Professional Development Plan

The three areas of interest I would like to pursue after graduation would be art therapy, poetry therapy, and hypnotherapy. The reason why I chose these distinct types of therapy is because I think they would be very interesting to learn and would be slightly different from the norm. I recall when I was in class one day and a classmate told me about her interest in equestrian therapy. Of course, at the time, I had no idea whatsoever what “equestrian therapy” was, so I decided to research it. I discovered that equestrian therapy is treatment that inquires activities with horses to promote physical and mental health. From that point, it dawned on me that it is more than one way of doing therapy besides just talking about problems and feelings, so I should explore more options.
The reason I chose to research art therapy after graduation is because I dated an art major student when I was in …show more content…
I always aspired of being a famous rapper, however, I always lacked the skill for it. Poetry therapy could be the closest thing possible now I can do besides rapping. I also heard that many females appreciate a good poetry piece, so I may be able to find another girlfriend to replace the art student. I have discovered that it is an organization that promote poetry therapy awareness, (it appears that there is an organization for almost anything now that I think about it). The organization is called The National Association for Poetry Therapy. The organization offers workshops and gatherings. The last workshop that is posted on their website is from February 25th. I believe that this organization either needs to update their website or host more workshops. However, they have books that educate someone on the matter of poetry therapy such as Giving Sorrow Words and The Healing Fountain. I think I will just read those two books instead of going to the

Design Psychology

...DESIGNING PSYCHOLOGISTS Designing Psychologists Hill Designing Psychologists This article about design psychology really interested me especially since I am fascinated with interior design and I am currently working towards getting my degree in this field. I especially wanted to do an essay on this subject because I realize that it would help me understand the needs of my future clients better if understood the connection between psychology and interior design. Design psychology is the practice of architecture, planning, and interior design in which psychology is the principal design tool. In an American Psychological Association online article written by Lea Winerman, called “Designing Psychologists,” Susan Painter, PhD, and Constance Forrest, PhD, co-owns their own design firm. In 1990, after becoming a psychology professor at Carlton University, Susan decided to pursue her interests in interior/environmental design at the University of California. Now Susan is an urban and campus planner where she can merge her psychology expertise into her interior/environmental design skills into a new field called design psychology. Susan and Constance also design smaller scale places like offices and private homes through their own firm, Forrest Painter Design, in Venice, California. According to Constance, who is a clinical psychologist, she says ”I think the unique contribution that design psychology makes to design is that it...

Role of the School Counsellor

...Divya Srivastava THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR School counselling is a branch of applied psychology that deals with problems or behaviours that interfere with the academic progress or social acceptance of children in the school system. School counsellors assess cognitive functioning and identify mental retardation, giftedness, developmental delays, instructional difficulties, and learning disabilities. They recommend educational programs; assess behavioural and emotional problems, and support parents and teachers. They also deal with the full spectrum of social problems including family violence, peer interactions, substance abuse, sexual abuse, neglect and the influences of these problems on school functioning. School counsellors act as a screening and referral resource for a wide range of medical, social, and emotional disorders that interfere with academic functioning. In general, school counsellors study behaviour, protect and promote mental health, and apply the principles of psychology to improve school adjustment and learning. Specific services, however, depend on the competencies of the school counsellor and the needs of the particular school system being served (Koe, 1991). For instance, the school where I was placed for my field-work had a school counsellor who also had to fulfil the role of a special educator and a remedial teacher as and when the need arose. School counsellors are employed for the purpose of providing specialized support for students with exceptional...

Consumer Culture Theory, Consumer Agency and the Importance of Brands

...Consumer Culture Theory, Consumer Agency and the Importance of Brands Summary of the Importance and Relevance of Topic Consumer Culture Theory (CCT) refers to the classification of a certain approach to studying consumers and the way that they consume. It was first coined in 2005 by Arnould and Thompson, and it specifically addresses the sociocultural, symbolic, experiential and ideological facets of consumption. Their work is the culmination of over a quarter century of research that treats consumer behaviour as a phenomenon worth studying. As we have come to develop the field of CCT, so too are we developing our understanding of the consumer, and the broader economy. The work of Arnould and Thompson has provided students of consumer behaviour with the necessary environment to debate, innovate and advance the field of study.1 CCT is important within the scope of consumer behaviour because it places a focus on meaning and identity creation; it delves deeper in the mentality that surrounds consumers in the marketplace, and an understanding of this mentality is useful to all that engage the market (buyers, sellers, producers, etc...). “CCT explores how consumers actively rework and transform symbolic meanings encodes in ads, brands, retail settings, or material goods to manifest their particular personal and social circumstances and lifestyle goals.”2 In understanding CCT, we understand the market in a broad sense, for example, acknowledging that marketing symbols are significant...

...THE NATURAL MYSTIC The Natural Mystic’s Marketing Plan Phelicia Alert Keller Graduate School of Business Marketing Management – MM522 Professor Glen Forbes 1.0 Executive Summary Several major trends are driving the growth of wellness as an industry. These trends not only directly impact the spa industry and its customers, but also are opening new opportunities for spas to play a leading role in a paradigm shift toward more proactive ways of taking care of ourselves (Pilzer). According to economist Paul Zane Pilzer, the wellness industry is new and is currently a $500 billion worth industry. Pilzer also predicted that 10 million millionaires will emerge from the wellness industry in the next 3 to 5 years (Pilzer 2001). The Natural Mystic’s marketing plan seeks to generate revenue from a target market of primarily customers over fifty years old called the Baby Boomers. Through its wellness center, The Natural Mystic will provide unique solution – orient programs geared towards a market segment of serenity and holistic wellness seekers. Boomers represent the most progressive group in terms of making the connection between good health and appearance. As a result, Boomers represent the prime target for “beauty from within” messages. 75 % of Baby Boomers believe the best years are ahead of them. In this vein, they are looking for solutions that cater to concerns like lack of energy, physical health, memory and emotional health (Nolen 2011). It may seem that Boomers...

Bulimai and Anorexia

...BULIMIA Definition: Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by binge eating and compensatory behaviors, such as self-induced vomiting, excessive exercise or misuse of laxatives, to prevent weight gain. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders lists the following diagnostic criteria for bulimia nervosa: * Recurrent episodes of binge eating (characterized by eating, in a discrete period of time, an amount of food that is definitely larger than most would eat in that period of time and/or in that situation, combined with a sense of lack of control of eating during the episode) * Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behaviors in order to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting; use of laxatives diuretics, enemas or other medications; fasting; or excessive exercise * The binge eating and compensatory behaviors both occur, on average, at least twice a week for three months * Self-evaluation is highly influenced by body shape and weight. * There are two subtypes of bulimia nervosa: purging and nonpurging types. A person with bulimia nervosa, purging type, regularly engages in self-induced vomiting or use of laxatives, diuretics or enemas. A person with bulimia nervosa, non-purging type, does not engage in purging behaviors (and instead uses other compensatory behaviors, such as fasting or excessive exercise). General Psychology

...field, a professional practitioner or researcher is called a psychologist, and can be classified as a social, behavioral, or cognitive scientist. Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the physiological and neurobiological processes that underlie certain cognitive functions and behaviors. Structuralism was the first school of psychology and focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components. Researchers tried to understand the basic elements of consciousness using a method known as introspection. Wilhelm Wundt, founder of the first psychology lab, was an advocate of this position and is often considered the founder of structuralism, despite the fact that it was his student, Edward B. Titchener who first coined the term to describe this school of thought. Functionalism formed as a reaction to the structuralism and was heavily influenced by the work of William James and the evolutionary theory of Charles Darwin. Functionalists sought to explain the mental processes in a more systematic and accurate manner. Rather than focusing on the elements of consciousness, functionalists focused on the purpose of consciousness and behavior. Functionalism also emphasized individual differences, which had a profound impact on education. While Wundt's work helped to establish psychology as a separate science and contributed methods to experimental psychology and Titchener development of structuralism...

Tell Me Your Dreams - by Sidney Sheldon

...Tell Me Your Dreams by Sidney Sheldon BOOK ONE CHAPTER ONE Someone was following her. She had read about stalkers, but they belonged in a different, violent world. She had no idea who it could be, who would want to harm her. She was trying desperately hard not to panic, but lately her sleep had been filled with unbearable nightmares, and she had awakened each morning with a feeling of impending doom. Perhaps it's all in my imagination, Ashley Patterson thought. I'm working too hard. I need a vacation. She turned to study herself in her bedroom mirror. She was looking at the image of a woman in her late twenties, neatly dressed, with patrician features, a slim figure and intelligent, anxious brown eyes. There was a quiet elegance about her, a subtle attractiveness. Her dark hair fell softly to her shoulders. I hate my looks, Ashley thought. I'm too thin. I must start eating more. She walked into the kitchen and began to fix breakfast, forcing her mind to forget about the frightening thing that was happening, and concentrating on preparing a fluffy omelette. She turned on the coffeemaker and put a slice of bread in the toaster. Ten minutes later, everything was ready. Ashley placed the dishes on the table and sat down. She picked up a fork, stared at the food for a moment, then shook her head in despair. Fear had taken away her appetite. This can't go on, she thought angrily. Whoever he is, I won't let him do this to me. I won't. Ashley glanced at her watch. It was time to leave...
