Understanding training and coaching in the workplace.

Understand how to provide training appropriate to the workplace.

Identifying training needs.
A training need may arise for many reasons this could include the maintenance of existing competencies, a change in procedures, the acquisition of new equipment, a change of roll and responsibilities, the identification of unsafe practices etc.
Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx use two systems for recording the maintenance of existing competencies these being Terian that is used to ensure that front line personnel meet the requirement to attend risk critical assessments within specified time periods, and PDRPro which is an electronic personal development recording system.
An annual training plan is developed for each station based on the risk profile for that station and identifies topics to be covered during weekly training sessions . A review of relevant Standard Operating Procedures is incorporated within these training sessions to make sure all personnel are familiar with the correct procedure and are aware of any changes. Safety issues that have arisen within the service are also briefed to personnel using Operational Procedural Alerts.

Training techniques.
Dependant on the training required various techniques are available. Most commonly used are practical scenarios and simulations that allow personnel to gain experience in following standard procedures and gain familiarisation with equipment, this offers the trainer the opportunity to demonstrate what is required, observe and asses the trainees following the procedure and give feedback. These sessions are normally preceded by a lecture or presentation covering what we are going to do and why ensuring learners receive all the necessary information.

With one member of staff I get results and never have to ask twice, she is always positive when at work and always willing to support me but over time I had found out she was making a lot of mistakes when packing trays. I had to be very careful how I approached her about this because I didn’t want to affect her work ethic or make her think that she wasn’t very good at her job. After observing her for a few days, I quickly identified where the mistakes were being made and decided that a bit of refresher training was the best course of action. I approached the individual and spoke to her about the mistakes she was making, but said not to worry we would work together to rectify the mistakes. We sat down and discussed a plan moving forward and we agreed that I would be working a lot more closely with the individual to assist with additional training. Here I reread HRM practices from a Foucauldian power-knowledge perspective and suggest that this provides an avenue to reorient contemporary, historical, and comparative analyses of the area. A glimpse at human resource management (HRM) texts would seem to give light to a comment by Beer, Spector, Lawrence, Mills, and Walton (1984) that HRM is a series of seemingly disjointed activities. This notion echoes an earlier view of Baldamus (1961: 347) that what is encompassed by HRM's subject matter is "anything from supervision, incentives and profit sharing to machine-paced production, methods of training and employee selection." Often this heterogeneity is excused in terms of HRM's reflecting the ad hoc and reactive nature of its origins (Jacoby, 1985; Niven, 1967; Ozanne, 1967). What the heterogeneity of HRM highlights, however, is the importance of an organizing principle, or analytical focus, as opposed to common sense description, which gives HRM practices a theoretical coherence. HRM's heterogeneity stresses the importance of an order "that turns a set of bits, which have limited significance on their own, into an intelligible whole" (Turner, 1983: 191).
