The Future of Nursing

...The Future of Nursing? How will nursing in the future be impacted as a result of the Institute Of Medicine’s (IOM) report of 2010? Frank Gallegos Santa Fe Community College 10/27/13 The Future of Nursing? How will nursing in the future be impacted as a result of the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report of 2010? In 2010 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) put out a report that has already started to impact nursing today but is really going to affect the future of nursing. This report is going to have major effects on nursing in the future; it is going to effect the education requirements of nurses, nursing practices, especially in the primary care area and the role of nurses as leaders. Educational Requirements for Nurses As with everything in life, change is required for something to grow and prosper. Nursing is no different. With the aging workforce there is going to be a huge shortage of nurse and this is going to create major problems. According to the IOM, there is no conclusive studies that shows, a Bachelors in Science of Nursing (BSN) entry level nurse has any overall effect on patient outcome vs. an Associate’s Degree of Nursing (ADN). The BSN entry level nurse does bring into the field some valuable competencies like, health policy, health care finance, leadership, Evidence Based Practice (EBP), collaboration and teamwork. The higher level entry brings higher educated nurses that tend to go on to graduate programs that will bring more nurses in the fields of...

...The Future is Here and Now Dr. Chen of The New York Times wrote “Nurses currently form the largest sector of health care providers, with more than three million currently registered; but few have led or even been involved in the formal policy discussions regarding the future care of patients.” (Chen, 2010). According to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) report of the future of nursing tides are changing. In the paragraphs to follow this paper will discuss how the IOM report has impacted the field of nursing and how registered nurses (RNs) will be acquiring higher more specialized education, ascending into leadership, and transform their practice. Impact on Education The acquisition of a nursing license in the United States is unique in the fact that there are currently several pathways to licensure. A person wishing to practice nursing may complete a hospital diploma program, a community college associate degree in nursing (ADN), attend a four-year college for a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) or even complete a bridge program in which the individual already possesses a baccalaureate degree in another field of study learns nursing practice (Creasia & Friberg, 2011, p. 25). The report from the institute of medicine (IOM) recognizes these varied pathways to nursing as a benefit as well as a hindrance to the field (Institute of Medicine, 2011, p. 166). The benefit to the field is availability of nurses due to the attractive cost of education at the diploma and community...

...In the face of an ever-changing health care system, as nurses, we have no choice but to change as well. The Institute of Medicine (IOM), an independent organization with a mission to, “Serve as advisor to the nation to improve health,” created a report outlining major categories of change necessary so that nurses can meet the changing health care needs of the United States (Institute of Medicine, 2010). This report, titled, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”, will be the focus of this paper. This paper will look at the impact of the Institute of Medicine’s report on nursing education, nursing practice in primary care, the impact of the report on the nurses as leaders, and how the author of this paper will change her practice to meet the goals of the report. One of the key points in the report states, “Nurses should practice to the full extent of their education and training” (Goeshchel, 2011). This report fully encourages nurses to never stop learning, and to prepare themselves to maintain a high level of knowledge in their field. The IOM report also follows this key message on education with recommendations for moving forward. One of the recommendations is that as a profession, nurses “increase the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degrees to 80% by 2020” (Goeshchel, 2011). The Future of Nursing Practice

...The Future of Nursing Practice If nurses truly “practice to the full extent of their education and training” (Institute of Medicine, 2010, p. 85), then the sky is the limit for how nurses can lead the way in developing positive changes in many different aspects of the healthcare paradigm. Although there are countless relevant literary reports on how to achieve such changes, The Institute of Medicine’s report on the Future of Nursing (2010) is held in the highest regard for the impact it could have on nursing education, nursing practice, and nursing leadership. About 55% of nurses today are prepared at a Baccalaureate Degree level (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014). A key recommendation of the Future of Nursing report is to increase the number of Baccalaureate Degree prepared nurses to at least 80%. This would impact nursing education significantly, by changing the structure of the delivery of entry level nursing education, or possibly eradicating Associate’s Degree nursing programs altogether. According to Sherman (2012): Many nurses don’t realize that as part of the Bologna agreement, which was signed over a decade ago, professional nursing education in the European Union shifted to the baccalaureate level as the standard for professional licensure. Australia and New Zealand also now have BSN preparation as entry into practice. There are a number of states in the United States where there is active lobbying for legislation to require RNs to obtain a...

The Impact of the Iom Report on the Future of Nursing

...The impact of the IOM report on the future of nursing The passing of the Affordable Care Act by congress in 2010 will require the health care system to transform the future of nursing in order to keep up with the changes in health care in the United States. This paper will discuss the 2010 Institute of Medicine’s report on the impact of nursing education, nursing practice with a focus on primary care, how it will change current nursing practice and the nurse’s role as a leader. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report was written to explore how the nursing profession should change to build a stronger health care system. A vision was developed to make quality care accessible to the diverse population of the United States, promote wellness and disease prevention, improve health outcomes and provide compassionate care across the lifespan (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2011). Nurses must achieve higher levels of education and utilize this education and training to meet the challenges facing health care. An associate degree nurse is excellent; however a Bachelor of Science nurse (BSN) is encouraged. A BSN possesses a broader foundation of nursing including community health and leadership content. The link between lower mortality rates and educational level has also caused the BSN to be preferred. An all BSN workforce at the entry level would provide a more uniform foundation for the reconceptualized roles for nurses and new models of care that are envisioned (IOM). The ability for...
