AN ANALYSIS OF IMPERIAL OIL 9
Strategic DirectionImperial Oil does not take a conventional stance on professing its vision, mission, and values. It does not explicitly state any of these guides, but instead offers a combination of the three under such headers as “Our approach,” “Outlook for energy to 2030,” “Safety,” “Innovation,” “Greenhouse gas emissions,” “Water management,” “Air quality,” “Land management,” “Economic development,” “Aboriginal development,” and “Our people”.As the vision, mission, and value statements are not offered in a conventional format, they have been condensed and interpreted primarily from the “What guides us” and “How we do business” portions of Imperial Oil's website, as well as “Our approach” in the file “This Is Imperial Oil”. The statements presented here are created in the interest of having declared goals in these categories, which the company has not listed under the titles “vision,” “mission,” or “value”; they are derivative of information presented on the website, and are not stated explicitly by Imperial Oil. Vision:“Nobody gets hurt — we aim for 100% safety on the job and continually work towards improving that goal while exploring for, producing, refining and marketing products essential to society.”
Mission: “We focus on these priorities: creating value for customers and shareholders, upholding business ethics, fostering responsible development, maintaining operational excellence, cultivating a strong workforce, and contributing to communities.”
Values:“Safety, accountability, and social responsibility are our core drives.”

Evaluating the vision statement, it does seem like it is directional, and is specific enough to provide guidance. Felton (2012) highlights an instance of the absolute safety policy wherein a contracted worker working for K2 Mining firm lost the tips of two fingers; Imperial Oil responded by

The Prize Epic Quest for Oil Summary

...Gracie King Dr. Morgan Advanced Readings in Energy 15 August 2015 The Prize: Epic Quest for Oil, Money, and Power The history of the petroleum industry is a long and enduring journey. It was not started by one single individual, but by the actions of a long list of entrepreneurial figures whom all play a part in this oil journey. Oil was first used as a sort of home remedy by the Indians. They called it “Seneca Oil” and it was used to cure headaches, upset stomachs, burns, to heal wounds and the list goes on. George Bissell was a very important individual in the creation of the oil industry. He spotted a bottle of this Pennsylvania rock oil in one of his professor’s classrooms. He became very curious with the rock oil and believed that it could be used as an illuminant because it was flammable. If this rock oil could become the new illuminating oil, Bissell would become an extremely wealthy man and that became his motivation. In 1854, Bissell gathered investors and hired a professor from Yale, Benjamin Silliman, to analyze all the properties of this oil to determine if it could indeed be used as an illuminant and lubricant. Sure enough, the research proved that rock oil was the next big illuminant and Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company was created in 1854. However it was not a breeze to get this oil. Edwin Drake, a retired railway conductor, was tasked to use his salt techniques to find oil. In spring of 1859, Drake’s driller who was called “Uncle Billy” spotted oil...

...HIGH-LEVEL EMPLOYEE INVOLVEMENT AT DELTA AIR LINES Bruce E. Kaufman As described in this unique case study, Delta Air Lines operates one of the most advanced, highlevel employee involvement programs in the nation. Based on in-depth field study and personal interviews, the development, structure, operation, and business goals of the program are described. The study then summarizes the business benefits and costs of this type of high-level employee involvement program and concludes with 12 “lessons learned.” © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Employee involvement is not a new idea, as witnessed by William Basset’s 1919 book When the Workmen Help You Manage. Only in the last two decades, however, has employee involvement (EI) taken off, particularly among “high-performance” organizations. Although EI programs are widespread, considerable diversity exists in their breadth, depth, and form. In a study of 313 large companies with EI programs, Lawler, Albers, and Ledford (1992) found that six out of ten had only “low-level” EI programs—based on sharing of information, rewards, power, and training with employees—or programs that relied principally on financial incentives, while only 7% of companies had “high-level” programs. A more recent edition of their study (Lawler, Mohrman, & Benson, 2001) does not provide comparable data, but the relative rarity of high-level EI programs is indicated by the fact that in 1999 only 7% of companies had some form of participation group other than a...

The World in 2008

...EDITOR'S INTRODUCTION Two big events will frame the year ahead: America’s presidential election and the summer Olympic games in Beijing. The race for the White House will be a marathon, from the front-loaded primary season in January and February to the general election in November. The betting is that the winner will be a Democrat—with a strong chance that a Clinton will again be set to succeed a Bush as leader of the free world. China, meanwhile, will hope to use the Olympics to show the world what a splendid giant it has become. It will win the most gold medals, and bask in national pride and the global limelight. But it will also face awkward questions on its repressive politics. America and China will be prime players in the matters that will concentrate minds around the world in 2008. One of these is the world economy, which can no longer depend on America, with its housing and credit woes, to drive growth. America should—just—avoid recession, but it will be China (for the first time the biggest contributor to global growth) along with India and other emerging markets that will shine. Another focus of attention will be climate change. As China replaces America as the world’s biggest producer of greenhouse gases, serious efforts on global warming depend on the serious involvement of those two countries. If 2007 was the year when this rose to the top of the global agenda, in 2008 people will expect action. It is striking that green is a theme that links all the contributions...

Bloodlines of the Illuminati

...Bloodlines of Illuminati by: Fritz Springmeier, 1995 Introduction: I am pleased & honored to present this book to those in the world who love the truth. This is a book for lovers of the Truth. This is a book for those who are already familiar with my past writings. An Illuminati Grand Master once said that the world is a stage and we are all actors. Of course this was not an original thought, but it certainly is a way of describing the Illuminati view of how the world works. The people of the world are an audience to which the Illuminati entertain with propaganda. Just one of the thousands of recent examples of this type of acting done for the public was President Bill Clinton’s 1995 State of the Union address. The speech was designed to push all of the warm fuzzy buttons of his listening audience that he could. All the green lights for acceptance were systematically pushed by the President’s speech with the help of a controlled congressional audience. The truth on the other hand doesn’t always tickle the ear and warm the ego of its listeners. The light of truth in this book will be too bright for some people who will want to return to the safe comfort of their darkness. I am not a conspiracy theorist. I deal with real facts, not theory. Some of the people I write about, I have met. Some of the people I expose are alive and very dangerous. The darkness has never liked the light. Yet, many of the secrets of the Illuminati are locked up tightly simply because secrecy is a way...
