Humanities

...Humanities and Its Value Many times when a person is asked about humanities he may not know exactly what the teacher is asking. “Humanities?” the student may think without realizing how profound and useful it is within the world. Humanities can include many different studies upon the world, in its most general description it is a complete study of human ideas and expressions with emphasis on both developing techniques and skills for studying art, as well as learning about actual artistic creations. Stanley Fish whom argued that Humanities is merely not a tool but a whole category of its own that is taught is most likely hitting the nail on the head. Intriguingly enough, Humanities is useful in its own way of studies of our interpretations through art, music and other categories of historic pieces. For example, throughout the world people may look at a piece and start interpreting it, while referring to its historic features such as the work of Yun Gee’s painting, the Lone Ranger. The lone Ranger is a painting in which has a historic value which refers to the time period where Chinese were migrating towards the U.S. during the time of the gold rush. They were merely looked down upon as workers because of how they looked and acted. Through the use of humanities people may look at this painting and come up with ideas, “Why did Yun Gee decide to paint this man the way that he did?” “What was the reason for the color in the background and the setting that it has taken place in...

Humanities Today

...The collection of disciplines referred to as the Humanities are a broad set of academic principles essentially defined as “anything that isn’t an empirical science.” This includes the classics, languages, law, history, performing arts, literature, religion, philosophy, and visual arts. Some disciplines, such as anthropology and linguistics, are considered to be a part of both the humanities and the sciences (Anissimov, 2010). On September 29, 1965, the Senate and House of Representatives enacted the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act of 1965 to promote progress and scholarship in the humanities and the arts in the United States as well as for other purposes (National Endowment for the Humanities, 2010). The purpose of this paper is to define the term humanities, distinguish the humanities from other modes of human inquiry and expression, and give an example of some of the humanities and explain why each example reflects current developments in politics, socioeconomics, and technology. In the Middle Ages, studies not centered on God were referred to as part of the humanities; therefore, early sciences and mathematics were part of the humanities. Today the sciences are completely separate and are divided into two main categories: Social sciences and natural sciences. Humanities differentiates itself from present-day sciences by following a non- scientific approach in that the scientific mode of inquiry, where the goal is to establish validated theories and scientific...

Defining the Humanities

...Defining the Humanities University of Phoenix Tara Brigham HUM/100 Introduction to the Humanities Professor Marilyn Olander June 27, 2011 Humanities can be defined as human characteristics or different branches of learning. Humanities have affected every culture. One cultural event that I have experienced and I have seen how humanities have changed it over the years is music. Music that is made and played has evolved as humans have evolved over the years. The first music was made during the Middle Ages. The first two types or styles of music were monophonic and polyphonic. The Renaissance period came next and changed the way music was created and perceived. The Baroque period came after the Renaissance period. During the Baroque period composers experimented with different styles and instruments. Classical music came from the Baroque period. Classical music allowed the composer to tell a story or express his or her feelings through the music. The Romantic period was next. Composers experimented with different instruments including wind instruments. The music was more dramatic than any other time period. After the Romantic period came the 20th century. Music in the 20th century allowed the composer and artist to use technology to enhance the compositions. And now in the we have different styles and types of music because of the humanistic of music. We have country, rap, rhythm & blues, soul, gospel just to name a few...

Humanities Today

...The humanities can be described as the study of how people process and document the human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world. These modes of expression have become some of the subjects that traditionally fall under the humanities umbrella. Knowledge of these records of human experience gives us the opportunity to feel a sense of connection to those who have come before us, as well as to our contemporaries. Humanities influence daily life deprived of several people being conscious of their attendance. What differentiates humanities from other styles of human review and appearance is that they emphasize on philosophies and standards, not only the creation or consequence of an act. It seems as if society has become entirely dependent on visible consumption and leisure and is being denied of how we truly evolved into the existence of today. The lessons that we learn throughout our lives are taught so that we can learn about the creation of humanity. Cultures throughout the world have been molded by historical events. Art offers our culture with a unique image that is custom-made towards our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and freedom of expression. Modern museums were the first place for revealing such works of art, but now there is a constant effort to try to compete with the vast production of computers and the internet. Without human inquiry and expression, there...

Defining and Experiencing the Humanities

...Defining and Experiencing the Humanities Tim Williams HUM/100 July 22, 2014 Dierdre Finnegan Defining and Experiencing the Humanities I define Humanities as simply how we as humans live, think, love, communicate, and why we do it the way we do it. We can trace our cultural history for insight about whom and why we are, and why we intertwine the humanities within our modern lives. In this paper, I will provide a first-hand account of my experience attending the Zulu Ball in New Orleans on February 2, 2014. It was a lackluster experience that left me and my guests less than impressed. Nonetheless, the evening was clearly a lesson in our humanities. Please read on as I attempt to convey why I think this is so. First thing…Traffic! The very thought of traffic makes me cringe. I was aware of our destination and its proximity to downtown New Orleans. I was also aware that there would be at least a moderate delay when attempting to access the major arteries that connect the east side of this great city to the west side. In anticipation, my guests and I departed my residence in what we thought was ample time to compensate for possible traffic issues. Unfortunately, this was not the case. We arrived at our destination after almost three hours of bumper to bumper, snail’s pace commuting. Needless to say, the evening was already off to a bad start. Upon arrival, things continued to decline. Mind you, this was a black tie catered affair. However, when we arrived...

Science vs. Humanities

...Science vs. Humanities They say old habits die hard. Society is full of prejudice wherever anyone looks, and many have to struggle constantly to fit in. There are plenty of things that may be signaled out from society for giving space to criticism and segregation. One of these conceptions regards the arts and humanities. People struggle with different kinds of prejudice every day, and one of the most widespread preconceptions is that people who study science are smarter or more "intelligent" than people who go for the arts. In general, it is essential to know about history and literature, since it is a very important part of what humankind is now. History talks about the evolution of men and even contributes to an important part of economics or international relationships. It is essential to know about the allies of a country and the relationships with other countries when it comes to commerce. Literature gives an insight to the complete thoughts of a culture, a greater understanding of diversity in mankind and the collective thoughts of it. It is quite ironic the situation held now a days, since in the highest "classes" it is expected, if not an obligation, to be well educated in the arts and culture in general. Ironically, many of these people are the CEO's of big companies, which work with mathematics, statistics and calculus, and whose carreer was based on science. Of course, we may not generalize, but it is taken as a fact that it is harder in the field of humanities to find...

Chinese Literature: a Lens for the Humanities

...the Humanities Although the humanities are often a subject of bitter debate in school today, when the most important thing seems to be to acquire marketable skills, many people acknowledge the importance of the humanities to education and the world overall. Yet, too often, when people discuss the salient features of the humanities, they narrowly and overly focus on the Western traditions. However, many important characteristics of the humanities can be found in the Eastern tradition as well, and in Chinese literature in particular. This essay discusses how some common Chinese stories exemplify vital aspects of the humanities and consequently increase our understanding of culture. First, what are the humanities? According to Stanford University, “The humanities can be described as the study of the myriad ways in which people, from every period of history and from every corner of the globe, process and document the human experience. Since humans have been able, we have used philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language to understand and record our world” (Stanford University). Often, humanities classes focus on these topics – yet all too often, students learn a narrow view of the humanities, one that seems to assume the world began in Greece and ended in America. Although people often viciously criticize the humanities, since the correlation between studying them and earning a big paycheck is a difficult logical leap for some people, the humanities are...
