Dissatisfied Americans Throughout the generations, Americans have created a love for materialistic items. The production of these items are just simple not enough for the American society. This generation that we live in is constantly wanting more and are never satisfied; therefore, their quality of life diminishes. Most Americans that have everything they desire, tend to be dissatisfied. As you can see in Source D, the room is cluttered with a numerous amount of materialistic items. The woman’s facial expression clearly shows her dissatisfaction. In today’s society, people want more and more and more. It’s kind of like the children’s book “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”. The mouse wants a cookie, then when you give the mouse cookie; it wants a glass of milk. The mouse in this book gives a direct representation of the common American’s greed. This infection of greed in American has caused the quality of life to decrease in our society. Source E states, “During the same period, quality of life as measured by the index of social health has decrease by roughly the same percentage.” This statistic proved the quality of life and social health has decreased due to consumerism. America has begun to “base our entire lives, our entire culture, and way of being on the belief that ‘just a little bit more’ will finally buy happiness”(Source E). The American’s “need” for materialistic items has spiraled out of control. Source E states, “The average working woman plays with her children forty minutes a week- and shops six hours.” This move for materialistic items is not only diminishing ones’ quality of life, but it is impeding family
