IDEO
Strengths
* Globally reputed design firm, which has won lots of awards and accolades to show for its competency in proving solutions. * Innovation driven firm, which consists of employees from wide ranges of background, both culturally and technically. This helped to provide a diverse way for approaching a problem and coming up with its solution. People with different perspectives helped to modify and refine the solutions, which helped IDEO to provide innovations to wide ranges of services. * Structurally the firm’s management is flat, meaning that there is no hierarchy and bureaucracy within the project team. This helps everyone to feel essential to the team and contribute equally. * They give a lot of emphasis on trying to develop an insight to the actual problem clients are facing, which enables them to use general tools employed in those types of problems. Their product development process is well thought out, tried and tested. They depend on brainstorming sessions to come up with ideas that provide sustained creative solutions. * IDEO is evolving constantly with time, focusing on working more closely with its clients and external agencies in order to provide them better solutions and reduce their project execution times. * IDEO had a unique way of approaching a problem. It didn’t come up to a company with the symptom of a problem but rather focused on unearthing the root of the problem. It’s not that it had extensive knowledge on the field of the company it was helping out, but used the general ways of approaching and providing a creative solution to any field. Using a perspective of an outsider to the domain, in which it was helping out the company, enabled it to come up with unique solutions.
Weaknesses
* IDEO is involved in various sectors or industries. While diversification in expertise maybe a good attribute to have, spending its resources on such an extended range of services is not commendable. * There is the possibility that IDEO can branch out beyond their core competencies too. That makes it susceptible to losing its identity in the market. * Since it provides services to such a diverse range of fields, there is learning curve associated with every project it takes on. This is critical for coming up with the best solution, but it also takes a large chunk of time for the ideation process, time which essentially translates to money being lost. * IDEO has its centers located at various places globally. Coordination and communication with each of these centers is difficult and challenging. Also, it faces the risk of hiring wrong people, which means their HR team is tasked with very involved and detailed hiring process.

OPEN IDEO
Strengths
* It allows active participation from anyone around the world. They are provided with a common platform where they can collaborate in providing solutions. * Talented people from a broad range of competencies are allowed to come and work under the same roof, which results in refinement of ideas. * It has an optimized collaborative design network and therefore serves as a benchmark for other open source platforms. * It allows simultaneous projects to be handled with its huge community network base of users. * It attracts sponsors and companies who are willing to come up with interesting and meaningful social innovation experiments. * An inexpensive model for coming up with solutions and database, which benefits the nonprofit communities. * It offers challenges and problem statements on a wide range of social issues, which keep the user community involved and have a sense of belongingness to the society. They also are involved in various phases of the innovation project and not to any specific area.
Weaknesses
* Need to build a more robust and efficient collaborating platform. * Highly clustered core causes harm to ideation potential, as it impedes idea generation. * Inefficient network causing multiple repeated exposure or complex contagion that can cause people to prematurely cease exploring ideas. * Needs to be moded by community managers 24/7 to ensure the efficiency and preservation of ideals of IDEO.

Ideo Case #4-Marketing Management

...IDEO Case- Ch. 4; Marketing Management, Kotler; pg 119 1. Why has IDEO been so successful? What is the most difficult challenge it faces in conducting its research and designing its products? IDEO has been successful due to a “design thinking” approach centered around “human-centered methodology.” In addition, they design products that consumers actively want because they solve a consumer’s problem and as a result offer a superior experience. The most difficult challenge for IDEO is to design products from the outside in, in order to put customers first, as opposed to most tech companies that design from the inside out. They do deep dives into consumer behavior to determine how they purchase, interact with, use, and even dispose of products. They employ methods such as shadowing consumers, taking pictures or videos of them during product purchase or use occasions, conducting in-depth interviews with them to further evaluate their experiences. They also use “behavioral mapping,” which creates a photo log of people within a certain area like an airline departure lounge, a hospital waiting room, or a mall food court over a span of several days to gauge how the experience can be improved. IDEO also utilizes“camera journals” that participants keep, in which they record their visual impressions of a given product or category. They also invite consumers to use “storytelling” techniques to share personal narratives, videos, skits, or even animations about their experiences with...

...rP os t 9-605-069 REV: MARCH 6, 2013 AMY C. EDMONDSON Phase Zero: Introducing New Services at IDEO (A) op yo In July 2002, Douglas Dayton looked out across the space where designers, engineers, human factors experts, and other specialists worked in teams and reflected that it was not easy to evaluate the recent project carried out for mattress manufacturer Simmons. Dayton was a design engineer and head of IDEO’s Boston office. IDEO was a design and innovation firm known for the extraordinary range of products it had designed and its innovative approach to the design process. For the Simmons project, IDEO had embarked on a service that was not intended to result in a tangible product, at least not right away. Whereas a typical design project progressed through four phases designed to “do the thing right,” this service, known as “Phase 0,” was intended to help a client “do the right thing.” Rather than design a new product based on pre-specified needs, Simmons had asked IDEO to help it “look for unmet needs that exist and to identify new product opportunities.” The project proposal, entitled “Understand and Innovate,” described Phase 0 services as helping clients understand the world in a new way and innovate accordingly. At first glance, mattresses were not exciting territory for the firm, but as the team researched mattress consumers— conducting literature reviews, site visits, and interviews with customers and salespersons—they grew......

Ideo

...deoIDEO PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT 1. Yes. IDEO should accept the Visor project, but they could persuade Handspring’s management to change its launch timings to produce a better result. 2. IDEO is a firm that specializes in product design and innovations; it also provides services in packaging design, product research, executive training and education on innovation, and strategic consulting services .It is set up as a collection of studios (14 as of circa 2004) of about 10-20 people each. Each studio is operated on a profit and loss basis, and studio heads are not hired from the outside but come from within. The real innovative work at IDEO is done through project teams. It has something similar to a matrix-like structure. Projects operate across studios, drawing people from different studios. Project teams can have as few as three or four, or as many as a dozen members. Once projects are finished, the teams disband and employees move to other projects and hence the employees have a good circulation of jobs. IDEO’s signature process: learning about customer needs and experiences as the basis for innovative and rapid product design. Three values seem to infuse the learning and evaluation process throughout: user desirability, business viability, and technical and manufacturing feasibility. They involves rapid prototyping of ideas. The 5 different process involved are Phase 0 (Understand/observe), Phase 1(Visualise/realize), Phase 2 (Evaluating /Refining), Phase 3......

Consumer Behavior

...Bryne Beck Dr. Moore Consumer Behavior 05/06/2016 Case 1-1 1. Where does IDEO get inspiration for its product designs? Answer: I believe IDEO gets their inspiration from Thomas Edison and their consumers. 2. What kind of value do you think successful products deliver to consumers? Answer: Successful products leads to a higher satisfaction to the consumer, which in return, produces a higher value for that product. 3. Why do you think having a product that simply works doesn’t always translate to consumer acceptance? Answer: Consumers have both physical and psychological needs. If a product works but is unpleasant to that consumer in anyway then they will never accept it. 4. What is the relative importance of the utilitarian versus the hedonic value of products, as suggested by the work of IDEO? Answer: The success for IDEO comes from the fact they understand that utility is not enough and is why the product development requires consumers experience. 5. Do you agree with Edison’s observation that “genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration”? Explain your answer. Answer: People spend a tremendous amount of time solving problems and studying the issue. IDEO realizes they must first know their customer before actually solving any problems. Case 1-2 1. Examine further the “2011 Ranking of Top 100 Brands.” Classify these brands while considering the produce category or sector and the country of origin. Can you detect a pattern? ...devices, like it did for the first generations of laptops and desktops, (the “pull” strategy) and as such Intel may lose their brand identity/preference for devices containing their chips in the future. Marketing Excellence: IDEO 1) Why has IDEO been so successful? What is the most difficult challenge they face in conducting their research and designing their products? Suggested Answer: IDEO strives to design products that consumers actively want. In many cases they have to “dig deep” because they are trying to create consumer-friendly solutions and the consumers often don’t know what they want or what they need. In order to achieve these consumer-friendly solutions, IDEO tries to uncover deep insights through a variety of human-centered research methods. 2) In the end, IDEO creates great solutions for other observational methods to conduct companies that then receive all the credit. Should IDEO try to create more brand awareness for itself? Why or why not? Suggested Answers: Students’ answers will vary—some will say “yes” and others will say “no.” Both sets of answers should reflect on the nature of the company, its products, and its core competency. What does the company do very well? Designs solutions for others. Good students will note that IDEO has created and commands a very well defined “niche” in the business world and is very successful in that niche and any movement out of that niche can be difficult and dangerous. Knowledge Management

...as justified true belief referring to the process of knowledge creation in organization. To answer why Knowledge is defined as justified true belief, we need to analyze how is the process of knowledge creation in organization at first. Based on the SECI model of knowledge creation, the process of knowledge creation in organization including four phases. The first phase is socialization which means Sharing and creating tacit knowledge through direct experience. It includes four parts. First, capturing tacit knowledge through direct experience (e.g. interaction with suppliers or customers). In the IDEO case, they kept clients involved and learned from their clients by assimilating the things clients did well into their own methodology. Second, by walking around inside the company, knowledge or the latest available information was collected or acquired. In the 7-11 case, through POS data and Tanpin Kanri, 7-11 obtained the latest information of inventory and sell order data, they make the reasonable decision on these valuable information and knowledge. Third, accumulating and systemizing tacit knowledge by and sharing between individuals. In IEDO and 7-11, they both create an environment for knowledge sharing. IEDO use brainstorming and 7-11 use “Box Lunch Corner” to encourage employees to show their ideas. Last, interpreting tacit knowledge by transferring one’s ideas or images directly to colleagues or subordinates. Experience these four steps, the tacit knowledge......
