What are the best practices for services and programming available for prisoners?
Introduction
There are about 2.3 million people currently in the nation’s prisons and jails. (that would be 1 in 10 Americans). The US leads the world in mass incarceration. The US has more people in jail than China and Russia combined. (Stern, 2014). The majority of people would relate punishment with prison. And they are not far from the truth as prisons are facilities that give retribution to people for their bad choices, and deter them from committing new crimes. However, the majority of prisons also offer social services to prisoners so when they leave, they have the needed instruments to reintegrate into society. Most prisons offer numerous programs …show more content…
This is an educational program. The participants in this program are offenders that have problems succeeding in a classroom where the traditional way of teaching is used. According to Layton, Ardern, & Lee, (2010) a divert learner is a person who is average to exceptionally bright intellectually. A divergent learner doesn’t identify with traditional teaching strategies in schools and is likely to have learning disabilities unless the school engages him/her with diverging learning strategies (p.1). The main issue with this student is not actually that they cannot learn but it is that they learn differently. By recognizing the characteristics of a divergent learner and knowing how to engage with them social workers can better understand how the program will help these student learn. The participants in this program were studied for an average of 57 days. ”During their time at YDC the students have increased their levels in reading by .43 grade levels and their math levels in reading by 1.02 grade levels.” (Layton, Ardern, & Lee, 2010, p …show more content…

After serving time in prison serving a sentence, the offender will leave the facility and will face the struggle of finding a job. Education plays a crucial role to prepare offenders for their release. Education provides them with tools to successfully secure a job. According to David, Bozick, Steele, Saunders, & Miles (2013, p 89), individuals who participated in vocational training programs had odds of obtaining post release employment that were 28 % higher than individuals who had not participated. By receiving education offenders are getting the opportunity to get back on their feet and staying on their feet. This means that by having a job they will be able to have a source of legal income and won’t have to go back to crime. If they don’t fall back in crime, they won’t be back in prison. The question develops of just how does incarcerating criminals affect the rates of recidivism? As of mid 2008 there was approximately a population of 2,310,984 held in federal or state prisons or jails in the United States. Of these 1,540,805 were serving out sentences under federal or state jurisdiction. There was an increase of 509 from 506 sentenced prisoners per 100,000 United States residents from yearend 2007. This was an overall increase of 0.8% from the previous yearend. This was however less than the average increase of 2.4% annually for the years 2000 to 2007. (1) These numbers show the growth of the United States inmate population which leads to problems with overcrowding. Within the next year the Federal Bureau of Prisons will open three federal correctional institutions which can hold an approximate 10,500 federal inmates at maximum capacity. The problem she discusses so passionately in her book is a relevant problem in our society today. Ever since Ronald Reagan’s presidency and forward, campaigns have been targeting crime and especially rug related crimes. While it is clear that many of these young African Americans are going to prison due to drug related crimes, stopping the war on drugs altogether is not the solution. Although stopping the drug war may seem efficient for stopping the incarceration of young blacks in the present, it does not guarantee that these same people will not commit other crimes.
