness can cause the victims to be in and out of the hospital, which can sometimes be lengthy stays. Sometimes the illness becomes stable then other times it becomes unstable. And when it’s unstable that’s when all of the different hospital visits and additional treatments come into play (Strauss, Fagerhaugh, Suczek, & Weiner, 1991).
Organizations and Support
CDC(Center for Disease Control) is a national organization that gives out information around the country. They also provide: counseling for AIDS victims, their families and those that are at risk; assists with locations that provide medical, dental and other health programs; transportation to doctor’s appointments; and assist with housing. The role of the human service worker is to help the patient to navigate through some of the complex issues in public assistance while making sure they meet the requirements necessary for the assistance such as having the proper paperwork, social security cards, and birth certificate. The worker also helps them with community- based programs that help with the basic necessities such as food and shelter, apply for disabilities and food stamps or a meal program. While the victim/patient is still new to the situation, the worker gently guides them through each step in a caring, professional and compassionate way. He/she can help set up counseling for the victim and his/her family.
Conclusion
Every HIV/AIDS victim has at least eight close relatives or friends. This means we all have been affected by the HIV/AIDS virus one way and or another. This is why there is also added support for family and friends as well as the victim. Being educated on this population and some of the things the victims, their families and friends endure can and will hopefully deter potential victims away from unprotected sex and drugs. I hope to one day be able to help the victims and families that are in need of these sevices.

Human Services

...Human Services Human service workers and human service assistants play a variety of roles in the medical field to include social workers, social service assistants, case managers, case manager assistants, alcohol drug abuse counselors, mental health aides, community outreach workers, life skill counselors and gerontology aides. All of these positions require a unique person who is dedicated to helping others with flexibility and high ethical standards. The human service area that I plan to concentrate on is a social service assistant and life skill counselor. I would work with clients with a variety of challenges to help them to be self sufficient and confident, to the best of their ability, as positive contributors of society. As a social service assistant and life skill counselor I plan to provide direct and indirect client services. While a client works towards self sufficiency, they may need assistance including food stamps, Medicaid, welfare and other human service programs. My clients are responsible for bringing my payroll records, tax returns, social security cards for themselves and family members, rent receipts, utility bills and additional records that may apply. I use this information to determine their eligibility for programs that are available to them and their family members. For single parents, I submit their income and expenses to see if they qualify for child care assistance so that they can work and return to school. I am also able to determine eligibility...

What Is Human Services?

...University of phoenix | What is Human Services? | | | Tina CooperBSHS/302 | 11/21/2010Kristie Hilton | | What is Human Services? Everyone at some point in their lives needs help. This help could range from help with their bills to help with adequate shelter or even help with everyday living skills. No matter what the reason is for the help, it is an inevitable that people need it. In these times of need, people may wonder who they can turn to for help. This question often goes unanswered because people are so unsure. Rest assured, however, that Human Services is here to help. People just need to know where to look and even how to look for this help. Goal of Human Services According to the National Organization for Human Services, the field is broadly defined (2009). There are so many goals of the Human Services field that it is hard to define just one. The main thing that human service workers strive for, however, is the commitment that they make to service populations. This commitment is one to improve the overall quality of life to the populations that they serve (National Organization for Human Services, 2009). There can also be different goals for different types of human service workers. Depending on the setting of the workplace, these goals can range from teaching a basic living skill to a consumer to finding the help that someone needs, such as job assistance or even helping with finding funding for a higher education. All of these things would...

Human Services Clients

...Client Paper Amanda Ramon BSHS/305 February 11, 2013 Karen Miner Client Paper Human Services mean many things to many different people. If you break the wording down then it is explained by the serving or being a servant of humans or the human race. It is important for us to always remember that being a servant or serving someone is a very honorable career to dedicate your life to. Serving others in many religious doctrines is an honor and these people are praised for being servants to others, service minded people are not normally selfish and they commonly have wonderful characteristics that make them especially good at human services. Clients on the other hand are in need of the servant or service that people in human services provide. They both go hand in hand for the simple reason if you didn’t one you wouldn’t have the other. Service people need people to provide services too and clients need service people to provide them the services, each role has responsibilities and also has issues that come along with being in the role that you have chosen. There is a large range of problems that face clients in this evolving world of issues that seem to be growing larger and more complex as we evolve into the technological world. The illustration I like to refer to most is the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs that show a pyramid style of needs that start with the basic needs and at the top of the pyramid is the needs that are satisfied when all other needs are met. The variety...

...Boundaries Paper In any type of a profession field it’s always in the best interest that the person helping to always maintain a professional interest relationship between the helper and one who is receiving the help. Professional boundaries need to be established among the client and the caseworker, those boundaries are the spaces between the caseworker’s power and the client’s vulnerability. The power that a caseworker has among many clients is that they have access to private knowledge about the client and the client’s need for care. When boundaries are established from the beginning a case is open it allows for the relationship between the client and caseworker to be a more safe interaction and meet the client’s needs. As a professional caseworker it is important to not mislead the client. The caseworker should always recognize what the client’s vulnerable state of mind, might be misinterpret by professional care vs. personal care provided by the caseworker. Certain types of gestures, verbal expression, or special treatments are types of repeated boundary crossing that should be avoided at all times. Violations of boundaries are those “simple” misinterpretations and confusion between the needs of the client and the caseworker. When the case is no longer about the client’s best interest but rather when the caseworker begins to express personal disclosure, privacy is no longer being respected between either of the party. “Professional sexual misconduct is one of the most...

...Individual Assignment: ‘What is Human Services’ Paper By: April Chapman February 15, 2011 The goals of the human services are vary many, but most of all they work with people to help them with their lives. There are many different things they can do to help. There is one place a person can go to get help with there children to learn a better way of life with them and this is called children and youth. Children and youth are there to help children that are in need they are there to help stop children abuse. There are many groups that work with people and try to help make life a little better for everyone. The goal is to help people in need and sometimes this is harder then it sounds. They help with food, shelter and clothing to need families. There is so much that a human service worker can do to help all a person has to do is ask for help. The workers go out everyday and try to help people that need it the most but lately this help is hard to find. There are not as many people willing to help someone that is in need. If a family has a house fire and they loss everything, do they know where to go to get help dose anyone know where to go. There are some thing I think that need to be more in the open, like where these places are and how to get help. But the workers can only do what the laws allow them to do. There are up to 300 programs out there to help people in need. Human service started when the needs of people were not...

Models Within Human Services

...# Models within Human Services # Models within Human Services Walden University Tammy Arm PSYCH2010-10 “All of the three models (Medical, Public Health, and Human Services) are used to deliver services today; some agencies may prefer one over the others, and one model may be more effective than the other two in certain situations.” (Woodside & McClam, 2011, p. 108) The two models that I feel would be best suited in my career choice would be the Public Health Model and the Human Services Model. The Public Health Model differs from the Medical Model in ways of the recipients of the services and methodologies of treatment. While the Medical Model focuses on the individual, the Public Health Model focuses more so on groups in the population. “The Public Health Model treats the individual client, while it also emphasizes preventing the problem through supporting activities such as the use of films, speakers, school programs, and pamphlets, all aimed at educating the population about the problem.” (Woodside & McClam, 2011, p. 109) This model views mental disorders as a result of the pressures or disorder within society or environment, and it is evaluated in its effect not only on the person but on the general public as well. The way in which I see this model assisting me in my career choice as a Human Service Worker/Assistant, is being able to assess such clients that may have mental disorders or issues such as panic attacks that can leave a...

The Human Factor in Service Design

...Artwork by Dieter Braun o p e r a t i o n s p r a c t i c e The human factor in service design John DeVine, Shyam Lal, and Michael Zea Focus on the human side of customer service to make it psychologically savvy, economically sound, and easier to scale. Poor customer service isn’t a headache just for consumers; it’s a problem that vexes senior managers too. Balancing the trade-offs between the cost of services and the customer experience benefits they provide is difficult. Ensuring that frontline workers can efficiently and consistently execute service offerings across a far-flung organization is harder still. Along the way, many com- panies lose sight of what makes human beings tick—for instance, by overlooking well-known principles of behavioral science when delivering services—and thus unwittingly predispose customers to dissatisfaction. At the same time, the customer service landscape is changing as social media and new mobilephone technologies give com- 2 panies unprecedented access to data on customer interactions, while the technologies are changing the nature of the interactions themselves—for example, by amplifying the speed and impact of customer complaints. 1 How human is our service? Three questions Against this backdrop, some organizations are making strides in the design and delivery of services. By focusing more thoughtfully on the human side of customer service, these companies are lowering costs by 10 percent or more while improving...

...Integration and Generic Approach to Human Services Name College Human Services The field of Human Services is broadly defined, uniquely approaching the objective of meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing on prevention as well as remediation of problems, and maintaining commitment to improving the overall quality of life to service populations. The Human service profession is one which promotes improved service delivery systems by addressing not only the quality of direct services, but also by seeking to improve accessibility, accountability, and coordination among professionals and agencies in service delivery. Integration In the last decade, greater coordination and integration of human service programs have been addressed through legislation, local innovations made possible by radical changes in welfare administration, and pilot studies taken with private foundation support, often with gains being small in scale and out of reach. Implementation and sustainability claims are attributed to “politics” or “personality conflicts” with administration, but researchers search more systematic causes focusing on organizations, technology, or resources. One way to understand systematic impediments to integration is to analyze work context of the front line. This can be hard to do in the human service industry where the “raw materials’ are human beings. This type of setting requires formalized rules and regulations, but generally can...
