Reflecting on Richard Rodriguez 1. Yes, I do agree that the problems of adaptation for minority immigrants are as difficult as those for Native Americans and African Americans. I believe that once you have grown in a place called home and move to a different place where you do not know the language nor the culture it could be difficult. When you are minor you have no choice but to follow your parents. In my personal experience I moved to this country because my dad is an engineer and he had prepared a better future for my brothers and I, even though I had spent my childhood in Mexico, it was where I wanted to be. Now I call this nation my home since I have lived more years here nevertheless my roots as a Mexican will always be present. 2. The historical connection between Puerto Ricans and Mexican Americans is that they became Americans by default as part of the goods in big time real estate deals or as some of the spoils of the war. I do not believe this is valid since there has always been immigrants who become citizens in different forms. I became a citizen because of my dad’s job I do not believe that every Mexican American or Puerto Ricans have that connection. It would be valid if he gave statistics or a deep research about this connection. 3. Yes it is typical that they could get confused with your identity or your language and I have experienced those comments where they ask where I am from when they hear my accent as I speak. When I am with friends we make jokes that only people from our culture understand and I believe this is in every culture. 4. Yes I believe that Villanueva could be hypersensitive otherwise he would not have written this article informing about immigrants. I do believe there is a way to deal with this issue, and just like he said friends help by making jokes or giving their opinion by having real facts or simply by

Essay on Rand's Ideas

...Activity 3.4 - Essay on Rand's Ideas Using "The Ethics of Emergencies" by Ayn Rand (pp. 215-218), develop an essay between 2 to 3 pages discussing her ideas in today's moral environment. Provide one other reference in addition to our text. The Ethics of Emergencies describes how some people base their ethical principles on emergency situations. The classic example is the lifeboat scenario. The scenario is that what if you are stuck on a lifeboat with some other people, and there's not enough water for everyone to survive the trip to shore. In order to live, you have to sacrifice someone else. The lesson of the scenario is that you have to choose between your life and the life of another person. There is a fundamental disharmony of interests, and it is to kill or be killed. Which means in life, you are either a murderer, you are a victim, or you can sacrifice your life for other people. The problem is that these ethics-derived-from-emergencies are anti-contextual. It is not true that there is a disharmony of interests and we do not have to choose between killing and dying in day to day life. We do not have to choose between sacrificing ourselves to others or others to ourselves. So abstracting general principles from these situations is a really bad idea. By trying to use these situations as a representation of real life, it actually becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you accept that life is full of conflicts of interest, you will act accordingly and create conflicts where...

Essay on Rand's Ideas

...Essay on Rand’s Ideas Ayn Rand states in her essay that there is an alternative between being either an altruist, who will sacrifice their lives for complete strangers, and being cold egoist who would not lift a finger to help anyone. Ayn developed a theory which known as Objectivism, which means that those that follow that will only pursue their own happiness and will only sacrifice themselves for those they love or hold interest in. She states that just because one is not willing to sacrifice their life for a complete stranger, it does not mean that they are cold and self centered, only that they hold more respect for their own lives or those of the ones they love. Rand’s ideas on Objectivism may not have fit very well in to the moral world we live in today. For example, take our military service member’s, if they were not altruists, who would defend our country in these times of war. If everyone only fended for themselves and for their own happiness, who would join the military. Our service members risk their lives every day, especially during this war on terrorism, they are sacrificing themselves for perfect strangers. If they were not altruistic individuals, how else would our country stay safe. Ayn Rand and her followers believed that the military draft was not right and went against individual rights. In the “In the lecture, “The Wreckage of the Consensus,” Rand specifically argues against withdrawal from Vietnam, calling it an act of “appeasement”: To continue...

Revolutionary Idea Of Freedom Essay

...The most revolutionary idea by far is that of personal freedoms and liberty. Before the enlightenment few individuals had ever thought of such a bold idea as freedom. Before great minds like John Locke, Baron de Montesquieu, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and Voltaire having undeniable rights seemed virtually impossible. Before societies like that of the Greeks and Romans, revolutionaries like Thomas Jefferson, Simon Bolivar, James Madison, Thomas Paine, George Washington and Maximilien Robespierre would not have been able to design functioning constitutions for their perspective countries. Without Freedom we today would not have the choice of what school to attend, where to work, and who we associate ourselves with. Not only has the idea behind liberty, freedom, and rights made a huge difference in the world, it has led to more individualized ideas such as abolitionism and civil rights. Without these ideas where would be as a global society? Without the idea of protecting the freedom of ourselves and others Hitler would have never been conquered, the Jews never been freed, Africans Americans never been given the right to vote and...

Basic Ideas to 40 Mark Essay

...How effective are back bench MP's? The idea that back bencher MP's are'nt effective has been widely debated. A back bencher MP is an Member of Parliament that doesn't have any status in the cabinet office but still can speak freely in Parliament. One reason that back bench MP's are effective is the power of Select Committees. Due to the 2010 reforms, back bencher's were able to be elected as a select committee chairman which enabled them to feel responsible and have status. It also gave them oppotunity to hold government to account. Now select comitties hold high reputation for scrutinizing government as their efforts have been widely recognised. An example of this is in 2012 George Osborne put forward a 'Pasty - Tax' in his annual budget. This would mean taxing all hot baked goods. The Treasury Select Comittie, led by Andrew Tyrie, scrutinised this tax and becasue of that, George Osborne scrapped the inital plan, which shows the effectivness of back bench MP's/ However one reason that select comitties are not effective for backbench MP's is that they do not hold any presitgious powers. Thy=ey cannot dismiss any ministers and they also cannot defy their whip given to them. So because currently 361 conservative MP's there is a higher chance that a Conservative MP will be chairman of a select comittie, therefore there will be less scrutinsing as an MP cannot defy the whip. Another reason back bench MP's are effective is the legasitive function of Parliament. This function...

Essay on Political Economy of Work - Discussing Taylor's Ideas on Scientific Management

...Essay in Political Economy of Work Do Taylor’s ideas on scientific management have any application in the contemporary workplace? Discuss with reference to evidence and alternative insights. Why for example do so many banks, health providers, and other companies ask you to key in your account number “for faster service,” when you will be asked to repeat it twice more to the people who are serving you? That is a symptom of Taylorism run rampant, a misplaced faith in technology unjustified by human experience. (Weisbord 2011: 12) The nature of work and its organization has interested managers, economists and social scientists for as long as people have been employed by others to engage in productive activity. Indeed, managers have largely been interested in maximizing output from available resources. Economists and social scientists have raised questions about the organization of work in relation to issues of the individual and society in general. Historically, the emphasis was on finding the best way in which to manage the human resource through scientific and mechanical means. Frederick Taylor (“Taylorism”) and Henry Ford (“Fordism”) were both looking to make labour more efficient by fitting workers to jobs. To counteract the some of the worst features of Taylorism, the job redesign and human relations movements stressed the importance of an understanding of employees’ social, rather than simply economic, needs. ...

What Role Did Enlightenment Ideas Play In The Development Of Government Essay

...What role did Enlightenment ideas play in the development of the United States? Give at least two examples to support your answer. The Constitution uses the ideas from the philosophers in the Enlightenment era. Two examples of this are John Locke’s ideas on securing the rights of life, liberty and property and Montesquieu’s ideas on the separation of powers as well as checks and balances. How are the ideas of the Magna Carta evident in the founding documents of the US? The ideas of the Magna Carta are expressed that not one person should have total and complete power. Our founding fathers decided to limit the powers of the branches of the government by creating a system in which one branch has a sure-fire way of checking a different branch. For example, any bill cannot be a law without first passing through both houses of congress and then signed by the President. Also, the Supreme Court may rule laws unconstitutional and remove them for good. The legislative branch may also impeach President's and elected officials. The final way we have used the checks and balances system is that all nominations to a position such as US Cabinet must go through the Senate....

Select Two of the Five Categories in the Following Question and Write an Essay Elaborating Their Develoipment: How Did American (America in This Case Meaning the United States of America) Ideas About Race, Class, Gender,

...The two concepts of race and class developed together and were tangled through the history, so I think they could be elaborated together in the following essay. So how did the idea about race and class form and develop? The answer could be found starting from the colonial period. In the colonial period, Europeans tried to establish settlements in Florida, the Northeast area bordering Canada, the Virginia colony, and the Southwest. By the 1600s, English colonists had established a system of indentured servitude that included both Europeans and Africans. Soon after, the slave labor system replaced the indentured working labor systems and gradually became rooted in the society. Due to the relationship between white owners and black slaves, the social hierarchy based on the race emerged naturally. Of course, white had the superiority and the black were attached tags of inferiority. The other race is the Native Americans. They were aboriginal people on the land of America. Although they developed good relationship with the first colonists, the conflicts between the Natives and the white Americans over the land issue could never be peacefully solved. Because the natives were outdated in their weapons so they lost their land to the white Americans. At that time, the absolute force meant the dominant power. The natives had to give in, and hence they became subordinates instead of the owner of the land. The most obvious point was the Indian Removal Act. Though it raised a lot of controversy...

In Order to Write a Persuasive Essay, You Need to Come Up with a Few Arguments in Favor of Your Point. Here Are Some Potential Arguments for This Idea: It Makes the Children Feel Equally Loved by Both Parents. It Is Not

...Assume Equal Responsibility In Raising Children Children And Young People Essay Naturally, family is made up of mother, father, and children. Children are supposed to be raised by both parents, and we all accept that father and mother have vital roles in upbringing their children into potential and useful people to contribute to social development. However, it is quite challenging if we want to compare whether mother or father is more important. What if mother is more important, is she has to assume more responsibility, or what if father is, ought he to assume more? On my point of view, in no account should parents assume unequal responsibility due to children development sake, the difficulty of raising children, and family happiness. Whether or not children are nurtured with equal responsibility from mother and father has effect on children’s development throughout their lives. With both cares, children get full experience of live from both mother and father because what father can give to children is different from that of the mother, but it doesn’t mean one is less important than the other. Mother can teach children how to cook, how to sew, or how to deal with household chore while father can teach them how to fish, to be strong, or to protect oneself from any danger. And some circumstances children need advice from father and other circumstances, only mother is more suitable to give advice. On top of that it is also known that with both parents care, children benefit...

...What Does a Good Essay Need? • An academic essay aims to persuade readers of an idea based on evidence. • An academic essay should answer a question or task. • It should have an argument. • It should try to present or discuss something: develop a ‘thesis’ or a set of closely related points - by reasoning and evidence. • An academic essay should include relevant examples, supporting evidence and information from academic texts or credible sources. 1. Starting Your Essay Although there are some basic steps to writing an assignment, essay writing is not a linear process. You might work through the different stages a number of times in the course of writing an essay. For example, you may go back to the reading and notetaking stage if you find another useful text, or perhaps to reread to locate specific information. Start work early You can’t write a successful essay unless you give yourself enough time to read, research, think and write. Don’t procrastinate or leave it until the last minute; start as early as possible. Define the question and analyse the task Writing down everything you know about a topic is not enough to make a good academic essay. Analysing, then answering the essay’s question or task is central. • Be sure that you understand exactly what the question requires you to do. • Identify the key words (like discuss or analyse) and clarify the approach you are required to take.
