The theoretical framework employed was agenda setting with content analysis as the method of research. The results reveal that the grassroots are not given credence as a key factor in the films except as means to justify the ends of the political class and players in the political process. The roles of the grassroots in the political arena are mostly depicted significantly as thugs, assassins, villains, prostitutes and others who are involved in different kinds of undesirable practices and vicious acts. Such portrayals could be contributory to politics often being described as ‘a dirty game’ with the grassroots increasingly having apathy to political processes and creating the divide of ‘them’ and ‘us’; where ‘them’is the political class and ‘us’...

Case Study

...For exclusive use at University of Strathclyde, 2015 IMD320 02.10.2006 INTERNATIONAL PRUDENTIAL UK: REBUILDING A MIGHTY BUSINESS Research Fellow Jean-Louis Barsoux and Professor JeanFrançois Manzoni prepared this case as a basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either effective or ineffective handling of a business situation. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1…. It felt like New Year’s Eve as Prudential senior managers joined their chief executive, Mark Wood, in counting down the seconds to midnight. The date was October 4, 2005. The venue was a trendy London restaurant. And they were celebrating the completion of the company’s 1,000-day journey. Wood gave a very personal speech, thanking several individuals. He also recognized the tremendous collective effort that had propelled the insurer from seventh position to second in terms of domestic market share. In less than three years, there had been a 55% jump in sales, a 58% increase in new business achieved profit and a 22% gross reduction in cost base. Yet the success had not been achieved without pain. The UK workforce had almost halved since Wood had been appointed CEO in February 2001. Indeed, of the 87 executives present that evening, 38 were new to the senior management group. And from the top executive team he inherited, there were only two survivors. As he completed his speech, Wood’s mind wandered back to the state of the company he had joined. Copyright © 2006 by IMD - International...

Satellite Communication in Ghana-Challenges and Prospects

...TITLE: Satellite Communication in Ghana-challenges and prospects Introduction Busy Internet is a Ghanaian ISP that uses satellite connectivity to bring Internet to West Africans. The operations of this ISP illustrate the reliability, versatility and efficiency of, VSAT, (Very Small Aperture Terminal) networks in delivering fast broadband Internet services. This paper discusses technical, economic and regulatory issues relating to satellite networks as a means of bringing Internet to Ghanaians, and the challenges confronting the country’s National Communication Authority and the Ministry of Communications. Waking up to the Call Satellite communication was not an integral part of the Ghanaian communications system until the early 1980s. Prior to 1981 communication within Ghana and between Ghana and the outside world was not very effective. The country relied on aging Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) Lines for voice, and terrestrial microwave networks for radio, and television. International voice, video and data communications links were limited, with most of such communications services operated by the government run telecommunications monopoly. The construction of a satellite earth station at Kuntunse in the Eastern region of Ghana in 1981, and related communication reforms of the early 1990s marked a dramatic shift towards greater use of satellite communications technology over the next two decades. Satellite earth stations and connecting equipment were installed by private...

...Arshad Mahmood Word Count: 4, 339 (excluding references) Turnitin similarity score: 1% (excluding citation) SITUATION ANALYSIS iPad-2, Apple Inc.’s new product made it to the international markets on 25th March 2011 after quite a lot of advertisement hype and wait. This invention easily makes the list of the best products in the last ten years or so. The creation is a testimony of the success of Apple Inc. and is centered more on the use from fingertips than the hand. This sustains the road of progress that Apple has obtained after iPod and iPhone. The Economist made an interesting comment on the cover by saying, “The enthusiasm of the Apple faithful may be overdone, but Mr. Jobs’s record suggests that when he blesses a market, it takes off.” It can be inferred that Apple Inc. is doing wonderfully well at the moment. Much of its success can be pointed to the optimization of value exploration, value creation and value delivery. The initial level of value exploration targets the mind of the consumer and also the ability of the company. It also takes into account the resource space as well. On another level, the value creation is centered on getting the profit. Here, the key element includes competency in the paradigm of business and association with business partners. The third level is primarily based on management and is the value delivery. The crux elements include the management of resource, customer relationship and the business partnership. Apple succeeds...

Wal-Mart Strategic Audit

...Wal-Mart is the number one retailer in the United States. Geographical growth opportunities are shrinking within the boundaries of the United States. The company needs to evaluate multiple options to determine the best strategy to deploy. The challenge is “keeping the world’s biggest retailer on its phenomenal roll and delivering the huge sales and earnings increases that investors had come to expect from Wal-Mart over the years” (Camerius& Hunger, p. 19-30, 2006). The company’s current strategic plan is tothrive in the followingareas: • Low costs, high customer service, and always low prices • Product mix • Logistics and supply-chain management • International markets • Domestic growth • Public relations I have developed multiple strategic alternativesfor the company. They are as follows: • Stability – Pause And Proceed: Pause physical growth then proceed with growth domestically and globally • Growth – Concentration: Concentrated Internet program to target domestic and foreign markets • Growth – Concentration: Horizontal Growth with International Entry for global geographical internal expansion The plan deployed must be consistent with the corporate strategy. Per Sam Walton (1918-1992), the company’s founder, “Our goal has always been in our business to be the very best and, along with that, we believe that in order to do that, you’ve got to make a good situation and put the interests of your associates first. If we really do that consistently, they in turn...

...Assignment Development of BMW into the leading car company in the UK for luxury class cars Abstract: The following report will examine the story of the German car producer BMW. Initiating from its inception to the modern day where BMW is a multinational concern. This report will highlight the internal and external circumstances to which BMW owes its current place as market leader for luxury cars in the UK. The subsequent analysis is based exclusively on sources collated from secondary research data. Research data consisted of chronicles and literature from BMW, domestic and foreign journals, marketing and market statistics, as well as published company reports. To reveal the success story of BMW, we will explore the concern with the aid of the SWOT-Analysis and of course using the 5-Forces according to Porter, to compare BMW with their competitors in the same product category. Furthermore we will use the PEST Analysis to scan the external macro-environment in which the company is operating. In addition to the outline above we will examine several important findings of our research. For example the strong dependency of BMW to foreign markets, these markets contribute 81% of the total turnover. (Schmid, Grosche et al., 2008, p. 16) Also, we can examine the reasons leading to a 4% increase in sales in the trading year 2012, operating within the premium segment of the UK to which they already had a lead (BMW Group, 2013). ...HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW People Won't Change Ifs a psychological dynamic called a "competing commitment" and until managers understand how it works and the ways to overcome it, they can't do a thing about change-resistant employees. The Real Reason by Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow Lahey E VERY MANAGER is familiar with the employee who just won't change. Sometimes it's easy to see whythe employee fears a shift in power, the need to learn new skills, the stress of having to join a new team. In other cases, such resistance is far more puzzling. An employee has the skills and smarts to make a change with ease, has shown a deep commitment to the company, genuinely supports the change-and yet, inexplicably, does nothing. What's going on? As organizational psychologists, we have seen this dynamic literally hundreds of times, and our research and analysis have recently led us to a surprising yet deceptively simple conclusion. Resistance to change does not reflect opposition, nor is it merely a result of inertia. Instead, even as they hold a sincere commitment to change, many people are unwittingly applying productive energy toward a hidden cornpeting commitment The resulting dynamic equilibrium stalls the effort in what looks like resistance but is in fact a kind of personal immunity to change. When you, as a manager, uncover an employee's competing commitment, behavior that has seemed irrational and ineffective suddenly becomes stunningly sensible and masterful-but unfortunately...
