Modernization Theory
Background of the Theory
The idea of modernization is relatively new. Its basic principles can be derived from the Idea of Progress, which emerged in the 18th-century, Age of Enlightenment, with the idea that people themselves could develop and change their society. French philosopher Marquis de Condorcet was involved in the origins of the theory with the concept that technological advancements and economic changes can enable changes in moral and cultural values. Condorcet was the first to make the connection between economic and social development connection and that there can be continuous progress and improvement in human affairs. With that said, new advancements and improvements would need to keep pace with a constantly changing world. Furthermore, he encouraged technological processes to help give people further control over their environments, arguing that technological progress would eventually spur social progress.
In addition to social structure and the evolution of societies, the French sociologist Émile Durkheim developed the concept of functionalism, which stresses the interdependence of the institutions of a society and their interaction in maintaining cultural and social unity. His most famous work is The Division of Labour in Society, which described how social order was to be maintained in a society and how primitive societies might make the transition to more economically advanced industrial societies. Durkheim suggested that in a capitalist society, with a complex division of labour, economic regulation would be needed to maintain order. He stressed that the major transition from a primitive social order to a more advanced industrial society could...

This program recognizes that solid family ties can and does impact the success of the individuals under the criminal justice supervision, as well as their families. Various units offer family-inclusive programs and/or programs that are focused on the strengthening of parental and relational skills. These programs help the offenders maintain their constructive focus during their time of incarceration, allowing families to remain connected, which will in turn positively impact the future of their children (tdcj.state.tx.us). ...born with such as male/female or race. A person can also have an achieved status, which is a status that a person can change such as student, wife, or occupation. With each status that we hold, we also have roles to play. “A role is a set of expectations for people who occupy a given social position or status” (Witt 2011:105). For example, we expect teachers to be great with students and lawyers to know the law. Unfortunately, this is not always the truth. For the duration of this paper, I would like to share important ascribed and achieved statuses that I myself hold in society. Status and Roles Achieved Status and Corresponding Roles For the past seven years, I have been enlisted as a soldier in the United States Army. Not everybody can or even wants to be a soldier, but this is a position that I hold near and dear. I intend on making this a career by continuing to reenlist and not just decide to quit when an enlistment time frame is over. Currently as soldier, I am holding two...

Cartoons on Children

...“Cartoons on Children” As for the beginning, I would like to recall your childhood memories. When you were a kid, do you like to watch cartoons? Is anyone in this room interested in Dragon Ball or Sailor Moon? I still remember, when I was in primary school, the Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon will be on air every Saturday and Sunday, at 9 am. So today, I'm not going to talk further about dragon ball or Sailor Moon, but I want to share about the adverse effects of cartoons on children. Typically, children begin watching cartoons on television at an early age of six months, and by the age two or three years, children become excited viewers. This has become an acute problem because too many children are watching too much television and the shows that they are watching, even if they are cartoons, have become violent and addictive. Unfortunately, children watch the cartoons on television and they see material that is not appropriate for their age of group. The Children who watch too much cartoons on television are more likely to have behavioral problems, along with brain and eye injuries and increase risks in child safety. The first effect is behavioral problems. Some cartoons, even the main character in the cartoon show shows a bad behavior. They always watch the cartoons characters and trying to act like the cartoons. Not only the actions, but the children will also follow the behavior showed by the cartoons. Why am I saying this? It is because it has happened to my little cousin,......

Review

...Review Of the Movie “The Help” “The Help”, it is a movie based on the book which contain testimonials on the experiences of African-American maids. I remembered I read the book before I watched the movie. The thing I know about the book, it was written and published by a white woman and it was told by the black women who were maids in the 1960s. It gave me some assumptions to go with. Before I start, everything that I will bring up are tightly about the movie and the book. It is like a little summary however the reviews I read are really good concerning the movie and the book. The movie was produced in a small town Jackson, Mississippi. Racial tension was so high at that time. The Black women worked not only as maids in that town, but they practically raised white people’s children too. So far, they were seen as “HELP” and were treated inappropriately and poorly. Skeeter, is a young woman who were living in that town. She gets the idea to write a story about these women who were maids, because of her good experience with the black woman who raised her and took really good care of her when her mother was not around. I really liked and enjoyed this movie. It got my attention and made me cry couple of times while watching some parts. What was so interesting and good about this movie? At the beginning of the movie, the acting was excellent. Viola Davis who played a maid named (Aibileen), she is an amazing woman who was one of the central characters in the......

Fighting Fire with Fire

...Jett Stewart, (Nate) Song Comparison Music Appreciation- 105 The song that I chose to do a comparison of is called Fire. It was originally written, performed, and recorded by Jimi Hendrix in 1967 and is on the first album by his group The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The song is two minutes and 47 seconds of pure Psychedelic rock or acid rock, as some called it. The song originally is in duple meter. It starts off with a lot of drumming on a drum set then afterwards there are the sweet melodic psychedelic sounds of Jimi’s electric guitar and voice. After that, there is a catchy bass guitar groove that comes in during the first chorus and enters in and out while back-up singers sing, “Let me stand next to your fire ”as Jimi sings the whole song and is on lead electric guitar. There are crescendos that lead up to Jimi’s awesome guitar solos throughout the whole song. The mood of the song is happy. The bass line is legato and the lead guitar part is staccato. The song for the most part is homophonic and has parts that sound polyphonic because he is singing while playing lead guitar. The band that made a cover of Fire is an awesome band called Red Hot Chili Peppers. They are an alternative and influential funk rock group that was made Los Angeles, California in 1983. They covered the song on their fourth album called Mother’s Milk, which was released on August 16th in 1989. Their version of Fire sounds the same except they took it from moderato to allegro and had more......

...up in our big jackets from the cold weather outside, sitting by the fireplace, all looking like we just love each other, we are so glad to be around each other celebrating with each other, and it is so noticeable we all care for each other. We were so glad to just all be able to spend this day with each other. I remember this day so well. I look forward to this day every year! Christmas night is always celebrated at my Pawpaw’s house. My grandparents were divorced, so we always celebrate our Christmases separately. I love Christmas with my grandma, but I just cannot wait to go to my Pawpaw’s house that night! He always cooks the best meals. For a white man, he can cook a pretty mean Mexican dish of any kind. Mexican food is just part of the tradition! It would not be the same without it! Other than his awesome food, he always gives the best presents, of course. They may not even be the nicest gifts in the world, but they are all sentimental. We always get a box full of chocolate covered cherries and a pack of snickers. Now tell me who would not love that? Then he always throws in something for each grand kid that he knows can relate to them. Like myself for example, I love country music, so he always gets me a great country artists CD. Oh, and last but not least, we get the infamous “envelope”. We all know what is already in that little envelope, but we get so excited anyways and wait for it the whole night. All at once, all...

Or maybe a way to go into the world of anime or meet my favourite anime characters, or maybe I just need a computer with high internet connection, and I could also threaten to destroy the whole world. Then all the heroes from TV shows and anime could reveal themselves, and show the world that they exist, then they could all team up and try to save humanity, once I just get to see their faces, I would surrender, and live the rest of my insane life in prison, having the knowledge that they exist, and be happy and maybe, just maybe. Or I just want a computer. Back to the main idea for this chapter.. Okay, there’s more to Anime than Harem, 2D Animation, and Excitement, but those were the first three things that came to mind as I typed the content of this chapter. The Importance of Self Esteem in Child Development

...The Importance of Self-Esteem in Child Development Anastasia Jones Bakersfield College The Importance of Self-Esteem in Child Development Self-esteem is a vital part of a child’s development. The development of a positive self-concept or healthy self-esteem is extremely important to the happiness and success of children and teenagers (Child Development Institute, 1999). Self-esteem is how the individual sees themselves; an individual's perception of their own abilities. But it doesn’t stop at one’s self perception, the perception and expectations of important people in their life, e.g., caretakers also shape a child’s self esteem. A child’s self esteem changes at different ages. They will need different types of support in different stages in order for them to have a healthy self-esteem. Babies don’t have a sense of self yet, but you are able to start building it by answering to their cries, smiling and just being loving. This is letting the baby know that they are loved and develops a sense of security. They are secure because they know that there is someone who loves them and that they are apart of something, such as family, a group of friends, or some type of community. Without this a child won’t have a sense of belonging and feel rejected. This is why it’s important for a child to have a family, group, community, something that makes them feel accepted. We want children to feel accepted and have a sense of purpose so that they believe in themselves. When......

Emerging It Technologies

...tasks easier. It is also being used In Xbox 360’s kinect. This can become quite useful in the future. It is even being considered in the field of surgery – a very delicate field. In the movies, we can see Tony stark making hand gestures with his UI. It is awesome because the information is displayed right in front of him. He performs a lot of activities with his hands. Where could we apply this? I can imagine using this technology in manufacturing where small and delicate parts are inspected manually on some departments. Hand gesture could be used with a powerful camera and mechanical arms that allows the inspector to check very small equipment by having it displayed on a big screen, not through a device that looks like a microscope. And using his or her hand gestures, the camera and the mechanical arm can be controlled using hand gestures. That will simplify and make the job a lot easier. The inspection will be more accurate as well. 2. HoloVizio True 3D Display This technology uses no goggles. The displayed object depends on the viewer’s perspective. It is manufactured by Holografika and is available on the market. This could eliminate the need for 3d glasses in the future. Who could use this technology? I imagine the gaming industry. There are 3d games already released in PS3 like Batman: Arkham Asylum. However...

Ten Year Plan

...From the first moment I walked into this Positive Psychology class, I knew it would change something about me, for good. As a natural optimist, I was already expecting to have something good come out of this course that would affect my life, broaden my perspective, and somehow change something about my behavior. Little did I know that I would get so much more than just notes, lectures, and homework, I received some important tools for life that can help me in many situations. The five tools I incorporated into my life and do today are benefit finding, the nightly gratitude journal, and importance of flow in life, eudemonia, and the wonder drug. These important five tools that I picked up this semester result in an increase in happiness and so much more. Once of the first things that I remember really stuck out to me was, Professor Susan Thompson’s story of her life as a benefit finder and as a fault-finder. The difference was incredible and from that moment on I dedicated my life to transforming into a benefit-finder for all of life’s situations. I never considered myself as a fault-finder, but it always depended on the situation, now as a benefit-finder my life is open to more opportunities to learn, and move onto the future. For example, recently my little sister and I have been looking for a white Pomeranian breed puppy. Ever she was a little girl she wanted this puppy, and now as a fully employed part-time teen she has made it her job to find one. Together we have been......
