A Historic Inauguration

I remember it like it was yesterday, feeling honored, excited and staring in awe among millions of people who were just as excited as me. I could not begin to comprehend how much this event would affect my life because I had a first-hand account of experiencing history. January 20, 2009, will forever be among the most remarkable events in my life. Witnessing the inauguration of our nation's’ first African American president holds a momentous place in my heart and mind. Two a.m. Sunday morning before Barack Obamas’ inauguration ceremony, many of my family and friends loaded a crowded charter bus for the historic journey to our Nations’ Capital to witness this life changing event. As we traveled 10 hours by bus to Washington D.C, you could hear women laugh like hyenas and gallant voices of men telling tales of when they encountered instances of racism and injustice. As I sat inaudible in my bucket seat wrapped in a patchwork chevron quilt, I immersed myself in the cultural conversations around me while acquiring knowledge of the struggles my elders endured during the Civil Rights Movement. One common facet in every conversation was the fact that they never thought they would live to see a black president. Oh, how it made me proud to see how our nation has evolved and that my elders lived to experience it too! Further down the road as we neared our destination, I started to notice droves off charter buses from other states swarm the roads.

Once we reached the hotel Sunday afternoon, I departed the bus to check-in. It seemed to take hours because there were so many other organizations trying to check-in as well. This was the first time I grew tired and impatient and wanted to move time along. Once I

Oral Communications

...Oral Communications http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjnygQ02aW4 President Barack Obama 2009 Inauguration and Address I chose to examine the speech by current US President Barack Obama. This speech was during his inauguration at the beginning of 2009. I chose to use this speech because it examines the speech by a man who attracts the attention of my generation. It’s easy for us to relate at this time in our lives and it shows in his popularity with the younger generation. For the most part of the speech, it was engaging to the audience. It was engaging because he kept the audience’s attention from the minute he was inaugurated at the beginning and passionately delivered a speech with many positive connotations. These positive sentences and phrases received applauses and praises and set the mood for the entire speech. In terms of visual aids, President Obama was wearing a suit, which fit the situation at hand. It was held outside, to make the event more interactive and appealing. It was sunny day, which also played a significant role in the situation. Also, President Obama was using his hands in an effective manner, by creating gestures to enhance what he was saying. This helps the audience understand what the message is and ultimately it boosts the performance. Ultimately, the speech was delivered without flaws and in accordance with the situation; new president is selected and a whole new beginning started for the USA. A positive speech delivered with a positive...

State of the Union

...Toney Lee February 8, 2014 ECO-512-26 Spring 2014 Summary: Obama’s 2014 State Of The Union Address The president of the United States addressed our nation on many different issues, achievements, and opportunities for our future moving forward. During his five years in office, he has experienced the highs and lows of economic growth. Under his reign as president, the graduation rate is at its highest level in more than three decades. Although that seems shocking and difficult to believe, it’s a 110% accurate and true. Our unemployment rate is at its lowest in more than five years. It’s currently at 6.6% which is 1.2% lower when Obama first took office. The housing market is recovering from its five years of pain. According to a survey conducted by housing research firm Metrostudy, there are less than 30,000 vacant new homes on the market. The number of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. last year grew 1.2%, or 136,000, the first increase since 1997. In nearly twenty years, more oil is produced at home than we buy from the rest of the world. America is closer to energy independence than we’ve been in decades. Also, we are becoming a global leader in solar too. Over the past eight years, the United States has reduced its total carbon pollution more than any other nation on Earth. The US budget deficit is set to fall to US$514 billion this year, down substantially from last year and lowest level by far since President Barack Obama took office five years ago. For the first...

Obama Small Business

...The day Barack Obama took over the oval office, the entire nation was thrilled to see someone with much better judgment, charisma and let alone intelligence to operate the nation during the country’s worst economy recession since the Great Depression. When the Obama Administration stepped into the office, many believed that the priority for this administration is to turn the country around from this horrific recession that the entire world was facing at the time. Today, I would like to discuss Obama Administration’s policies that are affecting the ability for entrepreneurs to start, operate and make successful a business. First of all, entrepreneur is an integral element of the United States’ economy. Most entrepreneurs are small businesses, and small businesses are extremely important to the country. Small businesses create a tremendous amount of job opportunities which has given plethora of people a chance to achieve financial stability. Small businesses are also essential elements for the country’s revenue, out of all the companies listed in Fortune 500, a great portion of those companies started by entrepreneurs who had abysmal amounts of asset but great visions. In regards to Obama Administration’s policies on small businesses, it seems that President Obama also believes that small businesses are exceptionally vital to the nation’s well being as he stated in a statement that “one of the biggest drivers of employment that we have”. In order to help the entrepreneurs as well...

Secret Videos Prompted Bowe Bergdahl Taliban Prisoner Swap

...Two secret videos showing rapid deterioration in Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl's health persuaded reluctant military and intelligence leaders to back the prisoner swap that has stoked a backlash, officials said Tuesday, as the Army launched a new probe into why the soldier disappeared from base shortly before his capture by the Taliban in 2009. The decision that brought about Sgt. Bergdahl's freedom on Saturday continues to draw criticism. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.), head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said Tuesday that Congress should have been consulted before Sgt. Bergdahl was exchanged for five Taliban detainees, who were sent to Qatar. President Barack Obama, speaking in Warsaw on Tuesday, said questions about Sgt. Bergdahl's disappearance—which some soldiers said they believe amounted to desertion—will be answered. "Regardless of the circumstances, whatever those circumstances may turn out to be, we still get an American soldier back if he's held in captivity," Mr. Obama said. "Period. Full stop. We don't condition that." Administration officials sought to tamp down anger among lawmakers by offering a private briefing on Tuesday. But Ms. Feinstein said she heard no evidence that Sgt. Bergdahl was in immediate medical danger that made it necessary to act without consulting Congress. "There certainly was time to pick up the phone and call and say 'I know you all had concerns about this, we consulted in the past, we want you to know we have reviewed these negotiations...

Solyndra

...Abraham Villarreal Ilse Rodriguez Business & Society MANA 4352.02 January 29, 2014 Topic: Solyndra Solyndra Scandal Solyndra designed, manufactured, and sold solar rooftop photovoltaic panels to commercial businesses, with the promise of “setting the new standard” for solar panels. Solyndra, formed in 2005, was an up and coming company who was on the verge of changing the way commercial businesses consumed energy. The system didn’t require any tools, and thus, would be four times faster to set up than any other panel. The issue with Solyndra from the start was that they didn’t have a steady fund. After financiers made several estimates, they came to the realization that Solyndra would be moneyless in a couple of years. In 2006, Solyndra applied for a government guaranteed loan, and just a couple of weeks before the company almost went bankrupt in 2009, Obama disregarded all red flags of this company’s viability and gave them $535 million in federal loan guarantees. Records, countless e-mails and advice given to President Obama by government staffers didn’t matter, because there had been signs of corruption all along the way. In July 2009, Solyndra founder, George Kaiser, gave a grant to a foundation close to Michelle Obama, who held a leadership post. The fact that the “Urban Health Initiative” foundation received $10,000 the same year Solyndra received their loan, adds to the pattern of possible connections between the Obama administration and the solyndra...

Barak Obama's Inauguration Speech

...What typical oratorical devices does Barack Obama use in his inauguration speech and how would they influence the audience? Barack Obama’s speech utilises a lot of anaphoric references which is a generic feature of this particular genre. The repeated usage of the possessive determiner ‘Our’ in quotes such as ‘…to the ideals of our forbearers’ and ‘true to our founding fathers’ creates a feeling of reassurance towards the American audience in that the newly elected president will work beside them, not ahead or behind them; it is a reassurance of unity which is a large part of what the United States of America stand for. The use of a semantic field of oceanic lexis demonstrates both a positive and negative pathetic fallacy towards these metaphors. Firstly, the pathetic fallacy appears more positive in the quotes ‘tides of prosperity’ and ‘still waters of peace’. The use of the post modifiers ‘prosperity’ and ‘peace’ denote awareness to the American history and presidents who have taken said presidential oath in good faith and in bad, which works favourably within this genre as this recognition is sometimes the reassurance an audience requires. The negative pathetic fallacy appears under ‘gathering clouds’ and ‘raging storms’, this time using pre modifiers ‘gathering’ – in conjunction with clouds – and ‘raging’ to illuminate the unsettled time, again stating his awareness of the American presidential history. These indications of pathetic fallacy also induce pragmatics, as the...

Leadership

...Although there are many individuals I would consider as the embodiment of good leadership, I would attempt to focus my attention on President Barack Obama (PBO) as the embodiment of good leadership. Mills D. Q (2005), explains leadership as a process by which one person influences the behavior, thoughts and attitudes of others (p.11). This means that leadership sets direction for the rest to follow and also energizes people towards a goal. I would limit this paper to his past leadership roles, the criteria used in determining his leadership capabilities and provide illustrations of how he demonstrated these leadership capabilities in his roles. Past Leadership Roles of PBO Prominent among the many leadership roles held by PBO include but not limited to him being the 44th and current President of the United States, and the first African American to hold the office. During his first two years in office, he signed into law economic stimulus legislation in response to the Great Recession in the form of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010. (Barack Obama. [Internet]. 2015). Other major domestic initiatives in his first term included the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, often referred to as "Obamacare. In foreign policy, Obama ended U.S. military involvement in the Iraq War, increased U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan, signed the New START arms control treaty with Russia...

Immigration Reform

...Immigration Reform: An Immigrant is a person who migrates to another country and is usually for permanent residency. But what is “reform”? According to dictionary.com “reform” means to change to a better state and improve by alteration. These two words make the Immigration reform. Though for senates, federal governments, and Obama it is known as a political discussion. This discussion is debated how the immigration system is not functioning correctly. How the border fence is not secured and the regulation for immigrants is not compatible. These common issues have been accumulating; creating an unbalance system for the immigrants. The Immigration System in America is broken. On March 5th, 2010, Joshua Hoyt, an executive director of the Illinois Coalition of Immigrants and Refugee Rights; wrote to the public stating how Obama is risking alienating latinos with the lack of immigration reform. In this literature introduces immigration reform and how the lack of support is declining(Hoyt, Joshua). In 2008 campaign, candidate Obama promised to make immigration reform a prime concern during the first year in office. This promise gave hope to the people and ambition. Giving Obama 67 percent of the Latinos vote. Which was much higher than John Kerry, 59 percent in 2004. But taking office Obama has pursued a policy of increasing deportation. The Obama Administration plan deport about 400,000 immigrants, which was far more...

Current Events in Business Research

...Current Events in Business Research Debra Blackwelder RES/351 March 10, 2014 John Gilpin Current Events in Business Research The business research process begins with the collecting of data and then processed into information that can be used to define more details on where, when, how, what type of business is needed for that type of buyer. You have to clarify the research question by discovering the management dilemma, defining the management question, defining the research question(s) and finally refining the research question(s), which is called the exploration of research. Then the research proposal is done, followed by the research design strategy, then data collection and preparation. Next are the data analysis and interpretation, then research reporting finishing with the management decision. The article that the Arthur used for this paper talks about how President Obama issued a list of executive orders, one of which is for the Center for Disease Control (CDC) received $10 million to research gun control violence. In the wake of all the different school shootings, the Obama Administration and anti-guns proponents thought the evidence would be irrefutable to support why guns make Americans less safe. They were not expecting what the CDC report found in their Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence. Their report study findings are that armed citizens are likely to be injured by an attacker, defensive uses of guns are common and that...

The Obama Inaugural Speech

...generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our plannet. These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land — a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights. Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America — they will be met. On this day,...

Assess and Evaluate the Success of Barack Obama's Present See

...Assess and evaluate the success of Barack Obama's presidency (45 marks) Barack Obama was elected to the White House in 2008 after being the Senator of Illinois since 2005. Although he still has two years remaining in his presidency, after winning a second term in 2012, there have already been significant events and actions that will dictate the success or failure of his presidency in years to come. His successes in reforming healthcare and gay rights are counteracted by his failures with Syria and relations with the EU. The relationship he has attained with the other branch of government has been a relatively successful one, introducing to new women to the Supreme Court, however losing two midterms and being office during the 2013 government shutdown and a severe reduction in the levels of bipartisanship in Congress have scared his presidency somewhat. Obama has made the presidency somewhat of a more trustworthy institute after removing the negative stigma left by George W Bush. However his introduction of policy tzars and using constitutional bypasses he said he wouldn't, such as executive orders and recess appointments, have caused backlash. Overall though, we can say that his presidency has been a successful one with some mistakes, but we can't really expect no mistakes to happen over 8 years as the a President. Obama has has both resounding success in his domestic policy as well as significant failures. One of his most notable successes, and one of the policies he...
