ICI: Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) was a British chemical company, taken over by a number of chemical companies, including Huntsman Corporation, a United States-based company, and AkzoNobel, a Dutch conglomerate, two of the largest chemical producers in the world. In its heyday, ICI was the largest manufacturing company in the British Empire, and commonly regarded as a "bellwether of the British economy".[1] It produced paints and speciality products (including ingredients for foods, specialty polymers, electronic materials, fragrances and flavours). It employed around 29,000 people and had a turnover of just over £4.8 billion in 2006. The company was independent from 1926 to 2008, headquartered for most of that time in Millbank, London, and was a constituent of the FT30 Index and FTSE 100 Index. After the January 2008 change of ownership, AkzoNobel fully integrated ICI's operations within its existing organisation.
ICI Pakistan ICI Pakistan Limited (Imperial Chemical Industries) is located in Karachi, Pakistan.ICI Pakistan was acquired by AkzoNobel on January 2008. It operates as an independent business unit within AkzoNobel and as a part of its specialty chemicals portfolio, known as Chemicals Pakistan. It was set up as a public limited company in Pakistan in 1952. ICI’s presence in this part of the world, however, predates the formation of the public limited company and indeed, Pakistan itself. The Khewra Soda Ash Company, a predecessor of ICI Pakistan Limited, set up a soda ash manufacturing facility in Khewra in 1944 with a capacity of 18,000 tonnes per annum. This facility was sited next to the salt range as rock salt and limestone; two key raw materials for manufacturing Soda ash were available here in abundance. ICI Pakistan operates diverse businesses and provides services to a number of diverse industries in Pakistan. To name a few, they are Textiles, Glass, Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture and Livestock, Construction, Automobiles, Chemicals, Cement, Fertilizer, Rubber, Detergents, Footwear, Food, Beverages and Leather, with back-end relationships in twenty three countries.
Businesses:
Today ICI Pakistan’s five businesses, Polyester, Soda Ash, Paints, Life Sciences and Chemicals manufacture and sell a range of industrial and consumer products. These include Polyester Staple Fibres, POY Chips, Light and Dense Soda Ash, Sodium bicarbonate, Paints for the Decorative, Automotive, Refinish segments, for Industrial use and Projects, Specialty Chemicals, Polyurethanes, and Adhesives and arranges manufacture, on a toll basis, of Pharmaceutical and Animal Health products. It also markets Seeds and in addition is engaged in trading in various specialized chemicals for use in industries in Pakistan. In 1995 ICI Pakistan Limited set up a USD 490 million PTA manufacturing facility at Port Qasim, near Karachi, which was commissioned in 1998. In 2001, the business was demerged to form Pakistan PTA Limited, a subsidiary of ICI Plc UK. ICI Pakistan is one of the largest quoted companies on the Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad Stock Exchanges with a paid up share capital of Rs 1.39 billion. The company has around 1,294 permanent employees and the same numbers of people provide services through contractual arrangements.
Polyester
ICI Pakistan pioneered Polyester Staple Fibre (PSF) technology in Pakistan through its investment in a 12,000 tonnes per annum PSF Plant commissioned in 1982 in Sheikhupura, near Lahore. Successive expansions and de-bottlenecking in the late 1980s, major expansion in 1996 and a recent Asset Modernization and Improvement Project in 2006, have ensured ICI Pakistan is one of the leading fibre suppliers in Pakistan.[citation needed]
Soda Ash While the Soda Ash plant dates back to 1929, commercial production began in 1944. Over the years the capacity of the plant has been increased through expansion in line with market demand. The total capacity of the plant today is 350,000 tons after commissioning of the 65ktpa expansion in 2009. In 1995, the business commissioned a 10ktpa plant for the manufacture of Sodium bicarbonate, which was further expanded to 20ktpa in 2004. Sodium Bicarbonate is a byproduct of Soda Ash. Besides, the business also produces dense ash (Na2CO3.H20), which is an essential raw material for glass making. ICI Pakistan’s Soda Ash Business caters to approximately 70% of the Country’s total Soda Ash requirement. The Business mainly uses indigenous raw materials and locally made equipment. The plant is located in Khewra, near the Salt range. Limestone, Salt & Water are essential raw materials for manufacturing of Soda Ash, all of which are easily available in the area. While coke and ammonia (Other two necessary raw materials) are purchased. To cut down the cost on the purchase of coke, originally imported from Poland, Soda Ash carried out an in house initiative of installing a Coke Briquetting Plant in 2011. The total project cost was 20 Million PKR. The plant is in operation since March 2011, and has significantly contributed to the overall profits of the business. Soda Ash also has the largest lime kiln in Pakistan that can burn about 1200 tons of Limestone in a day. Recent crisis of natural gas in the country has also affected the performance of Soda Ash. Unavailability of gas only allowed the business to run at 72 % of the maximum capacity in 2011. To cater for this, a coal-fired boiler project is underway, that is expected to be completed by June 2013. This will include two 45 tpd boilers that will use coal as fuel and a 3 MW steam turbine to generate electricity for the unit to run. Studies for this project are underway
Paints
The Paints Business in Pakistan operates in the Decorative, Industry and the Refinish segments. With the support of the International Business, the Business has commenced opening up new markets. Exports to Afghanistan have entered the fifth year; a position in the Iran OEM market with a view to developing a full-scale operation for all the three Businesses and exports of Refinish products into the Middle East market are all progressing well.
Life Sciences The Life Sciences Business consists of three divisions; Pharmaceuticals, Animal health and Seeds. The Pharmaceutical division having attained leadership positions in the Cardiovascular and Oncology Market has entered into the lucrative Anti-Infectives Segment. Animal Health Division being dominant in the livestock segment with an established brand equity, has plans in place to enter and become a major player in the Poultry segment. The Seeds Division having the distinction of being the market leader in the Sunflower market and Animal fodder markets plans to launch corn brands to tap this large market segment.
Chemicals
ICI Pakistan Chemicals Business consists of General Chemicals and Specialty Chemicals (formerly Uniqema). The General Chemicals Segment includes trading and polyurethanes and is involved in the import, manufacturing, sale and distribution of industrial chemicals. The trading segment comprises an extremely diversified portfolio of fourteen major product groupings with over 250 products/variants, including sixteen well-reputed trading partners such as National Starch & Chemicals, Huntsman Polyurethanes, Ineos Chlor, Nalco, Huntsman Tioxide, supplemented by imports of complementary product lines from companies in the USA, Europe and the Far East. This Segment markets a product range used for various applications by nearly every industry in Pakistan, prominent amongst which are power, cement, textiles, paints, pharmaceuticals, personal care, food & beverage, solvents, detergents, footwear and household appliances. The Specialty Chemicals Segment includes the manufacturing and marketing of textile auxiliaries, adhesives, paint lattices, emulsifiers, and the trading of specialized products to a wide range of industries. It has lately added a wide range of crop protection emulsifiers and is a pioneer in the local manufacturing of powder emulsifiers and its adhesives range is widely used in the construction industry. Specialty Chemicals has successfully established export business in Bahrain and Uzbekistan for its textile range, and is working towards further expanding its sales networks in the region. Corporate Social Responsibility The Company, over the years, has supported and encouraged social development initiatives, which include improving and enhancing infrastructure facilities in the health care and education sectors of the Country. The Company provides significant financial support to various institutes of excellence, all over the Country. Pursuing further the initiatives it supports the local institutions in and around Khewra, Sheikhupura, Lahore and Karachi where major operations and manufacturing sites of the Company are located.[citation needed]
Safety, Health & Environment The Company complies with National Environmental Quality Standards (NEQS) at all its manufacturing sites and has a health care programme for its employees. Effluent Treatment Plants have been constructed at the Company’s Paints Plant at Ferozpur Road, Lahore and at the Specialty Chemicals Plant at West Wharf, Karachi, which ensures that all liquid and solid releases from Plant sites comply with both NEQS and with Group policy requirement. Additionally, all gaseous emissions from plant sites are also treated to ensure compliance with NEQS. Demerger Process of AkzoNobel and ICI Pakistan: The management of ICI Pakistan has decided to restructure the company into two separate entities i.e. ICI Pakistan (consisting of non-paint businesses) and Akzo Nobel Pakistan (Paint business). Post restructuring Akzo Nobel will divest its 75% holding in ICI Pakistan to prospective buyers. An abrupt jump of approx. PKR3.7bn in assets of paint business during 2010 was due to segregation of accumulated cash to the respective businesses. However this arrangement is still subject to approval of Sindh High Court. Akzo Nobel, the parent company of ICI Pakistan (75% stake) has in principle decided to streamline its Pakistan business portfolio in line with its global business portfolio. For this purpose the management of ICI Pakistan has decided to reconstitute the company into two separate entities i.e. ICI Pakistan (consisting of non-paint businesses) and Akzo Nobel Pakistan (Paint business). Post demerger, Akzo Nobel will divest its 75% holding in ICI Pakistan to prospective buyers. According to the scheme, the share capital, capital and revenue reserves, unappropriated profits and losses are to be split between the non-paints and paints businesses on the basis of split ratio of 66.5:33.5 respectively, taking net asset method as primary valuation technique. Resultantly, the existing shareholders of ICI Pakistan will get approx. 66% of ICI Pakistan (ex-paint business) and approx. 34% of newly created Akzonobel Pakistan. Net asset valuation technique is used after considering tax treatments for post demerger ICI businesses.

Pakistani Culture

..."Do you think that Pakistan is a nation that has a national culture of its own? The passport I have says my nationality is Pakistani which clearly carries the implication that Pakistan is a nation. This essay deals with the question whether this nation has a national culture of its own. I however would first like to ask, if Pakistan is a nation in the first place. The difference between a nation and a state cannot be more clearly defined than by the situation of our country. A nation is a sociological and psychological phenomenon; it's a group of common people who share the same heritage, origin, history, language and culture. It is people who possess similar thinking and are unified by a sense of belonging. A state on the other hand is a legal term for administrative control over a piece of land. Pakistan can very well be defined as a state where hierarchy is present in the people and the status quo is clearly set. However, trying to fit Pakistan into a definition of a nation is, in my opinion, a daunting task. And since I think we Pakistanis are essentially not a nation, I also think that we do not have a national culture of our own. It is no secret that Pakistan is a land full of versatility and diversity in terms of both geography and ethnicity. Up north we have the cold mountains of the Himalayas and lush green valleys and hills around the province of KPK which is land of the Pashtuns. Coming down, we have the vast fertile plains of Punjab which are essential for our...

Nothing

...and elsewhere. And the U.S. normally does not carry out ground operations inside Pakistan without collaboration with Pakistani intelligence. But this mission was too important and too secretive.” (Huffington Post, 2011) Pakistan and the United States have been allies throughout the war on terror. Pakistan has provided troops along with convoy routes for quick resupply to coalition forces in Afghanistan. Many say that the United States has bought these routes through their yearly multi-billion dollar aid to Pakistan. Others say that the United States will use force and step on or over anyone that gets in its way. More and more of the general US public believe and voice that Pakistanis are simply pulling the wool over the United States’ eyes by providing training grounds to terrorist cells. Pakistan is as much a problem as is al-Qaeda. But are Pakistani-US relations strained? Many will lead you to believe that it is or that there is simply no relationship, only a puppet and its master. Throughout this paper and by using the one example above, I will examine the relationship between the two countries along with the United States’ use of power to forward a supposedly common objective. Many would believe that relations between Pakistan and the United States are all but gone. As one of the United States’ major allies in the Middle East, Pakistan has been questionable for quite some time. Pakistan has shown more than once...

Reluctant Fundamentalist

...Who is the reluctant fundamentalist? “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” is a tale of where two different cultures clash. The novel is told through the point of view of a Pakistani by the name of “Changez”, who has a cross-culture love who speaks with a complete stranger (American). But ultimately the question that arises when one reads this book is who the reluctant fundamentalist is? The most obvious answer is “Changez” is he really the only one? To determine whether or not Changez is a fundamentalist, one must decipher his past and consider his changes since. But strangely enough for a book with the title, “reluctant fundamentalist” Changez mainly refers to the fundamentals of finance, his time in America, his elite training at Princeton and employment at the company Underwood Samson. At Princeton, Changez was an overseas student who worked harder than the majority of others due to his “hunger” for greatness. After Princeton he joins Underwood Samson in the hope to become an acceptable, high-class American. Underwood Samson is based on meritocracy that doesn’t changes its ways. The culture of Underwood Samson forces the people to work to the best of their abilities and ignore anything else- merit is all that matters, forcing one to become an economic fundamentalist- whether you like it or not, live with it or quit. The corporate world that Changez once desired required him to wear a suit and shave to fit in. In Erica’s sphere, he must prove his worth by mentioning both Princeton...

Nussarwanjee

...RELOCATION OF NUSSERWANJEE BUILDING It used to be in the heart of old Karachi, but now the Nusserwanjee Building stands not far from Karachi’s sea edge. This is the miracle of South Asia’s very first building-relocation project. One can’t but marvel at the idea that this century-old stone structure, which is in two blocks of three and four storeys with large halls and high ceilings, is at the campus of the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture. The very first step in the relocation effort was through documentation of the building, which was carried out by detailed measured drawings and photographs. Then, considering the seismic zone of Karachi and the fact that the soil stratum at the new site near the sea was a reclaimed sandy beach as opposed to the firm land at the original location, some special measures were introduced. The decision to introduce iron columns was an innovative one as these now support the floor slabs for all four floors, including the mezzanine. Detailed identification of all the material was done and each stone, piece of timber etc., properly marked prior to the dismantling which commenced in April 1995, stone by stone, piece by piece, and completed within three months. The procedure involved the careful removal of each piece of timber and stone which was then tagged permanently for identification, carried to the ground floor, stacked temporarily, loaded on the trucks for transportation to the Clifton site, unloaded and re-arranged according to a...

...BOOK REVIEW | LOSING THE BATTLE AGAINST ISLAMIC RADICALISM | | Raghav Sharma Research Intern, IPCS Descent into Chaos: How the War against Islamic Extremism is Being Lost in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Central Asia Ahmed RashidPenguin Books, 2008Pages: lviii+ 484 Price: Rs. 495  | |   | The timing and the title of the Ahmed Rashid's latest book could not have been more appropriate. It comes at a critical juncture as the US shifts into election mode marked by politically-charged debates over its policies on the so-called war on terror and as much of South and Central Asia appear to be sliding dangerously down the path of anarchy. Rashid's work makes for a gripping read, his meticulous attention to detail, familiarity with the political and ethnic complexities, credentials as a journalist par excellence having covered the region extensively for 25 years and his access to key political players across the spectrum lend weight to his work. The author makes a stinging critique of the failure of the policies followed by the international community at large and the US in particular in addressing issues pertaining to social stagnation and state failure in the region that have been vital in fuelling the rise of extremism. While he rightly criticizes the Clinton administration's fire and ice policies in dealing with the rising extremist tide, it is the Bush administration he castigates most strongly for its ham-handed approach. This approach, he says was primarily responsible...

...Discuss the success of United States’ strategy in Afghanistan Shahaan Barlas Lahore School of Economics International Relations Mashal Shabbir April 9, 2012 Abstract This paper includes a brief discussion of the U.S strategies in Afghanistan and will then analyze that how successful was U.S in those strategies. The main objectives that were kept in mind by U.S while transferring its troops to Afghanistan are also discussed. The paper also concisely discusses the failure of the strategies undertaken by U.S and reasons for the failure. The paper also analyzes different aspects that left Afghanistan in a situation in which it cannot pursue without the help of another powerful country and also sheds light on the present situation of Afghanistan. The conclusion was drawn keeping in mind all the points, which were taken from credible sources, discussed in the paper. The paper includes several references to make the point more credible and clear to the reader. Success of U.S strategy in Afghanistan The American government was doubtful that even a stable and acceptable outcome in Afghanistan is possible. They believed that Afghanistan has never been managed effectively due to which it has become ungovernable. Much of today's public opposition to the war centers on the widespread fear that whatever the military outcome, there is no Afghan political end state that is both acceptable and achievable at a reasonable cost. Pakistan

...THE BEGINNING… Pakistan is home of some of the earliest human reaching back tens of thousands of years ago.  It’s only six decades ago that modern date Pakistan was established. Muslim religion was introduced to Pakistan area before it was established by Muslim traders in the 8th century. In the 19th century British took over the area that caused an all-India Muslim league to rise and try to fight the control of the British. After the Muslims were able to gain power in the 1930s formation was requested by the Muslims for independence. India and Pakistan were granted this formation by the United Kingdom in 1947. Pakistan was originally divided into two wings, east and west. It wasn’t till 1971 that the east wing was considered another nation called Bangladesh. Due to regional confrontations and domestic political upheavals never being resolved two wars were fought between India and Pakistan in 1947 and 1965 over territory. Since relations between India and Pakistan have been rough, but both countries are trying to make amends. Other struggles Pakistan has faced is very early in its development they had lost several prime ministers that set a course of political instability in the country. They have since had a number of political elections that were no successful till General Pervez Mushrraf became Chief Executive of Pakistan in 1999.
