Gratitude on materialism and temporal discounting Abstract

2

Materialism and temporal discounting can hinder psychological wellbeing. In youth, materialism is linked to anxiety and unhappiness (Kasser, 2005), while temporal discounting is related to poor academic performance (Kirby, Winston, & Santiesteban, 2005). We hypothesized inducing gratitude would reduce materialism and temporal discounting, with altruism as mediator. Polak and McCullough (2006) theorized gratitude provides security as one recognizes good will of others, reducing materialism. Furthermore, broaden-and-build theory (Fredrickson, 1998, 2001) explains positive emotions increase variety in ideas. Reducing temporal discounting, the theory would expand a person’s thoughts beyond the present, helping them value future rewards. We had 71 participants from Grade 2–4 at Victorious Christian Montessori College from Bacoor, Imus, and Alfonso. They were Filipinos aged 6 – 10, divided equally for experimental and control groups. To induce gratitude as manipulation of the independent variable, the experimental group was instructed to write things they were grateful for. Then, GQ-6, MVS-c, and Altruistic Behavior-Elementary scale were administered. Next, temporal discounting was disguised as a reward. There was no significant difference on materialism [F(1, 69) F!"# =0.07 < F!"#$ = 3.98, p = 0.57] and temporal discounting [F(1,51) F!"# =0.63 < Fcrit = 3.98, p = 0.12] at α
