Exercise 7-2: “In-Basket” The role of a supervisor can vary from mentor to disciplinarian, and an important trait of an effective supervisor is the ability to distinguish between tasks that should be delegated or acted upon. Many supervisors lack the common knowledge of what is necessary to entrust his or her subordinates with assignments. This can be harmful to the department’s business objective. Therefore, informed, willing and capable of what is required of a supervisor will ensure an effectively operated department. The basics steps of delegation make the process simpler like following an instruction manual. It is a guide that every supervisor should follow. During the research conducted with other team members on a hypothetical situation involving the supervision of a retail store, a list of tasks were left for the store supervisor to either undertake or delegate to the employees. Some of the items on the list were unanimously agreed upon and certain others were not. Many factors come into play when delegating or retaining duties as a supervisor. For instance, the management pyramid within an organization may determine the length of responsibilities each department supervisor may hold. Although ideally a supervisor governs the daily responsibilities, some of them are controlled by upper management. The reluctance to assign undertakings to subordinates may fall on the company philosophy. Department supervisors like other people do not always make the correct decisions in delegating responsibilities. Sometimes because of a fear of failure he or she will preserve many of the tasks for him or herself. The 10 items reflected during the study were unquestionably straightforward and did not require much thought. Perhaps had the list been more complicated, the decision to retain or delegate may be more challenging. Item number three, determining the store hours during the holiday was the only one agreed upon between all of the classmates. Since the store hours affect all of the employees’ schedules, and one that commands the attention of the supervisor. With item number four, dealing with a customer complaint, is an item that should be handled directly by the supervisor. If a customer asks to speak with someone in a higher position within an organization because of dissatisfaction with service or an employee, the only resolution to this issue would be to involve the first line supervisor. Many customers are not content with dealing merely with an employee and for the good of the branch the supervisor should handle the complaint. Item number seven involved the visit from the Fire Marshall’s office to conduct an on-site inspection. Again this is an assignment that can clearly be carried out by the shift supervisors because a report is generated after the inspection and if any corrections need to be made, these can be reviewed and coordinated by the branch supervisor.
When clarifying which duties to assign or maintain, the supervisor must have an established trusting relationship with his or her employees. It can be challenging for a supervisor to operate a section efficiently if responsibilities have not been defined. If roles are not clear, this could cause confusion amongst the employees. So the issue of duty allocation is two-fold. One because the supervisor did not ensure the employees obvious functions within the department and two because the trust is not confirmed. In the assessment of the suggested tasks the decision was based on capabilities of the supervisor, personality and intuition.
Each supervisor operates and thinks differently. Every decision is made based on the functionality of the department, its employees and business objectives. Although each team member in this project had unique ideas on which tasks to delegate and which ones to maintain and act upon, the decisions were made based on the type of supervisor the classmate is or would be. That is not to say the segregation of the duties were incorrect, it just displays how each individual feels about the priorities laid before him or her. Some of the delegated tasks may not pose successful if the lower-level employees were to follow through with them, but again it would be founded on the functionality of the unit. So in closing, an effective supervisor is a person who is confident in his or her abilities to assign duties respectively without prejudice to accomplish the goal of sector.

Online Shopping

...Grocery Shopping Walking through a grocery store you can find all different sorts of people. There’s the people that only need a few things and use a basket accordingly, there’s the people that have a smaller list and are not expecting to buy a lot but somehow when they get to the check out their cart is overflowing, or there’s always the person with three carts generously filled. It is the people that fill the baskets, carts and occasionally their own arms that keep a grocery store in business. Because of this, most employees are extremely polite and helpful when it comes to the customers; but that does not stop the customers from being rude not only to each other but to employees as well. The customers who need only a few things are often the rudest shoppers. Normally this is due to the fact that they are in a hurry. It seems as though they think the whole grocery store revolves around them and their few items. They weave in and out of other shoppers and cut off an employee that is trying to help another customer. When these shoppers need help finding something they are often demanding, impatient, and just plain rude. They tap their foot while an employee tries to find what they are looking, and if the employee comes back with bad news such as: they no longer carry that item, they are currently out of that item, or even they never had that item, that’s when the adult who should be mature and understanding throws a tantrum fit. They yell at the employee and demand to...

Prehistoric man, as early as 9,000 BC, was the first to incorporate the stencil printing technique into their surroundings, by placing his hand against the cave wall and blowing pulverized pigment around it. ...This assignment was designed put us, the student in a situation where we are placed in the supervisor position. In this assignment put the supervisor in a position of having to pick and choose what tasks to do themselves and what tasks should be delegated out after coming in and finding their basket full of tasks that need to be dealt with. When you obtain the position of supervisor, there is usually far too much for just you to do, therefore it is important to learn what to delegate and who to delegate it to. The most important tasks should be done by the supervisor but as far as things such as someone’s vacation hours and stocking merchandise for the store, those tasks should be delegated out to the assistant manager and to the store clerks. Being a supervisor means being in a role of leadership, logic, common sense, and decision making for yourself, the employees, and for the company. The “in Basket” debate and discussion gives us and our fellow classmates the opportunity to see if we can successfully delegate out certain tasks as a supervisor at a fictitious company. The discussion between me and fellow classmates was a great one and it appeared as though everyone agreed on everything accept for different incidents. The only two incidents where I came across disagreement were in regards to task number 3, and task number 4. These are the examples in which I will be using in this paper as far as disagreeing is concerned. Task number 3 is in regards to the mall hours......

Basket

In the Basket

...Exercise 7-2,” In the Basket” By: Shannon Quinn Supervision and Leadership, Course Number 210 Due Date: July 8, 2012 Professor Craig Slone One task that my classmates and I agreed on was that the mall needed notification of the store hours changing due to the holiday. I believe that we all agreed to act on because it is important that the customers know when there is going to be a change. This should be done when pricing is different, the hours of the store change or any other information for that matter. People especially customers; do not like to be kept in the dark. As a customer if I see a sign about a shop that I like to go to, I will stop and read it. I think this is partly because I’m nosy, and the other part is because I want to know what is going on in the store that I spend my money in. Most of the time people are okay with changes as long as they know a head of time what is going on. Now if the store didn’t post the holiday hours and I came to the store hoping to do last minute shopping, and a customer came to it and found it closed, I’m sure they would be pretty unset. Within the discussion thread that I and two of my other classmates participated in, I learned that we disagreed on the two applications for jobs. I do believe that my attitude played a part in my decision. There were some other ones that we disagreed on, but I chose this one to do my paper on. It is very hard for me to delegate authority. Sometimes I think it is just easier for me to......

Basket Ball

...ball that is shot into a basket positioned horizontally. The objective to shoot the ball is scores which are gained by following certain rules of the game. The game is played by 2 teams constituting 5 players each who play on a marked rectangular floor with baskets on both ends. The game of basketball was invented by James Naismith in 1891. James Naismith was a physical education teacher at McGill University and later at Springfield College (then Y.M.CA.) at Springfield, Massachusetts. Under the guidance of physical education specialist, Luther Halsey Gulick, he invented basketball as an indoor sport. Basketball was originally played with soccer ball and Naismith used a peach basket (with non-hollow bottom) nailed at a height of 10 feet above ground on an elevated track. Considering the manual removal of ball from the basket a drawback, the bottom was removed to take the shape of modern day baskets. Dribbling was not a part of the game originally and evolved eventually until 1950 with balls gaining better shape from manufacturing. Also the orange ball evolved from the brown ball that was used at the beginning to be more visible. By the year 1906, the peach baskets were replaced by metal hoops with backboard. A referee tosses the ball between at the center of the court between the two players; one from each team and the player who gets hands on the ball passes it to a teammate. To score a goal, a team has to shoot the ball through the basket. A shot scored......

Woven Basket

...The conclusion endorsed in this argument is that the woven baskets, which are previously thought to be unique in Palean, are found to be not conform to its reputation as "Palean baskets". To substantiate(bolster) this assertion, the arguer points out evidence that archaeologists has discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos which is an ancient village across a river from Palea. Furthermore, he indicates that the ancient Paleans have no ability to cross this river. At first glance, the author's argument seems to be cogent, but close scrutiny reveals that it is unconvincing in many aspects. In the first place, the author unfairly assumes that no Palea's residents have ever been to Lithos for there is a river across them. While the arguer doesn't provide us sufficient materials such as geographical data or certain historical recordings to prove Palean was seperated from Lithos. Maybe they can just walk or tramp over hill and dale to Lithos. Even if the only way from Palean to Lithos is across the Brim river, the author's inference rests on the poor assumption that during thousands of years this river is always deep and broad. It is highly possible that this river is shallow and narrow or just not exit in prehistoric era. What is more, the author gratuitously mention that the ancient Paleans could have crossed the river only by boat and no Palean baskets have been found. Why should they have to come to Lithos by boat? A small raft or a simple drawbridge could be more......

...In a Basket MGT/210 Version 3 Supervision and Leadership Regarding the discussion for the assignment in a basket between all of my class mates and I everyone pretty much had the same ideas in solving the issues. Most of us agreed upon which ones would be delegated and which would be acted upon. I noticed that many of us chose to delegate jobs like the rest room is out of order and the 130 pairs of shoes to be stocked away. These are jobs in my opinion I feel that an employee are hired for and is something that can be delegated to the other employees to do. There are mantinence and stocking and important for the emloyees to accomplish. Also there were some of us that agreed that certain jobs were important to be acted upon such as the notice from the fire department for the upcoming inspection. This is important to make sure everything is correct and up to date. If not the companies can get fines and it would not be safe for the employees in case of an emergency. A notice from head quarters about the upcoming holiday sale is also another that many of us agreed should be acted upon. This is because there is a lot to get ready and to make sure everyone is aware and knows what is going on. All fellow students had there own reasons for certain jobs being delegated or acted upon. When discussing with my classmates about some of the......
