Poker Strategies for Business Leaders

...Useful Poker Strategies for Business Leaders by Aaron Jones In the movies Rounders Matt Damon’s character is a poker player and he comments: Fold or hang tough. Call or raise the bet. These are the decisions you make at the table. Sometimes the odds are stacked so clear there’s only one way to play it. Other times, like holding a small pair against two over cards, its six to five, or even money, either way. Then it’s all about the feel, what’s in your guts. (Cohen, 1998) Poker strategies can be useful tools for Executives and Managers in Business today. Business leaders have to be able to trust their instincts as they lead their corporations, departments, or teams. Many industries are rapidly changing and it’s imperative for leaders to be able to adapt. What makes some Executives successful while others are less successful? We see several companies and industries struggling while others seem to be thriving. Larry Bossidy, retired CEO of Honeywell, wrote: When companies fail to deliver on their promises, the most frequent explanation is that the CEO’s strategy was wrong. But the strategy itself is not often the cause. Strategies most often fail because they aren’t executed well. Things that are supposed to happen don’t happen. Either the organizations aren’t capable of making them happen, or the leaders of the business misjudged the challenges their companies face in the business environment or both. ...key leadership changes within the company. Revenue was up 10.5 percent for the third quarter versus the prior year period, due primarily to higher supply chain revenue from increased volumes and elevated commodity prices, specifically cheese, as well as increased sales of equipment and supplies. Additionally, sales and store growth contributed to increased revenue in all business segments. In turn, net income was up 16.3 percent for the third quarter, primarily driven by domestic and international same store sales growth and global store count growth, as well as increased supply chain volumes. “Great people, food, service, and technology have helped us deliver another strong quarter of global sales and profits,” says J. Patrick Doyle, Domino’s president and CEO. “Our franchisees continued to drive vigorous store growth worldwide and have embraced our ‘Pizza Theater’ store reimage program in neighborhoods around the world.” Domino’s domestic same store sales grew by 7.7 percent in comparison to the same quarter in 2013. Likewise, Domino’s international business grew 7.1 percent in same store sales. “We have been reporting positive sales since late 2009 when we introduced our new pizza recipe,” says Tim McIntyre, a Domino’s spokesman. “We’ve been driving a lot of our sales through significant quality changes.” McIntyre points to several recent innovations, including a mobile app that provides for easier ordering. “Between 40 and 45 percent of our orders today are...

Engl 131 Short Essay

...Elementary The television hit series “Elementary,” which airs on the CBS network, is a new series which takes on the old and famous “Sherlock Holmes” story and puts a modern contemporary twist to its storyline and characters. The most noticeable change in this new series is the casting for Sherlock Holmes’s age old apprentice, and almost side-kick, Dr. Joan Watson. In the works of the original text by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Watson is a male character that acts as Sherlock’s assistant in each of their investigations. Watson was commonly portrayed as the laughingstock in the older series of Sherlock Holmes (around the 1970s to 1990s reworking) in order to reflect the brilliance of Holmes. However, in the new series “Elementary,” a new twist is put onto the character of Watson as star Lucy Liu takes up the role in this version. Throughout the entire television series, we see that this new hit series not only brings about a modern twist to an age old story, but also challenges the ideologies and assumptions of ethnicity, female power/feminism, and occupational variety/opportunity for females in our current society. Having Lucy Liu star as Dr. Joan Watson not only challenges the role of feminism in our society, but also the role of ethnicity as the director introduces Watson as an Asian woman. Throughout American history, we see that the most famous fictional detectives are mostly, if not all, men. From children’s books and cartoon series such as Inspector Gadget and Batman, to adult...

The Speakled Band

...DR GRIMSBEY ROYLOTT / SHERLOCK HOMLES/ THE SPEACKLED BAND “The speckled band” is the title of this story written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is about Sherlock Holmes trying to solve a locked room mystery in Dr Grimesby Roylott’s house which is called Stoke Moran. Dr Grimsby is a money hungry freak who has no friends. Dr Grimesby Roylott has a fascinating past and we can deduce much from this. For example; “he spent time in India and that is where he met Helen’s and Julia’s mother and developed an interest in Indian animals.” Overall Dr Roylott has an obsession with Indian animals. Another point we can make about Dr Grimesby Roylott is that he is really muscular and creepy. This is proven by the following evidence; “seized the poker and bent it into a curve.” This quotation shows that he is an incredibly strong and scary man. Overall we could say that you would not like to mess with him. DR Grimesby Roylott is actually a very clever man. This is proven by the following evidence; “Dr Roylott planned out the room where Julia Stoner died, so a snake could go throw a ventilator, down a bell pull and into her bed so it could bite her. This quotation shows that he is smart by planning a head. Overall he is smart most of the time but a bit stupid at other times. There were a few red herrings in this story. One of them was the gipsies; “It must have been those wreched gipsies.” The other red herring was the Indian animals (the cheater and the baboon); “I...

Literary Review: Sherlock Holmes, a Master Detective's Mind at Work

...LITERARY REVIEW DRAFT Shaun P. Grech, WRTG 101, 30 November 2013 Thesis: Sherlock Holmes, a Master Detective’s Mind at Work Unquestionably, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was on to something when he created Sherlock Holmes. In Stanton O. Berg’s article, “Sherlock Holmes: Father of Scientific Crime and Detection,” the author believes that “the famous sleuth had a decided stimulating influence on the development of modern scientific crime detection” (446). Holmes was indeed a dramatic representation of the investigative curiosity of the time period. Berg cites criminologists of the era who were either inspired by Doyle’s fictional character, leading them to their own discoveries in forensic science, or who were driven to start implementing Holmesian methods within professional police forces (448). A review of Sherlock stories reveals that almost every one of the forensic techniques utilized by police forces today is touched upon in one form or another. In E.J. Wagner’s book The Science of Sherlock Holmes, such methods included the examination of dirt, cigar ashes, blood stains, fingerprints and a dabbling in ballistics among others. Part of the lure of Sherlock Holmes is that readers are captivated by the iconic nineteenth century detective’s innate abilities in solving his cases so seamlessly. In essence, he is the perfect intellectual model for analytical ability and razor edge wit. How then, is Holmes able to utilize the powers of his mind so well...

Compare And Contrast Gadget And Holmes

...Block Method- Holmes vs. Inspector Gadget Detectives around the world look up to characters in an effort to understand the art of uncovering a case. These characters reflect the characteristics of a good detective. Although the characters Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Gadget both find the solution to each of their cases, they differ completely in their intelligence, method of thinking, planning and comprehension skills, and ability to communicate and cooperate. Holmes uses his extremely high intelligence quotient and perceptiveness to expose the verdict in both difficult and easy cases. Unsurprisingly, his critical thinking and unbiased opinions lead him to the resolution of his cases. Holmes concludes that Mortimer lives as a young lad...

The Film Professor M.

...While there is a notion of “good and evil” in this film, it is done in a way that represents evil as an equal and opposite force. Sherlock’s counterpart and enemy in the film, Professor M. is more than just a crazy genius. He acts as the representation of “evil.” The constant bantering and “chess” game they play is an intriguing balance that I have yet to see in a film. Perhaps this has much to do with the way Doyle intended it to be. In most films the villain is portrayed as superior, but most of the time has an army of people on his side that do most of the dirty work for him. In this film Professor M. is a mastermind in the total sense of the word. He is always a step ahead of Sherlock. This stayed true to the story, which appealed to me...

The Greek Interpreter

...“The Greek Interpreter” In Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1893 story “The Greek Interpreter,” Doyle introduces Sherlock Holmes brother Mycroft Holmes to display Sherlock Holmes’s exceptional skill of observation and deduction to be more a result of his heredity than of his environment and early training. In the story Sherlock believes that his gifts are strongly attributed to his ancestry, Mycroft’s presence in “The Greek Interpreter,” validates Sherlock Holmes’ belief through similarities in their skill set and behavior. The display of Mycroft’s similar skills of deduction and observation to Sherlock prove that the unique skillset is a family trait and not an acquired skill. By displaying Sherlock’s skills as a hereditary trait, the author displays how rare and unique Sherlock’s talents are through Mycroft’s similarities to Sherlock. Mycroft’s presence also explains the inability of Dr. Watson to observe what Sherlock can in other stories even after years of closely working with Sherlock. This essay will prove that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle displays a belief that a person’s abilities are directly attributed to his or her heredity. Early in the story a discussion between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson takes place, in which the topic of, as stated in the story ,“how for any singular gift in an individual was due to his ancestry and how far to his own early training.” Dr. Watson believes Sherlock’s talents come from his own training. Sherlock agrees to some extent, but believes his...

Thematicessay

...There is one lesson that seems to be common in a lot of stories. A lesson about how to live your life and to learn to do things for yourself. This lesson I saw in many of the readings/films we read/watched in class, some examples include: Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, The Sign of the Four by Arthur Conan Doyle and, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. These stories are all very different but share that same lesson of putting matters into your own hands. Trust no one or you will be hurt or put into danger. In Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, you can’t trust the government. The government also known as The Party, watches it’s citizens and will vaporize anyone just for doing something as simple as having an individual thought. In any society you should be able to trust the government. Maybe not completely but enough to know you won’t be killed just for thinking. “For how could you establish even the most obvious fact when there existed no record outside your own memory” (Orwell 24)? This quote describes that the Party doesn’t keep records of the past, the records that are kept are constantly changed. People have so little memory of their past that Winston can’t even remember the beginning of the Party’s rule or his childhood. Another example about the government is even the children will turn you in for anything. The children are junior spies that could have you vaporized. “You’re a traitor!’ yelled the boy...

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Hound Of The Baskerville

...Sir Arthur Conan Doyle takes Mr. Holmes and Dr. Watson on yet another wild ride of murder, greed, and consequences in The Hound of the Baskervilles. They will test their limits and face their fears. Throughout the book, the theme of portrayed as a powerful motivator is explored by showing envy's great kick-backs in the character's painful repercussions. Due to Hugo Baskerville's uncontrollable greed, it cost him both him and his maiden's lives. This is heavily portrayed in the quote, "-to his captive. And so [Sir Hugo] found the cage [holding the kidnapped maiden] empty..." (8). When Sir Hugo kidnapped the maiden and let the hellhound loose to both find and kill her, it cost him both him and his maiden's lives. The hellhound killed Sir Hugo...
