ABSTRACT

This paper presents an argument for the “Increasing Student Population of Hotel and Restaurant Management in Cagayan de Oro City.

This study used descriptive statistical procedure specifically, the mean percentage in order to determine and interpret the data gathered. The researchers used survey questionnaire to gather the necessary data to be used in answering the problems.

This study was conducted in the city of Cagayan de Oro. Cagayan de Oro is bounded by the two municipalities of Misamis Oriental-Tagoloan and Opol. (a) What are the reasons, why did the students study in Cagayan de Oro College? (b)What are the reasons that encouraged them to take up HRM as a course? (c) are the students satisfied in enrolling in this course? (d) as to assessing the school, is it equipped with the facilities? (e) are the instructors qualified in teaching the course? (f) Is the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management in Cagayan de Oro College is effective? (g) Do HRM course have lots of opportunities?

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The responsibilities of entry-level managers in the hospitality industry are continuously changing. Obtaining and keeping a management job in a restaurant or hotel requires that a person have the ability to change. Successful managers have the enthusiasm to respond to the changing needs and challenges of their organization. Some of these challenges are due to the changes affecting the hospitality industry today, Consequently, the curriculum and the methods used to prepare entry-level managers in this field should also be design to fit the demands of today’s industry. Hospitality managers should be able to provide effective leadership to employees. Similarly, employers like to hire potential leaders who are skilled at stimulating people to take rational initiatives. Leadership skills are not the only skills needed by employers. In fact, leadership skills are some of the employability skills most desired by employers. According to Peddle (2000), employers question the success of higher education programs in developing employability skills of graduates. Employability skills are skills that are basic and generic in nature, but very valuable in assisting every person entering the workforce. Some people refer to employability skills as “core skills,” “key skills,” transferable skills,” “general skills,” “non-technical skills,” and/or “soft skills”. Are undergraduate Hotel and Restaurant education programs preparing students to be able to practice the employability skills needed by employers effectively? If not, can these programs be improved or changed to meet the demands of the employers? These are important questions that administrators and hospitality educators must answer in the near future, hopefully before the retirement of the baby boomers when the demand for effective leaders and managers in the hospitality industry will be at high demand.

Fulfilling the chosen field of specialization and evaluating the choice to determine if it is appropriate to the interest of what students prefer to be in the future. Hotel and Restaurant Management course has a great impact to the prospects and possible student considering the future of destination in which establishments has a variety of choice wherein student can choose where they are fit conferring to their skills.

According to the website of COC-PEN, in the spirit of service, Phinma Education Network aims to break down the financial barriers to accessing the highest standards in education to enable more Filipino families to send their children through college. It also envisions its students to reach beyond themselves and expand their horizons; thus, equipping them to face life’s challenges ahead.

COC-PHINMA (formerly Cagayan de Oro College) is a private, non-sectarian institution of basic and higher learning founded by a group of civic-minded professionals in 1947. It was re-established in 2005 by Phinma Education Network (PEN), a member of the Phinma Group of Companies, upon its acquisition of the school. To ensure that COC-PHINMA’s mission is fulfilled, the college of engineering, nursing, criminology, arts and sciences, management and accountancy and education as well as the institute of technology offer academic programs which respond to the ever-changing demands of the global community. In connection of this, the Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management (BSHRM) program is geared towards equipping students with the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to provide quality service in the hospitality industry.

The program contains subjects that will address the needs of different sectors in the hospitality industry, such as culinary, front office, tourism, resort and hotel operations. The increasing number of student in Bachelor of Science in Hotel and

Restaurant management specifically in Cagayan de Oro College,give a big ring to the school. This study entails us to find out the reason behind why most of the student after they graduate in High School commence this course and why they choose Cagayan de Oro College as an educator. This is also to know and measure the capabilities of school and the students taking up this course and compare the population from the past years and the present years and how did it effect the school and to the students.

We choose this topic to feed up our curiosity and to know the reasons behind the rising population of students taking up Bachelor of Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management in Cagayan de Oro College, considering the fact that the competition in this course is really tough and complicated. Believes that giving a real edge to its HRM graduate’s employability lies not only in the proper training of students, but more importantly, in connecting them outright to establishments and actual companies where they can immediately practice what they have learned. This gives them their first chance at getting employed after. Choosing a course is quite hard especially when you are ambiguous and you are not definite which ensembles your best, to have a better choice choose a course that ensembles your individual interest. Nowadays, many schools are offering different kind of courses, but the in factor today is the field of business. Because at the present time it is evident that business is one of leading source of income of the people. Many specializations of business course but the most growing population is in the hospitality industry.

This course provides a synthesis of different skills, concepts and principles specializing in hospitality training. It involves the study and application of practical and managerial knowledge and functions such as hotel and restaurant operations, culinary arts, food service, hospitality education and research that are essential in preparing the students to become adept future restaurateurs and hoteliers. The Rising Student Population of Bachelor OF Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management in Cagayan de Oro College.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study is based on the following concepts which facilitate this research on the increase of student population in hotel and restaurant management in Cagayan de Oro City.

Moreover, the researchers are looking into the factors that will affect the population growth of HRM students in Cagayan de Oro City, as to tuition rate, teaching strategy, scholarship programs, trainings and exposure and school facilities.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers seek to identify the reason behind the rising student population of Hotel and Restaurant Management in Cagayan de Oro College and the study aims to find out the reason behind the following sub-questions out of the major problem.

1. What are the reasons, why did the students study in Cagayan de Oro College?

2. What are the reasons that encouraged them to take up HRM as a course?

Assumptions

(1) Specific question: How eligible are the instructors of Cagayan de Oro College handling Hotel and Restaurant Management?

Implicit (unwritten) assumption: There are definite qualifications that one should possess before he can teach Hotel and Restaurant Management.

(2) Specific question: How adequate are the facilities that Cagayan de Oro College should acquire before it can offer Hotel and Restaurant Management?

Implicit (unwritten) assumption: There are definite required facilities that a school should acquire before it can offer Hotel and Restaurant Management as a course.

(3) Specific question: How effective are the trainings of Cagayan de Oro College in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management?

Implicit (unwritten) assumption: There are definite trainings of Cagayan de Oro College that are effective in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Hypothesis

1) Question: Is there any substantial difference between the insights of the instructors and those of the students concerning the different aspects in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management?

Operational hypothesis: There is a substantial difference between the insights of the instructors and those of the students concerning the different aspects in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Null hypothesis: There is no substantial difference between the insights of the instructors and those of the students concerning the different aspects in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

2) Question: Is there any substantial difference between the effectiveness of the inductive training and that of the deductive training in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management?

Operational hypothesis: There is substantial difference between the insights of the instructors and those of the students concerning the different aspects in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Null hypothesis: There is no substantial difference between the insights of the instructors and those of the students concerning the different aspects in the teaching of Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Scope and Limitation of the study

The study focuses on the rising student population of the Hotel and Restaurant Management in Cagayan de Oro College. Some factor looked into the reasons of the student on enrolling on the said course and how the increasing population affects the Hotel and Restaurant Management department and the school college itself. In addition, the study includes to what extent the school can impart to the students when it comes to its facilities. Moreover, the teaching strategy in giving quality education can be considered as the possible reason on increasing number of students enrolled in the school.

The area of the study is within the Cagayan de Oro College premises and the respondents are purely HRM students, both associate and BSHRM student, either male or female and without age preferences. With 250-400 respondents needed. The study has duration; it is just within the first semester, from the months of July to October only. The researchers have its resources like the survey form, which will serve as the hard evidence to the research process.

Significance of the study

Hospitality Industry is increasing industry around the world. It has been said that number of students taking Hotel and restaurant management is increasing.. Even if the capability of the applicant doesn’t really fit in the said position still the establishment hired them. With this situation the researchers chose to study this in order to know what will be the effects of hiring non-HRM graduates to the food and beverage department of different hotels here in Cagayan de Oro. Hotels hired the non-HRM graduates for the reason that some of the HRM graduates are not qualified for the said position but it doesn’t happen all the time. Hiring non-HRM graduates in hotels can be done after the establishments hired the HRM graduates who passed the interview and who have the capability to do the said job. The study will benefit the hotels, the HRM students and the researchers. Hotels will benefit from this study because it will give them a glimpse on what would be the effect if the management of the said business will continue to hire non HRM graduates. It will also give them the idea on what to do to their employees who are not a HRM graduates, through this, the establishment can make a possible solution to lessen the negative effects of having an employee who are not fit on the said position. HRM students and the researchers will benefit from this study because it will give them realization that they need to be serious with their studies because the competition in hiring employee in the hospitality businesses doesn’t only evolved for those who graduate in hospitality industry courses but also for other courses. As early as now they can have views about their chosen fields. Through this study, HRM students and the researchers will be motivated to study and acquire all the knowledge they can get while they are still studying.

Definition of terms

Population – the total of individuals occupying an area or making up a whole

Facility - something that makes an action, operation, or course of conduct easier (Merriam – Webster).

Employability – a set of achievements, - skills, understandings and personal attributes – that make graduates more likely to gain employment and be successful in their chosen occupations, which benefits themselves, the workforce, the community and the economy (HEA, 2012, PDF).
