AP Microeconomics Midterm Study Guide
Scarcity, Opportunity Costs, and Trade Offs
● Scarcity: limited nature of society’s resources
● Opportunity Costs: the value of the next best thing that is given up when a choice is made
○ (ex: when Carla goes to college, her O.C is the $$$ she would have made doing something else with her time)
● Trade Offs: whatever must be given up to obtain some item
○ Trade off is tangible
Productions Possibility Frontier
● 4 Key Assumptions
1) Only 2 goods can be produced
2) Full employment of resources
3) Fixed technology
4) Fixed resources (Ceteris Paribus)
● PPF / PPC / PPG: a model that shows alternative ways an economy can use its resources by evaluating scarcity, trade offs, opportunity costs, and efficiency. Shows the combinations of output that an economy can possibly produce given the available factors of production and the available production technology.
● Straight Line: Follows the law of constant opportunity cost, meaning that resources are easily adaptable for producing either good.
● Bowed Out: Follows the law of increasing opportunity costs, meaning that as you produce more of any good, the opportunity cost (foregone production of another good) will increase; resources are NOT easily adaptable to producing both goods.
Also known as a concave PPC.
● When points move along the curve, the market is at productive efficiency.
● Points outside of PPC: unattainable given present resources, can ONLY be reached with trade
● Shifters of PPC
1) Change in resource quantity or quality
2) Change in technology
3) Change in trade

Specialization
● Who has the ________________ ?
○ Comparative Advantage: producer with lowest opportunity cost, determined by price per unit
○ Absolute Advantage: produce who can produce the most output with the least amount of resources
● To calculate comparative advantages for 2 countries and determine who

...great absentees of the social media. Out of fifty pharmaceuticals included in a social media use study, only ten had an identifiable presence on social media. Several articles had been written about what they call the "PharmaSocmephobia." A very interesting study from IMS Institute dedicates over 40 pages to explore, discuss and analyze the reasons, the pros and cons of this behavior. By ignoring social media pharmaceuticals are missing on great information for product development, key opinion leader identification and monitoring. Social media are a tool to listen to customer ideas and feedback, and collaborate with social groups to test products and services. As stated by IMS Pharmaceutical companies cannot afford to delay their entry into these ever evolving and increasingly significant new channels of communication. "Early movers will test the water with an educated trial and error approach and discover benefits for the company as a whole while moving closer to consumers and patients."(Social, 2014) Hard copies of healthcare information decreased in importance while online researchers for healthcare information went from 25% on 2000 to 72% of Americans and 82% among Europeans on 2012 according to IMS study. Personal Narrative: A Child Called Francisco

...It can not be in a place that will somehow in a way harm or injure me. What I do for fun is boring to other people since I have to be in the house the whole damn day, I have to do a lot of boring stuff. I clean the house twice as a punishment for being in the middle using my phone which nearly killed me. I usually just watch television and use my phone. A lot of people think that would seem great, but after a while it really gets boring. When I get bored I look for an inflatable ball and kick it around the house until I get bored of that. I usually have a backup plan for when I do everything I can possibly do in the house to keep me unbored, but even then I get very bored. It has been a while since the day I nearly died. I still walk outside with caution but I have fun doing the outside activities I was not able to do for quite a long while. My mom says she still has a feeling about me getting injured, but even she knows I can not be inside the house trying to hide from something I can not see, smell, feel, taste, or hear. When im playing Outside I have nothing on my kind other than being good at what ever I am doing. I had a strange feeling, that if I were to get hit by the car, that I would be okay. I have been in so much physical pain, But it was never enough to make me need to go to the hospital. I have fallen of the 11 foot roof many times, with no injury at all. I would have a little leg pain but it would go away, but Basically I am indestructible. Well that was the story...

The Death of Communication

...For decades we have been discovering new ways to keep in touch with our family, friends, and co-workers. First we started with learning to speak, then to read and write. When distances grew between us and we decided we wanted to still keep in touch without having to travel, we started mailing letters to friends and family. Of course, we decided that was too slow for communication, then came the telegram and the telephone. Needing to go even faster brought us the internet, cell phones, and the smart phones we use today. You are probably itching to check your phone right now, aren’t you? You are probably going to send a quick text to a friend or significant other but you won’t call them. The problems with these advances are that we are actually communicating less than before and our communication skills have dwindled. Technology is negatively affecting our communication skills with each other. When you are in a social situation, are you talking amongst your friends and family, or are you checking your facebook and text messages? We are constantly connected to the outside world by our phones, PDA’s, and computers. You would think that this means that we are communicating more, right? The problem is humanities communication skills are a whole have actually gotten worse with technology. Most people would rather send a text message than call someone because it is more convenient. Text messaging is probably the technology that has caused the most damage. Children in school are now...

Cognitive Dissonance In Dystopian Society

...residents say “We are chained hand and foot by protocol, enslaved to a static, empty world where men and women can’t read, where the scientific advances of the ages are the preserve of the rich, where artists and poets are doomed to endless repetitions and sterile reworking of past masterpieces. Nothing is new. New does not exist. Nothing changes, nothing grows, evolves, develops. Time has stopped. Progress is forbidden” (Fisher) The idea behind the protocol was to eliminate uniqueness among the people and the environment ridding the world of competition and aggression. The people did not account for uncontrollable human characteristics and the fact that change is inevitable. People, such as the 9 fingered one and his followers, become bored and resent those who are the root cause of that boredom saying “nothing has changed or will change, so we much change it”(Fisher). In both these cases those who put in place the prison and outside world policies believed they were doing it for the benefit of the greater good and refuse to let themselves see the negatives of their actions. What makes humanś destroy themselves is also what makes them grow, insatiable curiosity, individualism and every other human characteristic. It is what makes each person so incredible and, should and cannot be controlled. The way to get to a desired end result can appear less important than the result itself. This idea comes into play often when choosing leaders to follow. If a person promiseś us one...

The entertainment industry seems to have created the ultimate formula for the "bad manager" character, so why can't real managers understand how to be effective? When employees choose to leave a position, it's often because of their manager or relationships with people in their working environment. People quit people, not jobs. Management is a Process. It includes four main functions, viz., Planning, Organising, Directing and Controlling. The manager has to Plan and Organise all the activities. He had to give proper Directions to his subordinates. He also has to Control all the activities. The manager has to perform these functions continuously. Therefore, management is a continuous and never ending process. For an effective manager...
