If someone was to ask you, what do you identify yourself as, what would you say? Would you say you are American, foreign, black, and white, etc.? In my opinion, being an American is only half of my identity. I Identify myself as a young, strong African American woman striving to make it in this stereotypical, unfair nation we call a country. Being an American means to come together as one, a “melting pot” and being proud of your country, or patriotism. Although I am an American, I am also a young African American girl who is not only considered a minority, but also trying to keep up with this ever changing, corrupt society. Being an American means coming together and taking pride in your country. Some describe our country as a melting pot; others would beg to differ, considering how different our country is as far as cultures and ethnicities. We may be one as a country physically, but mentally we are not. Mentally, we all see ourselves differently through our cultures and ethnicities. Different cultures come to America every day from across the globe. People, who are very close to their culture or religions, will only associate with those who have the same beliefs as them. For example, if someone practices Christianity, they would separate themselves, or refrain from associating with those who are atheists. This is only because Christians feel that they should only associate with those who are Christians as well, this is speaking from observation and experience. When I attend church, every Sunday, most of the friends I make at church only hang out with the Christians at their school, or those who have a close connection with God, so they can have someone to turn to when they need advice or when they need prayer. All in all, we should all come together and equal as one. We need to understand

Personal Essay: The Role Of Identity Fraud In The United States

...In 2013 an article in CNN Money estimated that identity fraud occurs every two seconds. Identity fraud is a serious problem that claims millions of innocent victims. Our identity is what makes us unique. In 2013 my purse was stolen while I was volunteering at a local private school. The thieves falsely presented themselves as me, using my driver’s license and social security number to diminish my entire bank account in less than 2 hours. Thousands of my dollars, my entire life savings, had been stolen. I worked years to save money and become financially independent, and in 2 hours that was all ripped away from me. Identity is the “distinguishing character or personality of an individual”. When one’s name, address, social security, credit history, and life’s savings are stolen one feels violated. I struggled to reclaim my name and my self-worth. I wanted –I needed- my lives earnings and savings back. I did not have a penny to my name. Simple things I took for granted, paying rent, utilities, and buying groceries were now impossible. My credit score dropped overnight, my loans began to default, and I began the process of trying to clear my name and restore my identity....

...supposed to be English, but the English we were always wogs and nigs and Pakis and the rest of it”. Write an essay exploring how Kureishi’s novel maps Englishness as a contested terrain of identities, politics and performance. Your discussion should refer to Stuart Hall’s work on ethnicities and on Judith Butler’s writing on performance as identity. Much of the Kureishi’s early work is grounded primarily in racial and cultural conflict between British mainstream culture and ethnic minority communities; the conflict between the cultural claims that the first-generation immigrants were prone to clinging onto and the sense of belonging, which they their children aspired to develop in mainstream British society. To the children of immigrants, particularly those who had migrated from British Commonwealth or ex-colonized countries, any reflection on Britain, or their parents’ homeland, in terms of “home” may differ significantly from that perceived by their parents. As a writer born and bred in Britain of a Pakistani father and an English mother, Kureishi reflects upon his own identity, affirming in an interview his own sense of identity be seeing himself as British: “Critics have written that I’m caught between two cultures. I’m not. I’m British; I’ve made it in England. It’s my father who’s caught. He can’t make it. Elsewhere he proclaims his British identity in a similar way: I’m British, as wrote in The Rainbow Sign. Just like Karim in the Buddha. But being British...

Essay On Canadian Identity

...What is your understanding of a Canadian Identity? When you first entered Canada and now, has it changed? Canadian Identity is someone that can be identified as a Canadian. To be a Canadian there are different ways that you could identify yourself as a Canadian whether as an immigrant who became a citizen or Canadian born. Before I came in here I was expected to be a citizen as I was a “highly skilled worker” and entered here with my Public Relations, and came knowing already that Canada was the best place to live in the world, not America. I came with high expectations and with the mindset of living a better life which of course we are all living now. So in a recall, identity gives you the rights as a citizen and causes national pride for...

My Cultural Identity By Elme Trumbull And Maria Ponco

...My Cultural Identity I have never took my cultural identity into consideration before this essay. I've learned that cultural identity is what you believe and the way you live your life. My cultural identity could be related to the informational text “What is Cultural Identity?” by Elise Trumbull and Maria Pacheco. Which talked about defying the words cultural identity. Also the personal essay “ Two Kinds” by Amy Tan that has also taught me about my cultural identity in comparison with other people. With that in mind, parts of my cultural include my love of music, my passion for sports, and my obsession for spicy food. The instrumentation of music is what I connect to most. Toiletries

...Understanding Consumption in Context Why am I obsessed with the consumption of toiletries and personal grooming products? It was September ‘08 when I first came to the UK. I remember walking down the high street. I had to buy basic care, so someone suggested that I go to the Boots store. It wasn’t that easy because when I entered the store I was surprised to see the huge collection of healthcare and grooming products. I was extremely excited. Just like a kid in a candy store I went around the store more than twice. There was something in all the sections that seemed like as if were made especially for me. Eventually, I ended up purchasing a lot more than I wanted in the first place. This was just a beginning, now that I know, to what has become my obsession to use these grooming and healthcare products. Shopping for healthcare and grooming products in India is a completely different experience to what it is in the United Kingdom. There are not any dedicated stores for healthcare products such as Boots, Super Drug. The differences in such consumption patterns can be better understood through the concept of Sociohistoric Patterning of Consumption, which suggests that the institutional and social structures systematically influence consumption, such as class, community, ethnicity, and gender. I had never seen, until then, a store with such collection of healthcare products. It was a totally new experience for me. Maybe it was also...

Cloning & Individualism

...Results May Vary: Adam Phillips’s Theory of Cloning and The Paradoxical Apotheosis of Individualism Adam Phillips’s essay “Sameness Is All” takes the form of a dialogue with two children to introduce the fantasy of cloning in which everyone is identical. Specifically, Phillips observes that cloning is a “denial of difference and dependence” which leads to a “refusal of need” (92). However, Phillip remains mindful that such fantasy of physical or psychological sameness is implausible as everyone is different - even clones. One then questions the significance of such wanting of sameness, or if the sense of sameness serves any purpose. Using the concept of Self and Other that Joanne Finkelstein examines in “The Self as Sign,” I propose that the sense of sameness that is offered by the illusion of cloning allows one to establish a sense of identity. In a final analysis, I will elaborate on Finkelstein’s arguments on the Self and Other to shed light on the question posed by Philips on whether cloning was the death or apotheosis of individualism, and suggest that cloning has the paradoxical outcome of reinforcing individualism even as one seeks uniformity. Cloning is supposed to lead to conformity and uniformity, the absolute sameness. Phillips argues that cloning is appealing to society because it seems to represent a cure for “the terrors and delights of competition” (90-91). What is interesting, however, is the eventual admission by Phillips that this...

...P1- Discuss factors which may affect the development of self- esteem. This essay will be discussing factors which may affect the development of self- esteem. The main topics that will be looked at are, the growth promoting climate, the looking glass self, self-actualisation, ego identity and constructing of self. . Carl Rogers’ person-centred approach to change and understanding personality and human relationships is focused on demonstrating the conditions required for enabling a growth-promoting climate and the tendency, creativity and empowerment of people to achieve their highest potential. The approach provides the conditions for a growth-promoting climate, a relationship that enables people to discover the capacity to use it for growth and change, it is a relationship that doesn’t position itself from a perspective of “how can I treat or cure, fix or change this person?”, instead from a place of “how can I provide a relationship which this person may use for their own individual growth?”. (PCA York’s 2006) The looking-glass self is a social psychological concept, created by Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, stating that a person's self grows out of society's interpersonal interactions and the perceptions of others. The term refers to people shaping their self-concepts based on their understanding of how others perceive them. Cooley clarified that society is an interweaving and inter-working of mental selves. There are three main components of the looking-glass self which...
