Throughout “Bless Me Ultima”, written by Rudolfo Anaya, we witness a young boy named Antonio experience a multitude of vivid dreams, and the various literary devices applied by Anaya to emotionally invest the audience into Antonio’s experiences. Anaya sets the mood by using diction and he utilizes imagery to the point where we develop strong sympathetic feelings towards the main characters, or victims, in Antonio’s dreams. Many of Antonio’s dreams contain graphic descriptions of how the people appear in his subconscious. One dream in particular gives a descriptive portrayal of Narciso’s appearance and what appears to happen to him after he dies. The use of emotional appeal, foreshadowing, and vivid imagery help aid Anaya in his description of this dream by building the reader’s emotions towards what happened to Narciso and the aftermath. …show more content…
Later on in the story, Antonio’s dream is proven true to an extent. Tenorio was not punished for the crime he committed and we are led to believe that Narciso suffers. This is an example of how the author utilizes foreshadowing. For imagery Anaya gives a description of Narciso that helps pull the reader in, making the reader feel as if they are standing right next to Antonio and feeling the same despair as him.“In the crackling, frolicking flames I saw the face of Narciso. Symbolism In Bless Me Ultima

...In the book, Bless Me, Ultima, the author Rudolfo Anaya uses literary devices to convey different purposes. Throughout Antonio’s dream in chapter nine, Anaya explains the idea that innocence can be puzzling, but it’s only temporary. With the use of symbolism, imagery, and connotation, Anaya projects this purpose. There are two symbols used in chapter nine; the Marez brothers, and Rosie’s place. The Marez brothers symbolize the reality which is that everyone eventually loses their innocence. Antonio describes them as ‘’three dark figures’’ (70) as they walk into Rosie’s place. They’re not referred to by their names, but rather as figures who are about to sin. Rosie’s place is another symbol, symbolizing evil. When Antonio’s brothers were...

The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World

...Integrating antithetical hues of mystical magic and routinal reality lightens a perception that otherwise is unable to be seen. The works of both Rudolfo Anaya; Bless Me, Ultima and Gabriel García Márquez; “The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World”, reflect this key aspect of magical realism. Magical realism as well incorporates key elements within the literary mode, where essentially the magic and the realistic aspects of the novel are kept in equal focus. The themes of both Anaya and Márquez are different but similar from each other, Anaya aims to show the self-reliance an individual often needs in order to flourish and Márquez shows that humans often find extraordinary influence from the ordinary to flourish; but, the means to which the accomplish...

Bless Me Ultima Literary Analysis

...In the novel Bless Me,Ultima written by rudolfo anaya, Antonio's dream in chapter twenty two explains his dream and the different type of things he saw throughout his dream. This helps convey the idea of confusion between antonios religion and the suffering he's been through. We see this through the use of symbolism and imagery. In the beginning of Antonio's dream, antonio sees some type of “parade” passing with all the men Antonio had seen die. Among them was Lupito, narciso, and florence. “Finally i saw the body of florence, floating motionlessly in the dark water.”(243). THis was an example of imagery. The dark water represented sadness and death. I believe this because dark is usually a very sad color and and in funerals people wear black because of their deep sorrow .This is why the water was black instead of clear. This was also an example of imagery because, it gave so much detail it made us feel like we were part of the dream and staring at the same thing antonio was...
