Hungering for America

Rendering on a large collection of bases, Hasia Diner's Hungering for America "explores how the memories of hunger and the realities of American plenty merged together to shape the ethnic identities of millions of American women and men from Italy, Ireland, and Jewish Eastern Europe" (p. xvii). Sensitive to the physical and the existing predicament of hungry people, Diner strengthens our understanding of the influence of American abundance on immigrants by arguing that culturally specific memories of the European past determined Italian, Irish and Jewish food ways in the U.S. In this essay I will discuss how the European Jewish immigrants and the Italian immigrants dealt with the issue of identity formation. For the Italians food was a significant factor in strengthening ethnic identity and community in the United States because to them food was very significant. Family and food play a large role in Italian life. Diner says, “The matrix of food family-sanctity served as an Italian peasant ideal, in part because it is so often lay beyond the grasp of the poor.” (p. 35). In other words, even the poor people of Italy found the appreciation of food to be a very important part of Italian culture. When the Italian immigrants entered America they impacted communities in the United States by the way of food. The most prominent Italian food is macaroni. Many macaroni factories were opened in America and represented the Italian culture. America changed Italian culture because the food was much cheaper in America. Italians were eating the food they considered sacred everyday, compared to rarely being able to afford to eat it back in Italy. In the book Diner says, “What had functioned historically as a sacred system that held Jews together and separated them from non-Jews took a different turn in America.” (p. 180). In other words, the religious beliefs that Jews followed in Europe were not being followed anymore since food is less scarce and inexpensive. In America standards of the Jewish religion, kashruth, separated rather than brought together Jewish families due to the new founded dietary practices in America such as, “cake for breakfast.”(p. 180). Food from Eastern European Jews was significant in strengthening ethnic identity and community in the United States because of their specific religious dietary restrictions. With more and more Eastern European Jews coming to the United States it led to a change in advertising for many companies such as Coca-Cola who began to advertise to the Yiddish press. At first it was very odd to see what the Jews were eating, but as they became more popular America adjusted the changes and eventually ended up profiting from the Jewish style of eating. In conclusion, food created a sense of identity for both genuine Italians and Italian Americans. Although Italian immigrants embraced many traditional American foods, they still were proud to claim them as their own. Food helped form communities for Italian Americans in the 20th century as it still continues to do so in present day America. Unlike Italians, the Eastern European Jews did not develop a culture of culinary reminiscence. The Jews came to America to live, unlike the Italians who most likely eventually went back to where they came from. This being so, they most likely adapted to the new ways of eating in America rather than worshiping their old ways.

...average, bloody Spanish rule...from which we have rescued them?” (Doc B). In other words, is comparing the Filipinos to children that needed their protection because they were not stable enough to be on their own. Even the President of the United States, William McKinley, believed that the Filipinos were not ready to govern themselves, “We could not leave them to themselves—they were unfit for self-government—and they would soon have anarchy and misrule over there worse than Spain’s was” (Doc C). In other words, it was the United States duty to educate and civilize the Philippine. This was the most common sense to keep the Philippines. Another reason to annex the Philippines is there are colonizing countries nearby that could grab them if America left. Other countries such as Germany or France could have easily taken because of the lack of government in the Philippines or would have been easily taken again by Spain. Germany and other countries like, it then had a chance to expand their empires even more. According to William McKinley, “We could not turn them over to France and Germany- our commercial rivals in the Orient- that would be bad business and discreditable” (Doc C). Furthermore, if the Philippines were not ready to govern themselves, it would have been unwise to let them fall into the hands of a country that would treat them badly or the competition of the United States. Another reason is that the United States wanted some type of power. Other countries like Germany or...

Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality

...Biological And Humanistic Approaches To Personality Personality has long been thought to be existent at birth and can only attempt to grow from the moment of conception. According to Maslow, an American psychologist, human needs are sought to be fulfilled and upon fulfillment, lead to self-actualization. He created a hierachy of needs that dictates what human desires are necessary to be achieved before being able to move toward the next stage in life. Abraham Maslow is the creator of Maslow’s hierachy of needs, a psycological theory that said all humans have a need to reach their max potential. But to achieve this sense of self-fulfillment one must meet every need starting with the most basic first. The hierachy consists of different levels. From the bottom: physiological, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. Physiological needs consist of food, water, sleep, shelter, warmth, and even sex. These needs can be influenced by where you live, what area, what region, and in what kind of an establishment. Food consumed can depict some parts of personality. Heritage and how one is brought up can determine how you live your life. The basic needs are influenced by family culture and background. A lack of nuturing in the early stage can lead to insecurity issues. Safety needs consist of protection from nature, security, the law, and stability. It is the duty of the parents to protect their child from the outside world and the negative energy that can affect...

... When I read both these short stories , my initial thought was that these have Little in common. Wolfe’s story “Child by Tiger ‘ takes place in the early 20th Century , and so does Connell’s but the places where they are set are very different. Connell’s has an exotic locale and Wolfe’s in the backwoods of the United States Of America. Both stories contain manhunts complete with motivations for the hunts could not be more opposite . In “The Most Dangerous Game “ General Zaroff , the antagonist resorts to hunting humans for sport . He made this clear to the protagonist Rainsford when he said , “Hunting tigers ceased To interest me some years ago.” I have exhausted their possibilities. “No thrill left in tigers , no real threat , no real danger I live for danger “! “ He becomes an expert hunter and decides to hunt a more elevated quarry, one that can reason .. Humans. Hungering for the excitement he lives for , he hunts and hunts until he is Defeated. In Wolfe’s story the hunt is for a completely different reason , to stop Dick Prosser from killing. I also found another common thread wound in both stories racism . In “The Most Dangerous Game ‘ General Zaroff attempts to convince Rainsford to hunt with him...

Their lives will forever be affected by the sacrifices they’ve made and by what they’ve gone through. We salute them and call them “Heroes.” However, there are other casualties of war that we don’t hear about as often. They don’t receive the massive attention that is lavished on the others. There are generally no Purple Heart medals waiting for them and no one is lining up to shake their hands. As a matter of fact, we call them by a different name. We call them “Lucky”. The End Times

...------------------------------------------------- Prophecy in the Last Days Study by: Elder Abraham Juma ------------------------------------------------- True Prophet vs. False Prophet A prophet is anyone who bears the message of God and conveys it to others. The messages of God can never contradict one another. The Spirit that inspired the writers of the Bible inspires every true prophet, and brings to clear view the thoughts of God revealed in the Bible instead of contradicting it. Those who contradict the Bible are under the inspiration of another spirit. We call them false prophets. God’s thoughts in the Bible are complete and clear, without any contradictions. Though the thoughts of God were written in human language by human beings, they show a clear purpose of God’s love. Sometimes they appear to contradict, but if read ‘precept upon precept’ and ‘line upon line’, ‘hare a little and there a little’ all apparent contradiction is dissolved, and a perfect harmony seen. God’s word is perfect. Those who teach principles contradicting the Bible are not better than the Bible; they are actually being inspired by Satan. God cannot contradict His word; see the story of the prophet in 1Kings 13:1-28. God communicates through the Bible. If He must send a prophet, the prophet cannot contradict the Bible. Again I say, if he contradicts the Bible, he is a false prophet. God has not sent Him. Christ has a message to the world, and He puts His Spirit in a person who communicates...

Markting

...ADVERTISING'S FIFTEEN JIB FOWLES* BASIC APPEALS Emotional Appeals THE NATURE OF EFFECTIVE advertisements was recognized full well by the late media philosopher Marshall McLuhan . In his Understanding Media, the first sentence of the section on advertising reads, "The continuous pressure is to create ads more and more in the image of audience motives and desires ." By giving form to people's deep-lying desires, and picturing states of being that individuals privately yearn for, advertisers have the best chance of arresting attention and affecting communication . And that is the immediate goal of advertising : to tug at our psychological shirt sleeves and slow us down long enough for a word or two about whatever is being sold . We glance at a picture of a solitary rancher at work, and "Marlboro" slips into our minds . Advertisers (I'm using the term as a shorthand for both the products' manufacturers, who bring the ambition and money to the process, and the advertising agencies, who supply the know-how) are ever more compelled to invoke consumers' drives and longings ; this is the "continuous pressure" McLuhan refers to . Over the past century, the American marketplace has grown increasingly congested as more and more products have entered into the frenzied competition after the public's dollars. The economies of other nations are quieter than ours since the volume of goods being hawked does not so greatly exceed demand . In some economies, consumer wares...
