When people are forced to confront their life problems they have to face that problem head on and become a beast themselves. In the film “Beasts of the Southern Wild”, Hushpuppy, the six year old female protagonist, was hit with a storm. The storm representing the mythical beast known as the “Aurochs”, they became Hushpuppies reality turning her life upside down. Hushpuppy living in the 21st century lives differently than most city people. Hushpuppy lives in the outskirts of the city, separated from the city life, living in the unlivable bathtub. She lives with just her father, Wink. Wink, although he is crazy and an alcoholic, as a father Wink loves her daughter more than anything, willing to spend every moment with her even though he knows …show more content…
In order for beasts to survive they need to adapt to the environment, hunt and kill their prey. Hushpuppy is introduced to this idea of survival in the very beginning of the film from her teacher, Miss Bathsheba. In the beginning of the film there is a foreshadow where Miss Bathsheba said that everyone is “meat”. Miss Bathsheba presents the idea that people can’t be “pussies” or they will surely die. Then suddenly she talks about the Aurochs, the mythical beast that eats and triumphs over humans. When Hushpuppy kept have visions of the Aurochs it showed the audience that the Aurochs represented her and how she developed as a character throughout the film, but in the very start of the film she wasn’t a beast but “meat”. The director of the story leads the story to prepare Hushpuppy for the reality she was going to face when the storm hits and floods the Bathtub. Everyone who stayed and lived in the bathtub ideals are, “survival of the fittest”. Beasts ate other beasts that are weak to survive and that only the strong can survive.
